A year is pretty recent, he should know better. Can't hide behind the "it's part of the culture" excuse like you could for things said/done 6+ years ago.

Damn you almost had a point but nah. A lot of these videos don't depend on the context because dropping hateful slurs in a non academic fashion is never ok if youre not the marginalized group that the slur is directed towards.

And ruining their life? Dunkey is still making tons off of YouTube videos. And did the dude even apologize? Plus it was only a year ago Jesus

I wasn't talking about this guy specifically, I've never heard of this guy before.

I meant in general, this trend of bringing up past social media posts/videos just for an outcry is getting a bit tedious. People say stupid shit all the time.

Obviously saying "Faggot" is never a good thing and shouldn't be said but the less people care about those words the less weight will be given to them.

Destiny made a name for himself early on as a theatrical asshole. Complete with casual bigotry. He has said considerably worse things than Dunkey. Never understood how he gets lumped into 'progressive' youtubers.
Well yeah, that has been quite a while ago though and since then the countless debates he had with "Sceptics" and other assholes are some of the best "progressive" content on tha platform. He doesn't even see himself as a progressive but he is some kind of bastion of reason in that cesspool called political youtube. His stances on a lot of things just happen to align with progressives and that's a thousand times better to me than what ever the hell those white ethnostates supporters and race realists try to pull.

Because I figure if people are more aware that no one is "clean", they'd stop trying to tear every single person down that is friends with or brushes shoulders with or is fans of someone they don't like except in very specific circumstances. I've been flat out called a Nazi (I'm Jewish and the grandchild of Dachau survivors) for consuming some people's content or products despite not endorsing and/or not making a big deal out of some less than savory things they've said or done. I used to think they were all bad actors, but there's A LOT of them and it gets tiring explaining.
That's well intentioned then but I highly doubt it will ever happen lol.
Welp then.

Sorry, didn't see you edited this in. Of the people mentioned in that post:

Justin Roiland (Main creator of Rick and Morty): Friends with noted pedophile artist Shadman and defended H3H3's transphobia on Twitter
Rogerbase (Youtuber): Friends with bigot Youtuber TheBitBlock
Geoff Keighley (Video game journalist, Game Awards host and Dorito Pope): Friends with and keeps inviting Boogie to E3 coverage as well as giving trending gamer awards to less than savory people
Neil Druckmann: (Naughty Dog guy largely responsible for The Last of Us and a lot of the Uncharted series): Friends with and fan of Era-banned content creator Colin Moriarty.

I can elaborate on everyone in my first post in this thread if people ask, but it would take a while.
My bad, I actually know who Keighly and Druckmann are and I probably saw some of Rogersbase videos as well. (Doesn't he have an account here as well? Or did he meet the fate of Destiny lol). Geoff supporting Boogie hurts and being friends with TheBitBlock is the fucking worst so yeah... agreed on those for sure.

Who is the child who seems to have maturity beyond their years?

Kinda don't get how some of these big names don't seem to find an issue with saying words which are largely regarded as being inappropriate. You wouldn't, or shouldn't, go around saying words like this out in the real world so I'm not sure why people think it's OK to say them online.

I overhead an incredibly well educated mechanical engineer call something "totally retarded" the other day.

It's easy to lose perspective if you spend a lot of time on ERA or other "woke" websites, but the reality is that most people don't use "bad words" maliciously, they use them because no part of their brain is wired to tell them that what they're doing is bad.

I think that yes, if somebody behaved in bad ways a while ago and realized he shouldn't be doing it anymore then that's something worth considering. Of course it's not "only" that but condemning someone for some shit he said as a young idiot when he tries to do better isn't what I do.
This topic is pretty redundant considering this is like the third or fourth thread on the issue and has been discussed to death. Gets brought up anytime his name drops as well.
Not sure what the forum has to do with that. Again, no matter what people or I think of him, he's one of the only people that heavily pushes back against racists and bigots on youtube and twitch, sometimes making them show their asses in 5 on 1 debates for hours on end. I don't really care about his motives and his past, the result is what matters in this instance.

A lot of people make mistakes during their lives, what really bothers me are the people who are quick to judge and destroy others they don't know personally over schoolyard nonsense. Forgive and move on or stop viewing his content.

This, give people a chance, don't be soo judgemental over past mistakes, look at them now and how they are.

