I think it's very unlikely that their new model will be a mini with non detachable joycons because making a Switch aimed at a younger audience that doesn't play Mario Party, a game incredibly popular with said younger audience would be pretty insane.

Already assumed something like this would got next year, but good to have confirmation. Will hold off on a potential Switch purchase until then.

I guess a Switch Pro is possible in future. A device which will eventually replace the existing model.

- 1080p screen
- Overall higher quality screen
- Same power in handheld as in docked
- Better battery
- More storage space

I got it for BOTW and Odyssey and haven't used my Switch since then, so yeah, kinda sucks lol.
Well that's a bit more on you not being interested in its library than anything else then :P

I get where you're coming from though, I felt the same way when I got my PS4 in 2015 and my 3DS after its first price drop

Switch current size is perfect now. A smaller version would mean smaller joy-cons and while that could work for kids, it wouldn't for most people. Does anyone imagine smaller joy-cons? Same goes with a bigger sized one, Switch is already at the limit of what a portable device is. I know most people don't carry it on their pockets but yeah, a bigger model would be way too big for a handheld device imo.

Guys, this will not be a revolution. Expect only it to be thinner, maybe more RAM and storage, maaaaybe better screen and battery.
And that's it.
Nintendo's already super conservative and current switch is already a miracle. This will be no bombshell

I am guessing this will just be a die shrinked lower heat outputting version of the current Tegra, that can do the clockspeeds of what the old Switch manages docked, whilst not overheating the system or tanking battery life. Which, if they can get it to be smaller physically, could also be achieved with a bigger battery.

I don't think it will be a mini and I don't think it will be a big upgrade, more power, less consumption, overall quality improve of first switch issues. No 1080p screen.

Anyway I'm happy I got my Switch, if it's significant upgrade I will consider it.

Oh boy. Just had a thought. What if Sony did launch ps5 next year. Now it would go directly against a new and improved switch.

That would be a fun battle to watch.

I don't understand the people that want a 1080p screen. Shouldn't we first achieve native 720p in all games?

what is happening to gaming is disgusting, you cant barely buy a game at release because almost 80% of the cases is the cut version and if you want the complete edition you have to wait for the goty or "whatever complete edition", but now that is happening to the consoles too, I cant buy a console on release, because a couple years later, they will release a more powerful console at same price... and I don't talking about slims versions.
This is happening because you "customers" allowed it, if you want to buy a new hardware or new product every 6 month or every year, this is nor your market, go to the pc or mobile...

I'm betting we'll end up with two models eventually:

Switch Pocket/Lite

- Similar size hardware/screen size to a 3DS XL
- Controls are built into the device
- Built in gyro and HD rumble
- Has a mini dock/stand for TV play
- Wirelessly compatible with joy cons and pro controllers

Switch Pro

- 1080p screen
- Overall higher quality screen
- Same power in handheld as in docked
- Better battery
- More storage space

Does NVIDIA has a more powerful portable chip set ready that is feasible to use on devices sized like a Switch?

I remember people saying the X2 is too big to use on a Switch?

Remove the joy-cons and problem solved.

Same question, and is X2 really more powerful than X1 ?

Hmmm it reminds me of a video from Digital Foundry i will go search it.

2.5yrs is hardly 6 months. A revision or upgrade doesn't make the original model worthless. I play my games on my PS4. The PS4 Pro didn't make my PS4 stop working. Don't upgrade. Or wait 2.5yrs and buy then. No one is forcing anyone to buy into a generation early. Tech advances, allows for new opportunities, and companies take advantage of it.

my uncle's boyfriend knows someone who talked to a guy from nintendo. consider it confirmed.
Oh snap, New Nintendo Switch XL Mini HDR VR. Let's go!

All kidding aside, we all expect some form of revision at some point, 2.5 years later seems like a logical timeline, but I doubt we'll get any such revision as some are expecting here. Non-removable Joy-Con? Which are required to play certain games? What? A Switch with the screensize of 3DS? What? This thread is going places.

Yeah, people who upgrade or buy the Pro version of consoles are actually just the minority. The mainstream will always buy the cheapest possible system, and the syste manufacturers wouldn't be able to simply ignore and/or piss them off. They're the main audience.

Good thing you don't have to buy it.

Probably shouldn't buy this model then because in a few years a new model will come out. But then I wouldn't buy that one either because then a new model will come out after that.
I bought an NES, but now they're just giving the games away on their online service??? I feel robbed.

JoyCon revision when

Remember, the DS and 3DS did not see smaller versions- instead they found ways to reduce the price, and release upgraded versions. If this is the Switch XL, it'll have more bells and whistles like a 3DS XL. If this is the 2DSwitch, it'll be barebones to cut down on production costs.

The latter I'd be more interested in seeing how it'd be done. I'd guess a similar form factor as one solid piece which would cut down on the cost of the controllers- removing pieces like some of the motion controls, the IR, the 3D rumble, remove the 32 GB it has (likely down to a lot less for updates) and push users to SD cards, remove the output. Some of that would probably also allow some of the internals to be changed around with a new form factor.

The question is if it'll reduce the price enough and if there's a market that would want a cheaper portable only Switch that isn't really all that portable.

Man I was going to buy a Switch next week, now I don't know what I should do :/

Would you rather own and play Switch games right now or wait for a better model that will release in 9 to 13 months ?
It ultimately depends on if you have issues with the current switch model. Like if 720p LCD screen was a big issue for you you might wanna wait more.

Way too early in my opinion. A switch pro releasing on 2020 with a new Mario, new Zelda and new splatoon/mario kart would have been a better move in my opinion.

Nvidia is done with the X1 and have no interest in shrinking it. The X2 is the natural move for them. Remove the dock from the current model and price drop it. Or only drop it to $249 with a game or two and a Pro retails for $350. Getting the price down by next holiday is a challenge and something they need to solve before Pokemon 2019 releases.
Isn't X2 just a shrunk down X1?

I hate to say it but I would probably buy a Pro version...depends on the features of course. I managed to hold back on buying any of the 3DS revisions but I splurged on a PS4 Pro and I don't regret it.

Man why the hell did I even buy a Switch? I should have just waited. Fuck being an early adopter, it's never a good idea in the games industry.
Your Switch is not going to dissappear, nor are the more than two years you will have had a Switch by the time it comes out. There's no point in letting perfect be the enemy of good when it comes to technology.
Besides, by virtue of the Switch's nature and form factor, chances are there will be upgrade kits with only the revised tablet. And software support will probably be mandatory for the base Switch.
What I wonder is whether this new Switch could have VRR support, and if Nvidia will announce the Tegra chip inside before the revision itself is announced.

I hope they fix the way how the Joycons lock into the main unit. Both sets of mine have already a broken hinge that constantly disconnects my left Joycons.

In fact no i checked this DF video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBS80HA07pM they say that the X2 has twice the memory bandwith of the X1 better more CPU power and slighlty better GPU if i understand it right. Oh and better power efficiency since it's using Pascal tech vs Maxwell tech.

I don't really know if this can translate in a real gap i power, i will let the more knowledgeable people answer that :)

Any other improvements besides the tablet screen in the OP summary? Any rumors whether it's a "Pro/X" model that runs current games better, dare I say even in a higher resolution?

Anyway, not sure if I should be glad or not. I mean, obviously I am, but I was planning on getting a Switch later this year, but not sure if I'm doing that now if there's a new, better, and more powerful version coming out in less than a year.

Well I'm really excited for Smash and the Switch's 2019 lineup, so as long as none of the games become 'New Switch' exclusive I'll be fine! That's the only thing that really stung with the New 3DS.
