Assassin's Creed Odyssey is one damn greedy game. In addition to its half dozen special editions, its Amazon Alexa tie-in, its Totino's promotion, and its season pass, it's filled to the brim with microtransactions. As well as all that, it's been purposefully turned into a grindfest in order to sell XP boosters, like this is some free-to-play mobile game.

I can't disagree with this. Whatever you think about the series being an RPG now these aggressive microtransactions being so prevalent in singleplayer games of all thing is highly unethical at best.

I think that Dunkey guy summed it up pretty well in one of his videos. It's like 6 hours of great gameplay spread over 60 hours.

Grindy indeed. Going back to the original is actually quite nice. Each assassination target is like one level in a series of about 12 levels and you're done.

Like I said in the other thread when Jim Sterling, Arthur Gies and Ben Kuchera all are yellling about something you know ubisoft is doing the right thing. Three of the most out of touch people in gaming.

Clickbait was and clickbait remains.
Levelling feels natural, encourages to play sidequests and increase exploration. Like any RPG should try to achieve.

Anility progression is completely fine, I'm 15 hours in and half of my skill tree is done.
I unlocked the skills I wanted immediately after 30 minutes.

It's an RPG, it's massive, wtf do you expect?

More people to call this out the better. I don't believe pay options like this should be acceptable.

I don't see how stuffing paid games full of microtransactions can ever be the "right thing".

Anyone defending ubisoft here are the sole reason why we're in this mess in the first place

Like clockwork, Jim.

I've talked about this elsewhere but yeah it's a questionable practice but to pretend it ruins Odyssey is incredibly disingenuous.

His shtick is beyond old. ACO offers tremendous value for the money and plays well without buying anything extra.

Holy chit @ thinking that putting mtx in a $60 game is them "doing the right thing".

Do you have Ubi stock? That's the only acceptable excuse for this hot take.

I'm with you here. 50 hours in, levelling about once per hour, maybe more. If you're doing side missions etc, you level at a good rate, with decent challenge.

MTX options suck, but they're by no means necessary. I was playing before the Store was live and it felt like I was playing the version of the game that I should have been - ergo: shortcuts are just that.

New and exciting territory for Jim here.

I do look forward to the discussion it brings but we now have two threads covering the same thing. lol

I can't believe all the reviews glaze over this shit, and give Ubi a huge score without really mentioning this crap, thats how you know the sites that don't want to anger their AD revenue and free trip providers. Time Savers were a things in Origins too.

I've been mentioning how the loot is gimped to curb you towards the microtransactions but people have been apologizing for Ubi when I mention it.

I rarely agree with this troll aggregator but this time he's right.

This. It's a huge game that doesn't require the microtransactions to actually finish it. It's dumb that they are there but in no way are they mandatory. I'm in no rush to finish this game, it's not going anywhere.

....and there it is. Hope your Ubisoft stock is getting you a nice return
lol posts like this are hilarious. Considering the three I listed love to post bullshit constantly than it tells me the game isn't as grindy or as bad as they are saying and makes me want to give it a try. I'm still playing origins and have no interest in odyssey and probably won't get it for a long time.

you have been shitting up every ac odyssey thread in existence on this forum, your first agenda was wahhhh i want it to go back to before origins. like ok you dont like the newer games but seriously.

and im happily enjoying the game and the only time i touched the store was when a main story quest gave me helix credits for free so yea.

oh wait jim doesnt mention that part does he

People just love to bitch about things. Jim just finds the most popular thread on Era each weeks, cribs the most common opinions, and regurgitates them in a video. Just like Gaf, if Era didnt exist, neither would Jim.

I was made out to be insane. lol

I don't always see eye to eye with Jim, but I wholly agree with him on this one. No one is obligated to buy the game or spend money on its microtransactions, but Ubisoft can go fuck itself if this is the status quo for its games going forward.

Wow Jim Sterling wants to comment on this latest controversy sweeping the nation! What a surprise. I'm sure when I get a chance to watch he's going to take a new angle that I haven't heard or read before and have evidence and examples backing up this claims right?

The posts downplaying this show how clever publishers are by playing the long game with microtransactions instead of going full hog and fucking up like EA did. Will be interesting to see where we're at in 5 years.

Thanks Jim,

I have been on the fence for a while and I dont know why. In my mind the game always had more negatives than positives but this seals the deal for me. I simply dont have time for this crap. Its not a money or monitorization of it all its just the fact that all that cash grab stuff leads to me having to play more- way more - than I need to. I dont have time in my life for that anymore. I am smart enough on my own right to see past the begging for cash ubi is doing so I always go with the base games they offer. Usually its trivial stuff that is included but this is a downright handicap implemented in the base game.

Regardless if it's true or not ( having not played the game ) there shouldn't have been a need for those "boosters" in the first place.
Like i haven't seen a game with "tme savers boosters" on release where there wasn't an obvious grind involved.

Wow damn. Between this and Polygon (I replied on that thread), I feel like maybe I'm the one going crazy here?? The game does not feel like a mobile free to play grindfest to me, at all.

Yes i hate that this game even has paid microtransactions but I've not felt the need to use them once. Maybe I'm just getting old and used to the grind and therefore don't perceive it as much? No idea. But playing the game, exploring, doing quests has kept me at it very near where i need to be when I do main quests. I head it gets worse later in the game so I'll have to see on that point
