We will find out for sure soon as the October games have a few of them

Yeah. Shouldn't be that much longer, hopefully.

Another point of interest is it seems the European page has removed all listings of upcoming games, so I suspect someone may have jumped the gun on the titles (which would probably more so point to this happening).

That's not what emulation is about, emulation is meant to emulate the original hardware.

MS improves performance and image quality in their emulated consoles, almost every emu out there has options to improve emulated games or fix original hardware shortcomings (wobbly polygons on PSX)

Is this bizarro World?

Let me guess; you prefer colorized movies, don't you?

Apples and oranges comparison...

Honestly, it entirely depends on the developer and director of the emulation program, which direction they want to go with. Some want to emulate as accurate a feasibly possible, maintaining all the warts and faults of the original. Sega Ages for instance, outside of quality of life changes (and not counting the games that are actual ports in this collection), they're trying to maintain as accurate as possible to how they perform on the original hardware.

Some definitely want to take advantage of the newer hardware and push higher resolutions and performance than how they were on the original. And I think that's fine as well.

Different approach for different developers.

But yeah, it's just a matter of preference. You're absolutely not wrong for feeling that way.

I would have assumed the SP would have been the versions of the game with multiplayer enabled. Zelda though, kinda puts that theory in jeopardy.

Possible they're purchasable, which Aisback noted what it could mean (Separate Purchase). Also, Nintendo Europe removed the upcoming list, so I suspect they jumped the gun at mentioning those (as none of the localized branches have those listed there).

Either way, we'll see soon enough. Hopefully by Thursday, at least.

When are we getting the October games then?

It'd be really nice if, just once in awhile, Nintendo actually lets people know what the fuck is going on.

If so, i hope all the people that bought the game before digitally can have the separate purchase for free!

Oh god, I kinda hope. While I don't own some of these games at all on 3DS (not counting Wii, but that doesn't have an account system and I simply don't own a Wii U), that would be great to carry those purchases for the few I do have over.

>options to improve

Most emulators have options to make it look ugly as hell, and some have decent up scaling available to them due to the content of the games. MS's emulator for the Xbox/360 in the one can make things look and run better because the games were potentially designed to be able to do that. Notice how not every game is able to run 60fps/better visuals for Xbox/360 emulation? River City Ransom might not be able to run at full 60fps, or the slowdown isn't hardware related, and it runs based on the number of active objects on screen.

It would be more like watching the 4k remaster of Lawrence of Arabia instead of a faded old film reel.

Though none only one of these NES games are anywhere close to as good as that film within their medium, so maybe the comparison breaks down there.

Acting like improved frame rates over the original changes the experience for the worse the way that poor colorization can is very odd.

That's my hope. While all the new games each month so far scheduled are pretty good (unlike some of the Black Box stinkers were got in the launch lineup) only 3 a month is too light. I think doing 4-5 should really be the minimum, maybe a new game weekly instead.

Honestly, this is one thing that I would be annoyed about if it didn't happen (or at the very least, some kind of discount).

I don't think that is too much to ask.

I can't see Nintendo offering purchasable versions of these games as IMO their entire reason for doing it this way is to take the digital 'ownership' away from people and control everything.

Never again going forward (post Switch consoles) can the user expect to get a digital thing free or with a discount etc for previously having purchased them on older systems, you never paid money for them directly you were just paying for the service.

It's Nintendo's dream situation!

The slate has been wiped clean, VC is dead.

Again, just my theory.

No mention of the SP, which again proves that it is an EUROPE only something which probably means 50hz stuff

Maybe, but given they pulled the listings for upcoming titles all together (not just the SP titles), I find that a bit suspicious. We'll see on release, though.

Plus, looking at their Twitter account, they make no mention of the SP titles:

That list for the remainder of the year is a little disheartening. Only 15 games and 1/3 of them are repeats or some kind?

Never played Dodgeball, it looks really good for an NES game

It's insanely fun in multiplayer. My friends and I had a favorite special move where the ball would go up in the sky out of view and eventually drop on an opposing team member and he would be knocked out for the rest of the game. We called it Death from Above.

