Article on IGN by Grant Stoner about the issue with mandatory motion controls in the Let's Go Pokémon titles.

http://ca.ign.com/articles/2018/10/05/pokemon-lets-go-will-be-the-first-in-the-franchise-i-cant-play

At 13 months old, I was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type II, a neuromuscular disorder which gradually weakens muscles. Since the age of two, I have used an electric wheelchair, along with a bevy of assistive technology that allows me to thrive in a generally ableist society. Over the years, I've watched as my disease stripped me of my independence. I can no longer feed myself, sign my name or – and this is arguably the most horrendous of all – play specific genres of video games. However, Pokémon was always an accessible, and therefore constant, presence in my life.

However, as the latest update from Nintendo and The Pokemon Company confirms, motion controls will still automatically kick in if the system is moved while in handheld mode.

While playing flat on a table might be an acceptable workaround for certain disabled gamers, the complete inability to turn off motion controls in handheld mode can still be problematic for others. For example, when I utilize my Switch, I continuously shift the system within my hands. This allows me to comfortably and effectively play games. If I accidentally tilt the tablet, that would register the Switch's gyro camera function that occurs in handheld mode, which would prevent me from playing the game.

More in the article. This is something Nintendo should absolutely address.

Talked about this a bit in another thread.

For most of us, this probably won't be an issue. If it's anything like aiming in BotW, but without any reason to not take your time, it'll be easy.

The real issue here is why can't this company, with one of the biggest money-making brands in the world, not be bothered to include some accessibility options? Differently-abled gamers should be disappointed. We all should be. There really are no excuses for options that are 1. Easy for them to impliment and 2. Could make the game actually playable for a bunch of their fans. Only reason I can see is them wanting their gameplay experience to be a very particular thing, and not wanting players to miss out on that. I don't like that reason because it's inclusive nonsense and Pokemon inherently has a lot to do with choice.

Do better, game freak

As it's been made abundantly clear between Let's Go and the newer entries in the franchise, Gamefreak is indignantly opposed to giving the player any form of choice whatsoever when it comes to how players engage with their games.

Add it to the heap of shitty decisions that is Pokemon Let's Go.

That's horrible. I hope this gets brought to GF and Nintendo's attention and they actually do something about it. Nintendo can be so backwards when it comes to giving options, either not realizing or not caring that for some it isn't just a matter of preference. This is coming from a big fan of their games and of motion controls even.

Let's hope they can deliver a solution with a day one patch.
What really sucks is that this really shouldn't be in a day one patch. It should have been included in the game from the beginning. But hopefully enough voices are heard that TPC and Game Freak go back and add another option for disabled players.

How can they in their sane minds not think about an option that toggles this function off? Is it too difficult to even implement nowadays?

Basically my issue with the franchise.

Actually, I think this problem is even worse here, because they did give you the option to disable motion controls for the (fucking awful) ultra wormhole minigame in UltraSun/Moon. Granted, the game doesn't go out of its way to make this obvious or easily accessible, but it was still there. This is just a complete step backwards.

That's awful, hopefully they can do a patch to completely turn off motion controls for disabled players.

This game seems so obviously like a backwards step in so many ways, even for a (supposedly) simplified and more accessible remake of the original game.

And yet it'll sell an incredible amount.

This was my first thought when they announced the motion control 'features' too. I've suffered from RSI in the past that flares up from time to time so I'm always wary of games that require motion controls. Really bummed that there's no option to switch them off for people who can't use them at all.

There are Switch controllers out there that function as Pro Controllers but don't have gyro. I'm pretty sure LGPE supports the Pro so I wonder what would happen if you were to use one of those? Would the game recognise that there's no motion and refuse to run? I imagine GF could do that but they'd have to go out of their way to, surely.

It's really annoying that some games are causing problems like this - I'm affected by TWEWY because I can't hold a controller in each hand - and that most of the cases could be mitigated if not downright avoided by having more flexibility with control options.
