Last month, after nearly a year and 90+ hours of sporadically playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2, I finished it. I spent another 10-15 hours working on sidequests (mainly Rare Blade and DLC ones), but eventually threw in the towel because I got to the point where it felt like I was working a courier-like fetch and deliver job and not getting paid for it. :)

That being said, I had a good time with it, and overall, it's currently my favorite JRPG that I've played this generation, not that I've played too many of them. The world design was great, the cutscene direction was beautiful, the soundtrack is excellent, combat was fun (once I understood it), and the QoL features kept me going. On the other hand, some of the Blade designs are embarrassing, field skills are terrible, I loathe the gacha-based Core Crystal system, and pacing is pretty uneven.

Instead of hopping into Torna, I decided to fire up Xenoblade Chronicles 3D on my 3DS instead last night. I'd put maybe 15-20 hours into it several years ago, but I wasn't really feeling it, so I stopped. I have X, but haven't started that, so 2 was the first game in the Xenoblade series that I finished.

But yeah, I don't know if it was all the time spent, knowledge gained, and patience built up from 2, but so far (I started over and am only a couple hours in), 1 is feeling GREAT. Something about its flow, structure, combat, characters/dialogue, and music seem so nicely put together. I mean, obviously the character models are what they are, but I also have to remember that the original game is closing in on being a decade old.

Anyway, I know a lot of folks say to play it on Wii (I have that too), but the portability of 3D means I'm way more likely to play through and finish it. One can only hope that X will make it to the Switch in the form of a remaster at some point. Please bring 1 along for the ride as well, Monolith Soft. I'll gladly buy them again!

In the end, I'm just excited to be into a different JRPG series than my old standbys like FF, DQ, and Persona. I know there are many others like Tales, Ys, etc., but these things take time. ;)

Anyone else go back to 1 after playing later entries? Would love to hear your thoughts/impressions!

After finishing up 2 I booted up 1 and X.

You're absolutely correct that 1 has a nice flow to it. The thing about 2 is that it's very start-and-stop, especially due to its auto-attack only working when standing still. In 1 and especially X you're constantly on the move.

Other flow things are also out in the field. In 2 you have to stop to pick up items, for example. 2 feels really... janky.

I must add that 1 felt surprisingly old or ourdated UI-wise, though. X, on the other hand, felt like coming home. Movement in particular felt so goooood.

I also went back to the first game after playing XC2. Though, on PC with an HD texture mod.

2 improves on a LOT, combat especially. But I still prefer the first game overall. Especially the sense of scale and exploration thats largely missing from 2. Also, story. I like I 1's story more.

I haven't gone back, but I really should. The original XC is a tremendous game. It really resonated with me at the time, and I've only really felt that feeling again with XC2.

I think I'd still love it... though I'm not sure the cast would draw me in, in the same way. I really dug the anime stylings of its sequel.

We desparetly need a remake. Interested to read what people have to say in this thread.

Favorite game of all time. 2 is close though, in my top 7 for sure. I'd kill for a remaster of the original on Switch, or even just a port.

Played 1 again a while ago. It's definitely better in terms of focus and strategy. The sidequests are still garbage, but the writing's a lot better than any of the other Xenoblade games. Not as good as Gears or Saga though. Xenoblade 2 tries to lessen the extent to which the player feels like they're not involved through blade swapping, but the affinity system limits your movement a lot, meaning the player isn't able to focus on positioning and strategy as much as they can in 1 or X. And Shulk's Monado abilities go a long way towards making sure the player's also focusing on their entire party's status as well, but you can always opt to play as Dunban of Melia if you so choose. The world design's great, not as pretty as 2 or X, but undoubtedly better than either in terms of game design. The biggest issue with 1 is that it doesn't offer as much positive feedback as 2 or X do, it might feel a bit too loose in comparison to them too, but the rest of the game's design is so polished and well-executed that it undoubtedly puts it above 2. I'd say that consistently though it's on par, perhaps not as good, as X though.

I'd have to wonder if I'd find the combat too simple and the world unimpressive after playing the complex and sprawling sequels. At the time, I'd never played an open world game and only owned a Wii, so importing the EU version on my newly hacked Wii was a one of a kind, mindblowing experience. I'm sure it's impressive on 3DS hardware though.

