you're aware it wasn't received very well, though?
not sure how far the post-launch updates went in terms of fixing some of the fundamental design issues the game had... (it does look nice, though)
I keep seeing people saying this and I dont get it, the game is pretty good. Doesn't reinvent the wheel or anything but it looks beautiful and fun.

I'm torn between purchasing Runbow or Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime for some multiplayer fun. Both have amazing discounts on them right now

Chasm is releasing on October 11. Just got an email for it.

Edit: nevermind, I see people already discussing it.

I was interested till I realized it's randomly generated levels. Like what?? That removes the best part of a metroidvania, exploring handcrafted environments.
the reviews say the levels are not interesting and most fights take place in long corridors.

The same thing is holding me for Dead Cell

According to the official website, Black Bird is coming out "very very soon" but I'm not sure how old the page is. Could it be coming out like, this month maybe?!

The semi open pathing of Dead Cells serves a different end to metroidvanias. The game is combat oriented and incentivizes fast, strategic play. The game isn't trying to be a traditional metroidvania so the procedural generation is not a detriment to the game.

I think today might be the biggest dump of shovelware the eShop has gotten. I expect things will get worse from here.

It will. I was expecting some kind of eShop revision by now- offering a better user experience to sort, search, & find gaming experiences. Devs can't be too thrilled. Imo, the Steam store is so informative & actually fun to shop in. I've found some great recommendations & my Wishlist there (leading to zero to minimal regretful buys) is a focused collection of games.

I took a peek @ my own Switch library & I'm realizing that I can't get caught up with even B tier indie games. Unless there's a super discount, it's beginning to be a waste of space & $$.

Currently I'm having fun with Donkey Kong, Skyrim, 2K19, & soon to be Mario Party, Skylink, Diablo III, & that early 2019 Mario title.

Chasm is actually handcrafted rooms, but they're randomly stitched together per save file. You start the game and the world is set. You can actually share the seed for your world so others can have the same experience.

I don't know, what I played of it I really enjoyed and I put it off specifically to play on Switch. I don't agree with those critical reviews at all.

The levels arent random, they are just strung together semi-randomly. The long corridors thing could be applied equally to SOTN, and honestly isn't that much of an issue with Chasm because the enemies either have interesting behavior which makes them fun to fight even in a long corridor, and there are lots of combat scenarios that take place in levels with platforming challenges as well where you need to use the level geometry to help in combat.

Like I said, I really don't understand the complaints, except that the random generation isn't something players will appreciate unless they play the game more than once.

Look at this.

sinttulo5qi6m.jpg

Look those retro games all over the place. It's a beautiful chaos, but it's chaos.
I mean, always it will be optional. If you love this, you can keep it.

We need to have a serious discussion on how far down Stardew Valley is on your list.

Played a few hours of Valthirian Arc. Really disappointed in this one. The city-building aspects aren't really there, and the actual battling is basically a glorified mobile game with no real depth. I would've loved a My Life as a King where you could go on adventures and battles, but this is not it.

I haven't opened it yet, it was an impulse buy. Sometimes I think about to start it, but I have afraid to get hooked and forget about other new games, or play new games after a few hours of Stardew Valley and drop it. Endless loop.

this goes deep into the problem with the disconnected-interconnected world and so on.

Completely agree with the video. I played and beat Chasm on the PS4. I was very excited for it before release. The art style and graphics look great. Ultimately, the game is mediocre and it is almost completely to blame on the level design. I played Chasm right after Hollow Knight. Almost every room in Hollow Knight feels interesting or unique or meaningful in some way. Compare that to Chasm where there are a handful of kinda interesting rooms and then a bunch of boring long hallways that all look identical. Chasm has some other problems too but the randomly generated level design is by far the most egregious.

oOo: Ascension for Nintendo Switch | 6 Minutes of Gameplay -- basically you have to make your way through stages that are setup like mazes. Can get pretty challenging but stages also have a fast way to completing them. If you boost, you can jump over ledges and avoid certain obstacles.

Aaand sold. This will be my new time waster now that I'm locked out of Rocket League.

Dems a lot of games, bro.