I don't think that video had anything to do with the twitter altercation that Neil Cicieriga got involved in. It was just Dunkey making fun of Leafyishere.
The Neil Cicieriga thing was a separate incident and happened specifically because Neil referenced when Jontron did that.

See that mindset is what I mean. I totally disagree with those choices, but I'm not in a position to tell someone to stop being friends with someone no matter who they are.

Era is kind of a bubble and sees a lot of issues like this as a purely black and white and as a means to reflect back onto the subject of the discussion and designate them as awful people. When in reality the natural conclusion is condemning literally everyone with any degree of visibility including people actually calling for change like Contrapoints because six degrees of separation assures there WILL be shitty people in everyone's life and may have a positive relationshpi with the subject of the conversation. And I think that's why a lot of people kind of shit on strict progressive spaces like Era, because purity tests based on guilt by association or somewhat mild things that don't outweigh the good they've done are a real thing.

And of course while it's impossible to escape in gaming, this extends will beyond that. Not just the Nazi comment, but people have called me awful for not cutting out my clinically depressed sister from my life for voting Trump. The only response I have to that is you don't know me or my circumstances, so stop acting like you do. I think if everyone applied that mindset to e-celebs that they aren't friends with and will never be friends with, people would be less angry all the time.

America's own X-word is like a guessing game, if you post video where he said that word, why not write it? This PC culture is getting really ridiculous, I would post Luis CK video, if he was not a creep.

Besides the word originates here:
PrYAV.jpg

So.....

Disclaimer I am non-English speaker so, I actually never use that word, but sheer outrage of someone using it, why is that? I watch South Park and that Luis CK routine and seems like a swear word rather than word to aim to certain group of people. But I am from Europooor, so what I have to say to this, right?

Another thing which fascinates me is that you cannot use word "retarded", but word "idiot" is fine, which is far more serious form of mental retardation. But that is somewhat fine.

Isnt that exactly what the south park episode was about?

Cartman and all the other kids didnt intend the word "faggot" to be used as a deragatory term towards gay people, they were using it as an insult towards bikers who were being obnoxious.

Saying people should care less about racist or homophobic slurs in order to give the words less weight is just shifting the blame. If only they'd ignore these words, which have a deep history of being intentionally hurtful, then they wouldn't be so offended all the time? No, place the burden solely where it belongs, on the people who say these things to begin with.

About forgiveness, that's an individual thing. Nobody is owed forgiveness, but if someone messes up, and puts in the proper effort to redeem themselves, you usually find many people are willing to give second chances. Where you generally run into a problem is when someone displays a continuing pattern of behavior, whether directly related to the previous mess up or something adjacent to it. Or they just show no contrition. If you're cool with someone and forgive them, that's on you. Other people might feel differently about it.

It's a slur towards gay folks. In English, at least American, idiot isn't offensive because it's a term for anyone being stupid, although it's a bit more aggressive to call someone an idiot and not dumb or something. Calling someone retarded is a whole other thing entirely here.

Almost like these words have a history of being weaponized against marginalized groups or something. No one is looking to insult someone by calling them a bundle of sticks. But sure as fuck relates to how heretics (including homosexuals) were burned alive by being thrown atop a bundle of sticks.

And no, comparing "idiot" to "retard" is not similar.

No idea where faggot comes from and why it's used as a derogatory term for gay, but I agree on the "why not type it out". You can say Dunkey said faggot on stream and call him out and condemn it. Typing the word does not mean you condone the use of the word. I always found that weird how Americans are like "someone used the N word, the F word" etc. Anyways, doesn't really matter much at the end of the day, it's just an english oddity from someone who's main language is not english.

Another thing which fascinates me is that you cannot use word "retarded", but word "idiot" is fine, which is far more serious form of mental retardation. But that is somewhat fine.
First I'll adress mental retardation, that's not what people should use anymore. Intellectual disability is a good alternative. Language evolves and changes, as you bring up idiot and how it was used in legal and psychiatric capacity, but isn't anymore. That's not the origins of the word either, but it ment ignorant, uneducated, layman. Retard(ed) in other hand has been used to mock people with intellectual disabilities, which is different thing than ignorance. And it causes hurt even when not directed towards someone with intellectual disabilities. It also stereotypes people with intellectual disabilities. Because the word has been used so widely to mock people it has gained a lot of negative connotations. I don't know if there's such words in your own language, I'm not English speaker either but there's a word in my language which is considered racist nowadays when before it could be found in school books. And at one point was even encouraged to be used rather than nasty racial slurs. But then it became a slur towards black people since people used it in negative capacity and to mock someone.

