At 13 months old, I was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type II, a neuromuscular disorder which gradually weakens muscles. Since the age of two, I have used an electric wheelchair, along with a bevy of assistive technology that allows me to thrive in a generally ableist society. Over the years, I've watched as my disease stripped me of my independence. I can no longer feed myself, sign my name or – and this is arguably the most horrendous of all – play specific genres of video games. However, Pokémon was always an accessible, and therefore constant, presence in my life.
However, as the latest update from Nintendo and The Pokemon Company confirms, motion controls will still automatically kick in if the system is moved while in handheld mode.
While playing flat on a table might be an acceptable workaround for certain disabled gamers, the complete inability to turn off motion controls in handheld mode can still be problematic for others. For example, when I utilize my Switch, I continuously shift the system within my hands. This allows me to comfortably and effectively play games. If I accidentally tilt the tablet, that would register the Switch's gyro camera function that occurs in handheld mode, which would prevent me from playing the game.