I probably have just as many titles as well lol...although a ton are arcade and Neo Geo titles. Stardew usually hovers in the top of the list though.

It's a fantastic game, and with the way the saving is set up it's easy to stop and take a break....well sometimes. Try it someday, I can't promise you won't get hooked so your concerns are valid for sure lol...but seeing it that low on your list makes me sad! One of the most relaxing games out there imo and it's a perfect fit for handheld mode.

I mean...I feel like expecting every indie metroidvania to be as good as Hollow Knight is just setting yourself up for disappointment. They are very different games.

I don't think everything needs to be as good as Hollow Knight though. There's a big gap between Chasm and Hollow Knight with plenty of games in between. I'd rate Chasm like a 5 or a 6 and Hollow Knight is probably a 10 for me. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Chasm is a terrible game but there are so many games out there that it doesn't make a ton of sense to spend time on the mediocre ones. And it pains me to say that because I really wanted to love Chasm. I've been following it since 2013 and it was one of my most anticipated games.

Yea, I bought Ascension and I regret it, too.

I don't like how there's not really a main menu. No words. No options. You just have to guess.

I wouldn't recommend this game. Besides what I mentioned above, the gameplay just doesn't feel fun. I'm currently at World 3 but I lost all desire to play.

If they had some sort of leaderboards to compare, then maybe I would have an incentive to continue.

That sucks that you bought it too.... It just feels very underbaked, and I'm not sure I read anything about the impressions of its weird menu design or lack of leaderboards. A few sites were giving it solid 7's on Xbox, so at this price I assumed there was some meat here to be found, but the ideas on board, seem very minimal, and like you stated, I just don't feel an urgency to explore further..... There seem to be very few mechanics introduced either.

In comparison, the Art of Balance is a solid pickup, and having bought it once or maybe even twice prior on Nintendo systems, I feel much happier with that $9 purchase!

Oh, and I checked on Steredenn, and I played it 8 times prior to last might, as I played twice and unlocked the Daily Runs. I think my gripes still hold, sadly, as I feel there's no inertia, or rumble to the ships and opposing ships. I don't really feel like there's a space battle going in, and the backdrops could be replaced with ajything else, and it would feel just the same. The enemy wave design feels so minimal and doesn't harken back to classic enemy wave patterns, so everything just feels grating to me in this game. I can definitely see it's combo strength, at hand, like you mentioned though! I'll keep at it! And oh, I definitely like solid rogue likes/lites. Even though it's not a hardcore one, I loved Gungeon, and put over 100 hours into it.

Speaking of Hollow Knight, finally finished it after putting it down for a few weeks and man, in terms of what you get for the price you pay, this game is a 10/10. Like, seriously... It's insane the amount of content this $15 game has. Not only that, the quality of what is actually present puts some big budget games to shame.

That said, if not taking price into consideration, there are A LOT of things I'm really not a fan of. Traversing the world after you've unlocked everything is a huge pain, the souls mechanic of 'dropping your souls when you die' doesn't make this game better; in fact, I feel this game loses nothing if you just strip it out entirely. Some of your fundamental traversal options are acquired entirely too late and there's no reason the waypoint maker is an equipable charm.

All in all, HK is still one of the best games I've ever played and is probably my favorite Metroidvania to date.

Or.....you could discover how laborious the gameplay loop is, how routine the presentation of the game becomes in comparison to classic harvest moon, and how it feels a bit devoid of soul.

Most adore it, I found it incredibly well crafted for a one man developed, but completely devoid of uniqueness or actual fun. Tons of digital labor, less fun.

Got #15 in the Sterendenn Daily Challenge - Bots are OP as hell and the specialist ship is stunning, I almost beat the battleship that would have gotten me in the top 10.

For less than $4 I have already gotten more out of that game then many full priced ones. So glad yall kept posting screens and videos and talking about it or I would never had tried it.

been playing for a bit now and it seems fine. it's a great game to blank out to while listening to music and letting your muscle memory take over. the break mechanic is forgiving as well so that's a nice inclusion. and i've never been one to care for leaderboards in single-player games, so games like ascension and bomb chicken fulfill my needs.