Yeah, I'm bummed there's no Super Mario Bros. 2, both the US and Japanese version.

For me, the Super Mario games are basically the only NES games I care much about at all. Never managed to stick with Zelda 1, Zelda 2 is interesting for how different it is but I didn't play it for long either, Metroid 1 is very close but no map is an issue for me (I really do want to get over that hurdle one of these days, I love the franchise so much).

I will say that one thing I like about this this service is that I probably will end up at least trying a lot more NES games than I ever would have otherwise. I already own all the ones I care about on the 3DS, so this will be a good chance to try out the system a little more in depth.

can't wait for 2021 when my favorite obscure title finally comes to the service, only for the new Nintendo console to come out, thus resetting the drip feed cycle!
I believe they'll still need to test these old af games to make sure it runs like they should especially with online.
I'm not sure if they'll be able to give such quick turnaround.
oh yes, the HUNDREDS OF PERSON HOURS needed to test the emulation of these games is simply staggering! we should be thankful that they are releasing them this quickly as is!

I'd disagree with that. Both SMB1 and Zelda 1 were/are very seminal and transformative games for the medium, arguably moreso than SMB3 even. And personally I'd say both also hold up remarkably well.

That said I agree it'd be nice if NERD's emulators were more fully featured. Things like removing the sprite limit would help with the Kunio games in particular but even just more options in terms of shaders, borders, control config, rewind, etc, would be really appreciated. At least the core emulation, input lag and image quality is top notch, those are basic things publishers (including Nintendo) don't always nail either.

Also Metroid is pretty dam crazy in that regard. Granted it took Super Metroid to truly break down the doors and inspire other games in the future.

I think you are right.

Based on the recent data mining it looks like we will eventually get SNES and N64 apps as well, seperate from NES. And I would guess those will require seperate add-on subscriptions.

If anyone thinks those systems will be added without additional costs then they are delusional.

I mean there's only three months left so 10 original new games is pretty good I think!
The bigger issue is that, for most people, most of these games don't hold up at all in 2018. Even Super Dodgeball, great for its time, shows its age terribly and won't be that fun for most people.

That's the fundamental flaw in trying to entice people with NES games. The vast majority of these games are a novelty and people will maybe play them a couple times. If you're trying to incentivise subscriptions this is a really shit way to do it. On top of that, if I'm waiting for Smash Bros to sub I don't have to worry about missing out on October and November's NES games because they will always be there, so I have no reason not to wait. With Plus and Gold you forever miss out on games offered when you aren't subbed.

I'm waiting for Smash Bros, personally. Then i'll have no choice. But I'm not subbing before it releases, there's just no incentive for me.

Honestly if they have to charge more, it has to be for N64/GC games only, not SNES games that are pretty much the same as NES for a modern hardware, it's just a matter of paying the licenses for third party titles.

Yeah, NES games are terrible imo. They don't hold up at all.

I mean... There's titles like Super Mario Bros. 3 (and even USA/2), Kirby Adventure, Tiny Toon Adventures (and a couple other licensed games, really, through Konami and Capcom), and not to mention, the Famicom version of Final Fantasy III is great. Maybe not the best looker, but some of the monster sprite design is pretty damn good, and has decent music and game play. I'd argue there's elements that I feel work better than the DS version, as well. Don't forget the Dragon Quest series as well.

And there's more too I can't name off the top of my head. NES has a good library, especially during it's later years. Honestly, I'd hope that down the road that Nintendo and the 3rd Party Companies will eventually make these available, either paid or part of the NES/Family Computer Classics (preferably both).

It's incredibly difficult and fun. One of the best games and not just counting the NES!

Played some Ice Climbers and Balloon Fight the other day. Climbers was okay, though the odd platforming behavior definitely takes some getting used to. Balloon Fight was dope, however, and is a decent substitute until someone bring the original Joust to the Switch.
