LMAO at how they play up the drama. The middle-of-the-road Senators have no real conviction, they'll vote whatever the majority allows them to vote to give themselves a temporary boost.

"with slouched posture and a drooped, conquered head, Merkowski listens intently to the votes being called out, tears of resentment at the political vice for which she finds herself pinched running down her indecisive cheeks. But just as she had given up hope of escape, the gentle flutter of two aye's fill her ears. she recognizes their sources instantly, and with a new sense of determination and purpose rises to her battle worn feet to let out a William Wallace sized "NAY". And after a moment of startled silence the room erupts into applause as her fellow senators carry her out atop a parade of cheers and celebration"

You guys are forgetting the absent senator in your calculations.

Why do people care so much about this fucking non-story? They'll just hold the vote open for him when they need to. The whole thing is bizarre. Once (if) they have the votes, a 12 hour delay for someone to get on an airplane isn't changing anything.

The GOP has shown their hand for the last two years. I can't fault anyone for being cynical regarding this nomination.

There is an old saying, if it walks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck then it's probably a duck. People putting faith in Flake or Collins or Manchin when those people have already shown who they are is foolish.

I think energy would better be spent campaigning to ensure the right people get in office after midterms and doing everything possible to get these clowns out of office.

I realize this thought may not be popular here but is anyone else thinking about the ramifications of Kavanaugh not making it onto the Supreme Court, and how it will further vindicate the right to show up to the polls come November?

Maybe I don't have enough faith in the Blue Wave, but we're looking far more vulnerable than the Republicans in the upper house.

I just don't see the endgame if they vote yes in cloture and no in final procedure. They're not escaping backlash, they'd receive flack after the final no more than voting no in cloture.

Monster's getting through.

Voting no in cloture means they can keep having infinite votes for the confirmation. If you vote yes for cloture they get to have a final vote and end the whole procedure if they vote no there.

The ramifications of him being on the Supreme Court are worse.

Don't pin your hopes on Republicans to squash this, which is what alot of people are doing now when instead they should have been voting for years instead of just talking about it online.

Not saying you two haven't voted, but seriously, it's far too late in the game to be optimistic over conversations on the floor. If they buck the trend, by all fucking means I will celebrate, but I'm not going to sit here and make a mountain over tweet about an unheard conversation.
Look I'm optimistic about the vote.

But guess what? Even if Kavanaugh gets confirmed, I'll still be optimistic because what's the use in being pessimistic? What do I or anyone gain by being defeatist? Exactly nothing. If he gets confirmed its time to protest, rally, but most importantly, vote.

Yeah, nothing wrong with crossing our fingers but I think we all know how this confirmation plays out in the end.

Wait this isn't parody? Lol

Also, just so I'm clear, only one GOPer needs to vote no assuming all Dems do as well in order to sink it, right? Because one Senator is going to be absent?

being optimistic and having faith are two separate things. saying "we are fucked he's 100% getting in" is different from mere pessimism and is absolute defeatist. you're not smarter than others or more realistic or any other excuse you have for giving up and deserve the ridicule

for instance I can stay optimistic about this and move forward and change my "call your senator/representative" game plan depending on if he gets in or not. not shit posting about the sky falling

Cynicism isn't wisdom you cowards.

Yep

the GOP isnt stupid enough to lose a guaranteed Yes vote over timing. They'll work around it to make that vote available to them

They can delay that vote long enough for the senator to get there. We can not in any way count on their absence. We essentially need two additional no votes. The only hope is, if Murkowski keeps to no, that two of Collins / Flake / Manchin flip

It really does make you wonder what things would have been like if Twitter, Facebook, etc., etc. we're around for the OJ trial.

I have zero faith in Collins. I just hope she loses her seat in 2020 if she votes yes. These politicians don't give a damn as long as they see no repercussions for their actions.

I'm not so sure. Naturally the Republicans will pick a conservative who's far more right leaning than even Kavanaugh (yes, it's possible to be) and we'd be in an even worse position.

Kavanaugh was blaming his problems on a conspiracy theory pointing at the Clintons. Who on earth could be more right wing from the picks they currently have?

Obviously possible, but that's a very high ask. Of all the potential nominees Kavanaugh is the only one to openly say that Trump shouldn't be impeached even if he's guilty. A hypothetical "worse Kavanaugh" is just that, especially with midterms a month away.

I'd rather have a mere conservative than someone who thinks the potus is above the law
Uhh, yeah you're right.

I'd just amend that to say "...thinks a Republican President is above the law."

I still think my original point stands though, we're going to lose more seats in the Senate - and this isn't helping the Democratic cause.

Got it. NBC also clarified that this is basically the vote for approval of procedure observed and not approval of substance of candidate.

Hoping for the best, expecting the worst. Having Murkowski state her intentions is undeniably a good thing--and doing it at the cloture stage is pretty hardcore. If Collins or Flake go no, then Manchin will too.

And what happened to that Colorado dude who supposedly became undecided?

Iirc his office immediately came out and said he supported Kav. Not sure where that reporting came from.
