If we could get a real turn based 5e game set in the Baldurs Gate universe, I would be set for the year. I have spent all this year going through most of the CRPGs released in the past 5 years and cannot get enough yet.

I don't know how to feel about this, to be honest. As others have mentioned, BG2 + ToB is pretty conclusive and I don't really see a real point in adding anything further to the story at this point. Larian is a great developer and I really enjoyed DOS1 (haven't gotten around to 2 yet) so I'd rather they focus on their own setting. The BG saga needs nothing -- that interquel didn't even register on my radar because in my mind the BG saga is complete with 1, 2 and ToB.

So most likely they'll be either adding a new story to the "Baldur's Gate Universe" AKA the Forgotten Realms. Why not just go for the generic DnD thing then? Or they'll be continuing the Bhaalspawn saga, which seems kind of hard to do, what, 15+ years after the fact? I dunno, seems a bit like a trap to me.

Watch Brian Fargo know that it's actually inXile or something and a collective groan escapes from all. Not that I didn't like WL2, but yeah....

Hence 'real time with pause', not 'real time'. It's my preference in RPG's, which is why I was so glad to see Obsidian bring it back with Pillars.

PoE has much better combat, especially PoE2, because devs don't stick to pen and paper rpg rules. In BG we even had dice throws to determine success. I wasn't really a fan of that system.

What I like about turn based combat is that it facilitates a type of co-op where you can all take as much time as you want to plan, so the game can actually try to be way harder.

I assume you'll have to reroll characters for this and won't be able to just import your God-tier BGII party?

Adding to my previous reply, Larian doing turn-based D&D (like Temple of Elemental Evil) would be a mouth-watering scenario, on the other hand...
And it surely would be an improvement over the messy ruleset they used in Divinity Original Sin 2.

The Baldur's Gate Saga doesn't need a sequel/prequel or whatever. The game is done, the story is told. No need to milk this. Make a new Dungeons & Dragons game, great! But let Baldur's Gate Saga rest as the best CRPG ever made.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 was pretty good, but maybe working with some other ruleset would help them a bit. Writing was good in DOS2, as was graphics, and quest design.

But combat was so weird.

You had so mo many abilitites to chose from it became tiring.
Every single humanoid you attacked had a whole bag of magic abilities.
As did every little character.
And every combat encounter ended up with the whole scene set on fire.

I don't remember that much from playing Baldurs Gate 1&2 at their releases, but I do think there was a bit more.....structure to it?

Or maybe I'm completely wrong, and this just how hardcore CRPG's should be. I'm no expert on them, far from.

I'm not sure if Larian would do themselves any favor by picking up Baldur's Gate. People are going to be so much critical of everything.
I guess I'm cautiously optimistic

Hiring Colin McComb makes (even more) sense with this rumour

I mean, after DOS 2 I trust them to make a great game. But I don't see how direct sequel is possible given Throne of Bhaal was conclusive enough.

Ugh. Hope it turns out to be false.

I'd prefer to see new IP from them. (Preferably in a slightly more grounded setting rather than MAGIC FUCKING EVERYWHERE, but that's just me.)

DOS and DOS2 are about the only new CRPGs (is that what we're calling them now?) that actually innovated a bit rather than just trying to remake BG2 or Fallout. Making a thoroughly unnecessary sequel to BG2 seems like a step backwards.

But how can you continue the ToB events? Your party was like half-gods in the end, you can't make it further from there.

Or maybe it's sonething like reboot based on new DnD edition. Anyway sounds interesting.

I'd rather it be turn based and multiplayer like Divinity OS2 than real time with pause (absolutely hate that battle system), so if Larian is doing this, and they are incorporating multiplayer in, I am absolutely in.

Maybe they shake the paradigm of previous BG and all other Infinity Engine games and turn BG3 into a "turn-based-strategic-positional" RPG exactly as DOS and DOS2 have been.

I would be happy with it. I think it would serve as an opportunity for improving the stablished bases of what they have been doing AND renew the well known Baldurs Gate playstyle.

Okay here we go -
BG3: Boo's Wild Ride
BG3: Aerie and the Heiress
BG3: Invasion of the Miniature Giant Space Hamsters
BG3: Baldur Gates Harder
...

well I guess they couldn't do any worse

Like... That's just the world of divinity, its filled with magic.

Having lots of choice in how you encounter combat scenarios is not "weird", they leave it up to the player to select the right tools for the job. You don't have to use fire, it's one of the many options at your disposal.

This is hugely exciting for me, wonderful news. D&D's Forgotten Realms sure is continuing its rise within the game market after a long absence.

Yeah, I can somewhat understand that with your own toolset, but that even lowly creatures had so much magic and abilities made everything exhausting and weird, IMHO.

But as said, I'm still a rookie in the genre.

Would certainly be interested. Their games recently have been perfect, I just hope they don't expand too quickly.

Seriously, I'm getting incredibly tired of people somehow not understanding how to play RTwP games and wanting the precious few RTwP franchises to become turn based.
They already have a ton of great turn-based games to choose from, screaming to convert an established RTwP franchise is just greedy and selfish.

I seriously doubt that Larian would just create a new Divinity game and stamp the words Baldur's Gate 3 on it - so I don't understand where all this talk of 'turn-based combat' is coming from?

Nor would Larian maintain the tone of the Divinity games - BG3 would clearly be a much darker game.

Kind of surprising to see so many people in this thread having such little confidence in Larian.

This would be extremely hype! <3 Though I would ideally want to see Baldur's Gate keep the classic real-time with pause combat format, after the disappointment of Torment. Fingers crossed this rumor bears out!