I still have such fond memories of playing Xenoblade 1. The best memory I have is that I was blown away by each new giant area that I discovered. This is true for both visual design (on the Wii!) and the amazing soundtrack. Gameplay was very fun as well, quite a bit different from Xeno 2 as well. I do strongly advise to play Xeno 1 before 2 as well.

I tried playing the Wii version a few months after XB2 and I couldnt get into it after loving my first playthrough. It was just too slow and fully of jaggy graphics.

Looking at Xenoblade 1, the gameplay always seemed uninvolved enough that I wouldn't really like it. But then, I've now realized the most compelling gameplay for me in RPGs is usually the exploration and I can just sit through the combat.

Either way I'm now watching my second Let's Play of the game... first Chuggaaconroy, now Nico B.

Thanks for the impressions so far. I was wondering if my feelings were just that early honeymoon thing, but it sounds like I'm not all that far off. :) It really is impressive on the 3DS hardware (the 3D itself though is quite UNimpressive, so I have it turned off), and having the extra camera controls with the eraser nub and the extra shoulder buttons do help.

Also, it sounds like I'll have to bump up X in my priority play list. I was bitter for a while when UPS "lost" my LE, which I know sounds like a silly reason to sour my wanting to play the game, but it is what it is. I think I'm over it now. LOL

Played 1 for the first time after 2. I liked 2 a good bit and due to all the praise for 1, I expected to like it even more. My final thoughts on 1 was that it was a helluva more consistent game than 2 is. Its' lows never reached as low as XB2. With that being said, I actually preferred 2 at the end. It was enjoyable and definitely kept up a brisk pace, but I didn't think there was enough "down time" for me to really come to enjoy and care about each of the party members.

I played XBC1 after I played 2.

It was fine, but boy am I glad I didn't play 1 first. I probably wouldn't have cared enough to play 2.

1 had some cool locations and world building, but I was generally underwhelmed. Maybe that's what I get for playing it after 2, but I personally think XC1 is just ok.

I tried playing 1 years back but I just couldn't get far into it. I felt the combat system was a little too complicated to grasp my head around. I absolutely love Xenoblade 2 and it's really tempting me to try 1 and X again.

I don't think I can go back to playing it without portability though, so I hope they port those to switch.

Finished 1 on Wii years ago, so returned on 3ds after finishing 2.

I found the original's combat to be slow and dull compared to 2. Did like the improved UI and fast travel speeds collared to Wii.

Xenoblade 1 is one of my top 10 games of all time. The story and characters are leagues ahead of anything in 2.

Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and X are my favorite Xenoblade games.

Xenoblade 2 is somewhere. It's not that 2 is bad, it was just a massive step down in my eyes.

Wow, seems like I wasn't the only one who returned to XC1 after finishing XC2.

I started XC1 it in 2014, and even though I got hooked on the game's story, I got horribly smacked around the 14-hour mark because I was severely underleveled and didn't have time to grind. 4 years later, I played and fell in love with XC2 and decided to go back and give XC1 another try and just finished at 90 hours. All I can say is... WOW. What a beautiful game. I think I even like it more than XC2 (although XC2's ending felt more emotional for me), but what a great game and what a fantastic experience.

Of course, XCX is the next step, and the only reason I haven't started that is that it surely feels overwhelming. But after these two, and my renewed love for Monolith Soft, I'm so going there.

I haven't gone back to 1, but I can't think of anything the second game does better aside from graphics.

Story, characters, character design, music, English VA are all much better in 1.

Yes even the combat is better in 1 imo. The player is so much faster and I rather manually use use arts with monado instead of praying for blades to do them whenever they pleas. Also Shulk visions add so much flavor to the combat.

That being said, Xeno 2 was fantastic on it's own.

1 >>>2≥>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>X

X was a disgrace, but I do want them to go back that kind of open world and mechs instead of doing titan worlds/maps over and over.

This is probably going to be me... Eventually? I loved XC2, one of my favorite games ever... But didn't get more than 20 or 30 hours onto either of the previous entries. I'm definitely considering playing one of them after my next RPG after FFXV.

Gameplay-wise: XB1 has like 90% less menu shuffling and character micromanaging than XB2 and wins almost automatically for me based on that.

The story felt way more original too. HD when. T_T

Also loved X. Port when. :P

Xenoblade Chronicles is my favourite game of all time. 2 was really really good. 9.5 out of 10 for me.
But number one is next level. I've finished it twice myself, and I've watched about 3 playthroughs on youtube as well.

