I have Red Wing Iron Rangers in Copper Rough and Tough:

If you are in the US, Sierra Trading Post sells their factory seconds online! They work out to about $200. Mine had a small knick on the toe but that was it.

SLP Combat Boots are very nice, don't think you can find them new these days though.

they seem fairly decent but it's stupid as hell they press their logo into the leather. kills all chance i'd ever try them out.

Frye doesn't do this, though? I have the Folsom Combat, the Arkansas Logger and the Logan toe-cap, and none has a logo. But yes, completely agree, stupid to do that. Very tacky.

Are Fryes expensive - yes, at the official website they are. But on sale, at a place like Amazon, Fryes are pretty hard to beat. You really notice the difference when you're actually holding a pair.

BTW, about fifteen years ago, the quality dropped off considerably, but the brand has really bounced back. I'm thinking about purchasing the Prison Boot next, in black. I also covet the Officer Cuff boot, except they never seem to go on sale.

What brand do you like?

Frye definitely does it. You can go see the logo stamped usually on the heal of the boots. Sometimes it's higher up the ankle. As for brands I like, when it comes to boots I am pretty much exclusive Alden and Viberg. They are pricey as hell but I find their fit, construction, and styles to be pretty unmatched. I do have a pair from Carmina which aren't too shabby either.

I wish I could afford Vibergs, they're magnificent.

As a Texan, a lot of these just look like higher topped dress shoes, lol. Even my Timberlands look more like boot than what I'm seeing. They don't have to be shit-kickers or anything but man...

I've got a pair of wolverine novaks right now that do the job well enough. Had a good pair of red wings before but they were a total lemon set so I turned my nose up at them this time around. I'll probably buy my next set from them tho lol >.<

I got Red Wing Iron rangers for $175 as factory rejects. There was a small scratch/dent. They're Minnesota made and are just really nice. Love em. Probably going to get a second pair at some point.

I had some really nice, thin and ultra comfy boots once, perfect for my lazy ass too because they were of the zipper variety. Wish I could find something similar one day. I got weird feet

I've been wearing Doc Martens for about 6 months now constantly and I love them. The break-in period was hell though!

This year I'd tried goign for Solovairs. Made from the original moulds, similar sole, made in England rather than the Far East. Oh and grey stitching rather than silly yellow stuff.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solovair
Shoe manufacturer R. Griggs Group Ltd. had the patent to produce Dr. Martens boots but not the technology so in 1960 Griggs and NPS collaborated to create a boot using a Solovair sole and a Griggs upper, the result was the now iconic Dr. Martens boot. The first pair left the NPS factory in 1960. NPS Shoes continued to make footwear under licence until the mid 1990s called 'Dr Martens made by Solovair'. They trademarked the name Solovair in 1995[2] and now make their own air-cushioned boot using the same lasts and leather cutters and machines used to create the first original Dr. Martens suspension soles in the UK.

thanks for the heads up, but my "expensive shoes" money is currently reserved for a pair of these:

Warm Whites and white Retro models go for ~$250 during sale season all the time, if you're not absolutely dead set on getting just the all whites. I believe AMEX cardholders currently have a $50 off $250 FarFetch offer that you can add to your account too.

Anyone in the market for Red Wings (among other brands) should keep an eye on DomesticDomestic.com. They have 30% off sales occasionally. I got my Iron Rangers in Oxblood for $320 - 30% = $224.00.

Their customer service is top-notch as well. I ordered two pair, the other in Copper, just to see which finish I liked better, and sent one back. No hassle at all.

PSA, if you're getting Iron Rangers, start with about a full size smaller than the shoe you wear. I'm a 11.5-12, and the 10.5 fits like a glove. So comfy.

+1 here for Alden. I've got 5 pairs of Aldens now, 3 of which are boots. Absolutely love them.

My suggestion is for a pair of Indys if you want to spend the $ for Aldens. They make so many variants of it between all the different retailers that carry Alden so you are bound to find a pair that are to your liking. They dress up really well too with waxed laces.

I've got a pair of Red Wings that I like as well, but not as much as my Aldens.

Is there anywhere I can go to keep track of sales on common projects? I'm not dead set on the all whites but I am dead set on getting the classic model (non-retro).
