Greece
yeb1kVr.gif

Its not exactly Ancient Greece as it takes olace on some fantasy island in Ancient Greece that is somehow not Atlantis, but its pretty damn good and I love what they do with the bits of Greek Mythology they took creative liberties with. Not to mention one of THE best soundtracks, just mind blowing.

It's crazy to see with such a rich mythology, there have been so few games about it. They use this lore only by taking references. And when it comes to making a real game in ancient Greece, it often lacks ambition (except of course AC Odyssey).

Several years ago, I dreamed of having an open world with Theseus or Perseus as the main character.

Rome total war.

I spent way too many hours in that game. Greece was also one of my favourite factions.

God of War 2

Edit: Now that I am thinking, while I think GOW2 is the better game, GOW3 is definitely the best in regards to exploring everything from Greek Mythology, so there is that.

Very underrated game, it was an action adventure rpg from 2008. Very dialogue heavy with choices to make throughout the game. It suffered from some bugs and some people who weren't happy that it was so dialogue heavy. The voice acting is "ok" for the time period.

The story itself is about Jason trying to find the golden fleece in order to save his wife from death. It doesn't follow the Argonautica, it tells it's own story and changes things around.

I grew up on classic Ray Harryhausen movies, Clash of the Titans, Sinbad, and of course Jason and the Argonauts, so this game was right up my alley.

I wish more games would tackle those classic greek tales, I'd love a good game based on the Odyssey.

Playing through AC: Odyssey right now and it's a great game so far, but story wise I just like my "mythological" characters too much.

Gonna drop a mention of Apotheon here, which really sold ancient Greece well to me.

My pick as well. Decent combat, great art, and fantastic soundtrack.

Edit: oh, are we including strategy games as well? Hrm, in that case, either the first Age of Empires or Rome: Total War (with Europa Barbarorum mod).

With Apotheon well metnioned already, I'll go to a childhood favourite of mine. Disney's Hercules.

It was never too tough, lacked replay value for anyone not a young kid in love with the movie, and about as average as you can get game play wise, but it felt like playing the cartoon and that's all I needed. True it's not anywhere close to being realistic to ancient Greece, but it had a flair that I enjoyed. Though I would argue it still has the best looking version of ancient Thebes.
