"Women, are the n-word of the world." Raped, beaten, enslaved, married off, worked like dumb animals; denied education and inheritance; enduring the pain and danger of childbirth and life IN SILENCE for THOUSANDS of years They are the most disrespected creatures on earth.

As a black man I find this offensive but I understand what she is trying to say. Call to attention of the worldwide problems women face and try to solve them

If you are black and a woman u have it the hardest but I don't think a white woman or man should be the one using the black experience as an example of the suffering women face

I almost find it offensive, but its coming from a good place. Just opens up comparison time... which deflects from the entire point she was making. I always say that the Palestinians are the n-words of that region, every region has its n-word. In that sense, I get what she means. But I've never hung out with Bette.

She could have just listed all of the problems women have, all women, in the world. Like being killed for reading a book. I mean, the parallels are there already. The way she worded it will just bring up a heated debate where both sides are social losers frankly. This could have been worded in a more unifying way, and less co-opting Current events of black people being shot for being at home.

At the end of the day, a White woman benifits in a way no n-word ever will. So thats why its a shit thing to say.

what does that make a black woman

n-word squared.

These kinds of comments are just as tone-deaf as the "gay is the new black" think-pieces ten years ago.

Also, why does everyone have to compare their suffering to black people? It shorthands that civil movement in a really crass, disrespectful way, if you ask me.

BLACK PEOPLE ARE THE N-WORD OF THE WORLD.

Stop co-opting the Black struggle to contextualize your own. WE'RE STILL IN OUR STRUGGLE.

I'm so tired of this quote and the so-called allies who lean on it. Constantly trying to recontextualize "nigger" to represent other movements erases the very real stuggle that Black people still face, and pushes that idea that the word needs to be broadened because, well, haven't you heard? Black people have rights now and shit.

There are plenty of seats, Bette. Have one.

Should we downplay what rich black men say about issues facing poor black people too then?
Lolque? I agree with the analogy in spirit but it shouldn't be coming from people who probably don't understand racism and/or misogynoir themselves. Black oppression is being conveniently used by Lennon and Middler.

And more than half of women in the US are willing sellouts (though I understand the psychology of why).

A nice reminder that Yoko Ono sucks.
Bette Midler should delete that shit and apologize.

Could have just said "plantation slave" or something to that effect. Still not really an apt comparison, but it would have a better shot of getting her point across without raising so many eyebrows.

I took your post differently than you meant it then.

I understand this appropriation more than most given the star power behind its origin, but that doesn't make it acceptable.

Rich black men still face black people issues and can be rightfully bring attention to issues that poor black people face

Black woman face woman AND black people issues and white or any non-black women don't need to pretend black women don't exist so they can pretend to face black people issues

Black people don't give not a 1-2-Step about Lennon and his celebrity didn't stop this from being dumb as hell when he said it. The fact that Bette Midler reused this quote without realizing that shows how performative her status as an ally really is.

I get her point, but it could have been made with out that poor analogy.

And people stop using Black people or any other minority as your measuring stick. If you recognize how bad they have it, why don't you speak up more for them until you want pity for your chosen cause?

Lol other people have said it but if women are the n-words of the world, what does that make actual black people or black women for that matter?

There are much better analogies to use than this which is honestly quite insulting.

It is usually white women who pull this shit and they are talking about white women. "Stop treating us like niggers." is what they actually mean.

LOL I just got reminded of Patricia Arquette lecturing POCs for not standing up for woman's rights.
She lectured PoC and LGBT folks about making sure straight white women get equal pay.
"It's time for all the women in America, and all the men that love women and all the gay people and all the people of color that we've all fought for to fight for us now."
