why in the world would people want to play big AAA adventures in a even tinier screen???

I can barely see the small text as is, I can't imagine it being smaller.

they have to replace the 3DS at one point...or try to at least.
They could make the actual model the entry level or the kids console and the new model the premium for the core tech gamers.

As long as they don't start with the DSi or New 3DS shenanigans of games only playable on the new model, no issue with this.

Oh boy. Just had a thought. What if Sony did launch ps5 next year. Now it would go directly against a new and improved switch.

That would be a fun battle to watch.
Even a "New and Improved" Switch wouldn't be anywhere near the power level of a PS4 so I'm sure the PS5 would have no issues with it.

Most likely this is what it always is from Nintendo. Smaller, less costly to produce with improved battery life.

People expecting a "Switch Pro" type thing are going to be very disappointed.

True or not, this rumor could definitely hurt the switch sales. As if getting to 20 millions wasn't hard enough in their current situation.

people who care already bought one, for the most part. most people buying it this holiday and beyond are doing so for mario kart, zelda, ect.

prospective switch buyer at this point doesn't factor in stuff like this, metroid prime 4, and other such stuff we get into a tizzy over

Oh my god I'm out. You're acting like a child. Get over it dude. Next you'll be reporting me because I said something naughty about the Switch.

I'm so sorry you cannot handle that people want Nintendo to make a new system on the newest tech out there. DEAL WITH IT.

dude, the best mobile solution nvidia has is the xavier, that is a 12 nm chip, and its not ready to be in a videogame console, you're just making a fool out of yourself

7nm could do a lot of things for Nintendo. With Nvidia's newest chipsets oh man the possibilities are endless. We all now these two are busy working their magic, so I have no idea why people would hate on what they are creating. Suggesting their next system will be out in 2023 is preposterous. The PS5 will be midlife at that point. Nvidia will be on their 5xx series.

I'll put it one better. Mariko is a custom Tegra chip, T214 vs the X1's T210. It costs a lot to design a new chip like this, and they still haven't used it, even if they have firmware for the device since March. Here is the real hint IMO, a more power efficient display. Why? Shrinking the chip to 16nm would increase the battery life in the current Switch to over 5 hours with no other changes, 12nm could even possibly achieve 7 hours given voltage reductions... So why care about a more power efficient Screen then? Well if you put a more powerful CPU and GPU in the Switch, you are going to need that extra power efficiency if you want to get up to the 3DS' 3.5hr battery life.

Mariko's firmware data revealed that it has a 8GB profile, it also has a 4GB profile, but devkits for the Switch do not have extra RAM, they simply only have a higher storage capacity of 64GB, Mariko, the Foxconn leak, these Switch "Pro" rumors... it's been climbing in evidence for 2 years that this more powerful device is there. Heck, even the original Semi-Accurate rumor had the deal with Nvidia to sell 20 Million 20NM chips that TSMC had Nvidia on the hook for, which is why Tegra X1 chips cost Nintendo ~$55 a piece, which is half the price of the Wii U. Switch sold 20 million units, but originally it was suppose to sell about half of that, they expected to sell around 20 Million by the end of next FY, and now this rumor comes out saying Mid 2019. This was always in the works... I just watched a video on Youtube about how this is because the last few months of sales have been slightly lower than Nintendo expected... Nintendo had Mariko in it's firmware back in MARCH when they announced a striking sales forecast of 20 Million units, they were in the works with this Switch before the last 6 months of sales, so no, it had no bearings on what Nintendo is doing.

Also, the Security update narrative has kind of been shredded by the supply chain's new components IMO, this is about updating the Switch. New 3DS launched 3 years into 3DS' life, a Switch "Pro" launching just before the 3rd year isn't a big difference, especially when compared to PS4 Pro, that launched on it's 3rd year anniversary.

They may confuse things with the 3DS successor. I guess we'll have to wait for E3 next year and then we'll see.

