Hasn't changed. Also people have found creative ways of corrupting Boot0/1 so make sure you backup, and keep it safe. It is the most important part of your backup and can't be rebuilt.

I've seen several people bricking since 6.0.0 and I'm honestly unsure wtf they are doing.
This is just a spare Switch I bought with 3.0 firmware solely for homebrew. Is there a recommended website with a relatively easy to follow guide? I was waiting for deja vu to hit.

Just discovered PSNES emulator. Think I'm going to mess about with this for a while.

Edit:
This is great. Works flawlessly and can even do 2 player single JoyCon play.

Getting more and more into emulation. Final burn alpha on Switch is just too good. The flexibility of playing random arcade games in handheld mode in bed. Then putting it in table mode on a coffee table and playing some multiplayer beat em ups is great.

I've been using this one as well. Went ahead and put the entire SNES catalog on my SD card. Almost too many games to sort through...

Is there a place to learn about all the different emulators in development and their current state for Switch? Maybe we need a Switch homebrew official thread to gather the info and keep it semi-updated.

With Open GL finally working on Switch we will start getting more development on emulation for 3D games. As well as seeing more homebrew games and ports of 3D games.

Anyone know what's the current state of Linux on Switch? Is it really usable? Does WiFi/Bluetooth work? Can you run Netflix (inside a browser)?

Also curious about anything on the Android front.

The official NES Emulator has now been hacked and you can inject new roms and artwork into it.

Well whatever term you want to use, it's available for people that know how and totally works fine (even on lower firmware) without the Online Subscription.

Sure, so does the NES Mini which is exactly the same emulator barring some minor changes.

The point is its not hacking, its just a file swapping like moving files in a folder. Words mean nothing if not used correctly.

Well not everyone uses correct terms, so "hacking" or "hacked" is used by many people as an easy way to get across what they mean. We all knew what he meant, so I have no issue with people saying it, even if it's not technically hacking.

Actually they've reverse engineered the database file and created tools to add more games than originally allowed. It's more than file swapping.

No, you could do this day one by swapping the files and names on day one. Theyve just made it more cleanly functional.

This isn't hacking, it's REing. Hacking impliea you defeated some form of protection or encryption. The emulator had none.

As far as I've read my only hope at hacking the switch on 6.0 is to use sx os, but sx os doesn't support retroarch. Right? So how would one go about emulation at that point?

You must be fun at parties.

RetroArch works perfectly fine with SX OS. You can use the internal SX OS homebrew launcher, or the hblauncher to launch RetroArch, works both way for me. The only thing you have to be aware of, is that you use a FAT32 formatted microSD card, instead for exFAT. exFAT may cause some trouble at some point.

I must've misread or misunderstood. I was under the impression that I would have to buy another switch or wait for other methods to reach 6.0. Guess I'll pull the trigger, then! Thanks!

Edit: wait, I remember now. I believe I read that if you hadn't hacked your switch before the 6.0 update that you would have issues, or that sx os has issues with 2.0, or that retroarch has issues on both 6.0 or 2.0. something along those lines gave me pause. I think I'll try it anyway, though.

If you have a launch Switch, it's hackable no matter what firmware, as the exploit is a hardware problem and there isn't much Nintendo can do about it, that's why they have done a slightly refresh with the newer ones appearing in shops now.

There are sometimes compatibility issues with Homebrew on newer firmware versions, as apps need to be updated but if you are on 6.0 you can still use SX OS and homebrew with no major problems. Any minor issues will be fixed with newer Homebrew updates.

That makes sense, luckily I have a launch switch. I just wish Nintendo were better at pushing their own emulation. I would take a ban at this point just to play my old games.

Sometimes I think the community promotes piracy if it's against Nintendo.

Sometimes I think Nintendo fans have persecution complexes because their hardware has notoriously bad security.

Everyones hardware gets hacked. But only in Nintendo related threads does this idea that everyone modifying their console wants to pirate games pop up.

Seems that sxos have announced HDD loading now as a feature ( previously seen in tinfoil )

It's actually very different from Tinfoil.

Tinfoil can install XCI from network, SX OS is gonna be able to load XCI in real time from a hard drive plugged into the Switch USB.

I've got a Switch on 1.0 and I'm thinking of installing ReiNX on it. I hate the idea of having to connect it to a computer to inject the CFW every time I turn the system off and back on, so I'm thinking of buying an injector dongle. That would be a little more convenient. Does anyone have any experience with them? Are they worth it? Do they really work?

You only need to re-inject if you cold boot it. It will stay when it goes to sleep, charging, etc.

I really wouldn't want to keep it in sleep mode for long. Whenever I put it down, it may be weeks or months before I go back to it. Even if I put it on sleep mode, the battery may die before I get back to it.

I have the SX Pro and it's been fantastic. Installing the modified boot means all I need is the USB connector and not the joycon part. It has largely worked fine and been problem free.

Do you have an Android phone? You can inject the payload by connecting a phone to the Switch instead of a computer.

I've got an Andriod tablet, but no phone.
Should work the same, just less convenient. The cool thing about using a phone is that you always have it on you/nearby and it's always on, and you can easily keep the cable needed to connect it in the your Switch carrying case, so you should have all the parts you need for a quick homebrew bootup at any time. Not so much when using a computer.

Then again a specialized dongle is the easiest solution, but a phone/tablet is a good enough alternative if you already have them and don't want to pay for a dongle.

How does the system firmware work with ReiNX? As far as I can find out, it doesn't use EmuNAND. Do you have to update the systems real firmware for ReiNX to be a higher firmware or does ReiNX run an instance of a higher firmware when it runs? My Switch is on 1.0. I'd prefer not to update, if there's any way to avoid it.

If you use the AutoRCM method you can install ReiNX and update the firmware without burning efuses, so you'll keep the ability to downgrade to any firmware version down to the one you previously had (1.0 in your case).

If you install ReiNX the normal way, you can't downgrade anymore.