Experiment with the stages. Some stages look challenging but you can boost over gaps or move across a series of platforms before they move.

holy shit it works! i just tried it on some conveyor belts in level 3-5.
Hahaha, yeah boosting can radically alter a stage. Some stages challenge you to complete them in 20 seconds and using the boost to go over gaps I did them in 2 seconds. Finding these secret ways to complete stages or overcome obstacles adds a layer of entertainment.

I picked up minit as well since it looks nice and short and I just got through Mario + Rabbids KB (which is now a top 5 tactical game). Excluding Oxenfree, I've had a great streak with Switch games. Hope it clicks!

Yeah I'm really digging this game. It's not a marble roller but it's scratching a similar itch. It's pretty too.

I'll doubt check in a bit, from memory there are pointers!

Did you check because every gameplay I could find on YouTube uses analog controls only?

Edit: Just saw a Nintendo Impact Gaming's gameplay video and they say that they don't think there is any sort of motion controls :( this is just stupid if true! And it makes this much worse version than Wii U. And the thing is that the footage in the trailer which seems to be pointer controls has a different style of cursor. So is it just Wii U footage? This is very misleading if true!

If you were looking for more challenge and variety I'd say stick with it. The platforming and puzzle elements really start rolling in world 4. One level in particular is just one big puzzle you need to solve in order to progress.

I just opened the eshop and saw a bunch of interesting new stuff I never heard off before. Anyone got anything to say about:

Vertical drop heroes? Looks like a mix of downwell with spelunky?
Jettomero? Don't know what it is, but it looks awesome.
Soulblight? Looks like a unexplored kind of roguelike.

I've heard of oOo, but is it any good?
Top tip: Most Switch games are on Steam and I usually read reviews there before purchasing on the eShop

Vertical Drop Heroes
Jettomero
Soulblight

Have they included an option to turn off the ghost in the levels? In the review of XBLAFans, this was the major complaint with the Xbox One version. Once you complete a level, a ghost will appear doing your last run. And this added to your normal character, resulted in confusing parts with both characters, the transparent ship and the main ship in the screen.

I'm not a great fan of ghosts appearing in the runs, I find them distracting.

And thanks for the amazing footage!

There is no option to remove the ghost -- I don't think there is even an options menu in the game. It can be distracting if you fail a stage towards the goal, but I seldom noticed the ghost on screen. Oddly enough, I noticed it a lot more when rewatching the gameplay footage than actually playing. That said, I can see why it would bother some and hopefully the option to remove the ghost ship is added. I imagine it is present to allow the player to see their path of progression and to aid them in finding ways to improve upon their stage completion time.
I just figured it out. Tap 'L' to toggle the ghost on and off. An indicator will flash and the ghost will vanish or reapper. There really should be a dedicated controls screen.

Regarding the subject of folders, things can be much more simple.

There is a more efficient solution to implement, to the problem of libraries with +150 games in which to find an old game that you haven't played in a lot of time, can be a problem.

Simply, add a button in the menu with all the icons, to short these icons. For example, if you push this button, you have an option to short all the icons by alphabetical order or by the last time used.

And also add a third option for a contextual search bar, in which you can type in a box the letters of a game, if you write MARIO, all the games containing this word will appear in screen.

Giving the simplistic UI of Switch, and the "weight" and importance of the visual icons implemented in this design, this should be the solution to go.

It seems like Nintendo was pessimistic regarding how many digital games will purchase the people.

In an ironic way, the UI of the NES Online Service with only 20 games, include an option to manually change the order of the icons.

But with hundreds of games in our Switch libraries, we can't do the same thing.

Also, tags are a much more contemporary approach than the obsolete concept of folders, if you want to create this type of configurable options by the user. This is the solution implemented by Steam. Add different tags to your games, and you have an option to only show the icons with a selected tag. But you will never have the ugly and impersonal icon of a folder in your screen, a boring concept taken from offices, in your UI.

I'm playing games, I'm not in a boring office classifying documents: folders should die in graphic design. They are obsolete. They're not cool. There are smarter and more efficient solutions.