You have no idea what Nvidia has going. The best that they have they clearly have not told you of all people about.

Let's just watch and learn. The only foolish person here is you. Get over yourself. A Switch Pro is a great start. In two or three years max they will have something else ready. I'll bet you 500 dollars on it.

I'm expecting it to be a pretty similar form factor so it can fit in the current dock.

I'm curious to see which way they decide to go. Do they give it more power and a bigger screen so everything looks better in handheld mode or do they do something else like improve the battery and current screen quality?

This is crazy, and it's even crazier in Nintendo threads. It's like certain people around here are actually anti-technology or something.

Just to answer your 'anti-technology part', I think there is a misunderstanding.
There is what you can do tech wise in theory and what you can do if you want to sell a system at a price where you have some margin and do not sell the hardware at a price too high for said market.

Expecting 7nm chip from Nvidia for just a switch revision is really setting expectactions too high imo.

Maybe for a the Switch successor ?

The cycle of releasing a system revision around the same year as a new generation of Pokémon continues;

GBA SP + Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire: 2003.
DS Lite + Pokémon Diamond/Pearl: 2006 (Japan).
2DS + Pokémon X/Y: 2013.
Switch ? + Pokémon Gen VIII: 2019.

Games only playable with the new model would be a huge slap in the face to the customer base that made the switch a success so I doubt they'll go that way. On the other hand, they will need the new model to be as powerful as possible if they want to somehow continue receiving third party support for non indie games when next gen releases. I hope Nintendo will make the right compromises. I still believe a release in 2020 would have been better.
Now, those who kept on being dismissive toward people asking if a new version could release soon may shut their mouths and that's a good thing.

7nm is a huge jump for power savings. All the companies will jump on it. What exactly do you think this Switch Pro is going to use?

You think they are going to go backwards?

I expect a Switch 3.0 in Holiday 2022... 3rd party support for PS4/XB1 will continue for ~2 years after the next gen starts, this means that 2023 will see the drop of those platforms most likely, It's the best time to produce a 7nm Switch that can do between PS4 and PS4 Pro, doing PS5 games in 1080p, buy a 4K dock if you want that resolution. Nintendo has options available to them for this platform, there is no reason to abandon hybrid devices when you could easily just release a dock to cover console power.

I mean I understand people not wanting to get left in the dust, but some people are around here are absurd. 7nm is a HUGE boon for power savings. You would be stupid not to use it.

Shit I just bought a Switch. Hopefully the upgrade isn't major. If its just a better screen then I don't mind since I only play in docked mode anyway.

Αny hope for an improved dock that will improve the docked performance?

That right there would be all I need. Much improved dock performance.

2023 is WAY too late for that. 2021 at the latest will be another revision. I don't see how you guys come to these conclusions. Tech in 2021 already is going to be insane. Nintendo is not just gonna sit around waiting for people to kick their ass.

They might be frugal, but they are not stupid.

They need to change the dock alongside it. Put some damn padding in there or something.

To met, it doesn't sound like Switch Pro... yet.. More like Switch Lite (sleeker, lighter, battery efficient).

So marcus sellars was right all along, interesting!

Can't wait to hear about the 'Pro' specs.

I expect a minor upgrade.

Mariko unhackable
Same size and screen
Maybe slightly better battrry life due to better chip
Improved kickstand with different angles

My hope though would be all Switches get a stylus. Yes it isn't the same as DS but tablets and Samsung Note gas shown stylus can work on a capacitive screen

Can we expect a 4k model ? I mean that's the direction Sony amd Microsoft tool with their new models. Even if it's 4k by upscaling, I would love it.

Let's not get carried away.

Talk of a Pro or Switch revision was taking place long before he ever mentioned it. We don't know specs or anything about this new hardware beyond intent of there being new hardware in some capacity next yr.

I'm certainly glad I waited out.

By that point it'll be a more viable system for a Wii U owner as well.