The writing in 2 is good, but the writing in 1 is just next level amazing. You can play through it multiple times and find stuff that foreshadows things that happen at the end in the first hour that will BLOW YOUR MIND.
Theres stuff all the way through that reference the greater plot and future twists that is just amazing. I've never seen a game pull it off quite like this one does. Enjoy OP :D keep updating here, can't wait to see what you think of the major twists

I definitely mained her in at least one playthrough. It's also super engaging to soak up agro because let's face it

It's Reyn time.

Playing Melia at high levels was more satisfying than watching Reyn piss off entire clusters of enemies solely for the huge numbers she was consistently capable of.

800+ Ether stat
Chill Plus VI
Back Attack VI
Summon Lightning double-stacked
Summon Ice on Deck
Ether Burst active

Run up behind an entire group facing the aggro target, drop that ice attack, get 25K damage per enemy plus an additional 15K per second over ten seconds, watch the entire group turn and glare at Melia. Throw up reflection for lulz before either everything dies a horrible death or Melia gets squished.

I love the first one but 2 does almost everything much better. It's especially baffling to see so many people in this thread say the characters were better in 1, I felt they could be very flat at times (Shulk almost has no character development which is a shame because he is otherwise really likable) and didn't have anywhere near enough interactions aside from heart to hearts.
The combat was fun and it felt more frantic than 2 but it was also very simple and shallow overall. Also healing is a pain in 1.
No field skills is great though, and not having full maps from the start has both its advantages (pushed me to explore more) and disadvantages (getting lost and frustration from having holes until you finally find all the locations).

I bought a Wii for this one game and it was totally worth it. It's one of my favourite JRPGs ever!

XB2 was mediocre. Didn't even bother with X coz silent protagonist/character creator.

i had a similar progression as the OP since i had played the first game on 3DS years ago but stopped and then went back and finally finished it after having finished 2.
only big difference is that i played X before 2 back when it came out. X's movement did feel the best out of the 3 games since 1 and 2 you don't feel agile enough in comparison.

Give me giant robots too, and this is the perfect game.

Fuck yeah!

And , Spearbreak > Starlight Kick combo is an auto topple and just so damn good!

IIRC, no one else has a self sufficent topple combo. I think Dunban might, but it requires a chain attack or something?

Also, jsut make sure you never ever let the AI control Melia. Its terrible with her. Shulk either, which means you almost never have them on the same team, which is fine because Melia can hit Mechon just fine without Shulk.

Also, keep in mind that Melia's chain element is "White" so she can take place of any color in an attack chain.

I didn't have too much time, but I played another hour or so last night. I'm still in Colony 9, just running around talking to everyone and stacking up quests. I do remember how overwhelmed I was the first time when after just a short time, I had like 20 sidequests stacked. @_@ I like XBC2's system of being able to sort and select an active one, but by the same token, it's nice that they are all just auto-tracked and you get instantly rewarded when they trigger. If any of that was manual, it'd be a complete mess.

Wow, seems like I wasn't the only one who returned to XC1 after finishing XC2.

This sounds very similar to what happened to me. It's been a while, but I do remember that around the 15-ish hour mark, I was getting destroyed. I chalk a lot of that up to just not understanding what I was doing. I feel much more confident this time around!

It's been great reading these impressions -- thanks for everyone's responses so far; I've been reading them all.

Exactly. Xc1 is one my favorite JRPGs ever, a real masterpiece with ambition, a great OST and an epic story. Xc2 comes closely though, the improvements in gameplay and graphics are great and the OST is even better for me. X is a good game, but the lack of story sections and the "mandatory" aspect of the sidequests (the game increases recommended level a lot between main missions) kind of killed my interest in finishing the game.

Whew, some of the unique monsters are kicking my butt. Most haven't been too bad, but there have been a few so far that I'll have to come back to. This was probably the case my first time through as well. I don't even remember chain combos being a thing, so having that familiarity from 2 is helping. I'm totally hooked at this point. My time just in and around Colony 9 feels like it could be a near complete game in itself.