Now with the homophobic slur, there's some similarities. That the word is used to mock people, even when they aren't gay. This implies there's something wrong with being gay, there's a negative connotation to it then. Similarly when people call something gay, not someone, but in example "this movie is gay" then being gay is implied to be something bad. And obviously nobody is calling anyone a bundle of sticks to insult them. Even if the word has many meanings, when used in a context of calling another person that it's pretty clear it's about sexual orientation.

There's probably someone else here to explain this better, I'm not a native English speaker myself so it can be bit hard to put this all into coherent explanation. But hope that helps atleast a bit. And even if I wasn't clear, then just consider that these words hurt people and there are alternatives to use so why keep using them. Even if you don't exactly know why they are hurtful, you wouldn't want to hurt people I'm sure. There's still people in my home country using that word I mentioned, some do it out of spite and because they are racist. Some may use it depending on the situation, understanding that it's a hurtful thing to say but might use it still when it doesn't reach anyone who it may hurt. Because that's what is normal to them, that's what they've learned the word to be, non-offensive descriptor. So this is specifically for older people. With younger people it's been considered a slur for all of their life, so them using it is quite immediately racist.

If that was his only intention, why would he release it immediately after Jontron had a much-publicized meltdown about political discourse?

I thought the meltdown was in 2015? Dunkey's Jontron video is from March 2016 at the height of Leafy's popularity. Unless there was a separate meltdown between him calling someone a tard on Twitter and his white nationalist Destiny meltdown that I'm not aware of.

I know you're already banned but if you're really this ignorant then I want to tell you about my association with it.

I've been called a faggot while being kicked by other boys on the ground, defenseless, for getting an erection in a school shower. I've been called a faggot while I had a beer bottle thrown at me for holding hands with another guy at a concert. I've been called a faggot for marching with LGBTQ activists who just want the right to exist in a world without hate and violence directed towards them. I'm not saying these things for anyone's pity, just trying to point out what I've had thrown at me, literally, with that word being shouted in my face.

I am definitely not alone in having these experiences with the word. There are thousands of people out there who've suffered much worse. Words have history and meaning and they have specific meaning attached to them when coupled with certain actions.

The word has been weaponized against anyone with an "alternative" lifestyle to what a heteronormative society run by straight white men dictates. The word often comes with violence attached to it, it is a violent and demeaning word. It's also violent and demeaning to be told to "get over it" by people who seem to want to go out of their way to normalize hate speech and violence.

It's unacceptable, but not unforgivable the way the n-word is. Millennials grew up when the f-word was still socially acceptable. I can therefore forgive a one-off slip-up if the person is apologetic and doesn't make it a trend. No millennial was ever alive at a time when the n-word was acceptable, so the people dropping those in a "heated gaming moment" do not deserve the benefit of the doubt or any second chances.

I think his point was that not everyone who understands English is American and it pisses some not-Americans off when they are held to American standards, as if their mileu doesnt matter.

English is the lingua franca because of American military, financial, and intelligence enforced despotism (USA truly is the global minotaur); but not every English speaker is American, wants to be like Americans, or sees the world through an American prism.

To some, idiot and retard are the same and enforcing American linguistic standards on a 'europoor' is just more imperialistic despotism perpetrated by Americans. The 'europoor' version of English is wrong and must be corrected.

I know it's important to hold higher standards of language, but is it necessary to dogpile on everyone every time?
Acting hostile to people won't really make them agree with you. It'll just be another "I'm sorry I offended you" response from them and they'll probably just get bitter about it.

Too me this witch hunting level of twitter. Dunkyes videos and persona definitely dont reflect what he said OVER a year ago.

E: Not defending him, because he shouldn't ever say something like that, but there was plenty of conversation about it back then.

Gotta remember that a lot of things were left forgotten from the old place during the move that happened about a year ago.

This incident, hype for Assasin's Creed origins, the Naughty Dog sexual harassment allegations (along with Sony's "Sunday Morning Non-Statement"). All got swept under the rug.

Never understood this battle against words that seems so important in America. One could not like some words, but opening discussion attacking every one that used it, seems like Don Chisciotte's battle