As an update, I'm now at about the point where I quit the first time, and yeah, I'm loving just about everything in this game so far. There are things, both big and small that I'm appreciating about it (some have been mentioned by other posters, but I'll repeat them here):

I like not having to stop to pick up collectibles (outside of mining points and chests). XBC2 made this process so slow if you had multiple Blades with applicable field skills that netted you more stuff... you might be sitting at a spawn point for quite a while waiting for the animations to play.

Related to that, and it's a small thing, but I love the Collectopaedia! LOL It's kind of a nice, quick way to reward you for running over all the collection spots, and getting the rewards for completing each line and page feels good, like an additional achievement later on top of everything else.

Combat is really making sense this time, and there's an addictive, tangible quality to it in that I feel like I'm doing more with my main as opposed to three-counting everything in XBC2. On the flipside, not sure if it's possible, but I don't like that I can only seem to control my main with only basic commands for the rest of the party. It was nice in XBC2 being able to trigger their moves to create the chains. For the most part though, Reyn has been good about toppling enemies after I inflict break, which lets me then daze, so yeah, it feels great!

I still don't quite understand the gem furnace thing (seems somewhat RNG-based depending on affinity and who is doing what? I suppose I could read up on it :)), but the whole gem slot system in general is easy enough to understand, reminding me of the Materia-like system from FF7. I guess they did something similar in XBC2 with having to refine cores, but without the little animation that plays, so maybe that was better the second time around?

Skills, affinities, and skill links also are pretty straightforward and make a lot of sense. It wasn't until way too late into XBC2 that I even started paying attention to many of my affinity charts, which became a huge blocker for me when it came time for field skill/mastery-related things.

Gear/loot management is a bit unwieldy, but I found the same to be true with the sequel for the most part. I just sell all my gear that has no or few slots, and hold onto the unique stuff just because.

I'm also finding the sidequests (probably because of the flashback/visions and affinity system) to be a little more engaging than those in XBC2. Could just be the early game honeymoon thing, but I do think they're a little better in this game.

Map system is easier to understand, and fast-traveling feels more intuitive. I had a really hard time with XBC2's maps.

Anyway, I don't want to sound too down on XBC2 (like I said in the OP, I really enjoyed it), but 1 is really opening my eyes to a lot of things. I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch too, but this is already a really long post. :) Thanks for reading.

Glad to hear you're getting on well.

I think I read an interview on Eurogamer many moons ago where someone from Monolith Soft (it might have been been the big boss himself) said that Xenoblade Chronicles was the first game where they got the time they needed to make the game they wanted to make.

And I think that really shows.

X went through some difficulties and XC2 was heavily outsourced while a large number of the team worked on BoTW.

There's an extra level of polish in the original.

I think its sequels undoubtedly do some things better. But the way it's all brought together in the first game is a level above both of its successors.

However, while X and XC2 are a little bit messier, that's part of their beauty to me.

Im actually playing through the first game right now on my Wii U, finished Xenoblade 2 last week, will play X after the first one.

It's a good game, but an ugly one too, but nothing that blocks my enjoyment. However, what I don't like about Xenoblade 1 is the treasure chests the enemies drops, liked Xenoblade 2s method of just dropping the stuff better and I also don't really like the side quests and the "blue drops" that's put on the battlefield.

Pretty much, I don't like how resources drops from enemies and the resources you can pick up on the ground in the game. I also don't like the menu system in Xenoblade 1, feels so "cumbersome".

The original Xenoblade Chronicles is the by far best of the series. I wish they would remaster it...or even better make a proper remake.
OP mentioned it himself, but it should really be played on the Wii and a big TV instead of the 3DS screen. It looses so much scale and awe that way.

That's interesting! I do remember reading about a chunk of the team working on BOTW (and there are things in that game I can see were influenced by this series). I'm looking forward to playing through the rest of this game and then moving on to X next, or maybe a relatively short breather with Torna.

I played some 1 recently and noticed that I like the way NPCs greet you when you talk to them. It's just a small thing I wish they kept.
Good point! I like that too. :)

I kinda like seeing a swath of 5 chests littering the battlefield after I've been through a larger fight, but I can see how that would get annoying. I do love the resource points around the world though. I don't mind the blue dots, and I like that I can just run across them instead of having to press A and sit there.

I'm just about to head to the Colony 6 area, so I'm not that far into it (15 hours give or take, trying to knock out as many sidequests as possible along the way!).

It was my favorite JRPG of last gen. Was hugely disappointed by the sequels, sadly (especially XC2).
