Mobile Marketing Data Labo, a research firm in Japan, has published a report on the usage of video game systems across different age groups.

The survey found that elementary school students in Japan listen to music primarily on their Nintendo 3DS, more than any other age group in Japan. The reason this is so is because a large number of elementary school students living in Japan own a Nintendo 3DS.

Out of the surveyed elementary school students, 66.2% own a Nintendo 3DS, 16.9% own a Nintendo DS, and 36.9% own a Nintendo Switch. We have to also keep in mind that the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DSi are the only systems that come with software to stream music; the Nintendo Switch does not have this feature but Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will allow players to listen to over 800 music on the go. And elementary school students usually do not own smartphones until they're in high school.

This is actually a neat little way for 3DS, as it actually targets the market sector for younger children who couldn't have access to smartphones to listen to music and browse the internet with.

(But I don't know if Twitter and Facebook have both published their apps on the 3DS...)

When I was a kid my Gameboy was my music player. Boot up a game and many had nice sound tests in their menus.

When I was in Japan recently I visited a famous temple in Kyoto, and there with me was a group of school kids who I assume were on a field trip. I saw a few of them using their 3DSes as cameras to take pictures.

Makes sense. They need a machine that can take play music and take pictures, but also play Pokemon.

3DS can stream music? I know you can load music from SD card but I didn't know you can stream it.
If you provide Wi-Fi to it, sure, the way most kids do it is available. Maybe you heard of it. It's called YouTube.

That said, since they mention DSi, I think they got so used to streaming they forgot what the word means.

That's really cool, I remember my siblings loving the camera feature on the DSi and using it all the time. I always forget that the DS line also targeted kids heavily and a lot of them wouldn't have smartphones and the like.

When I was at daycare in elementary school, we had this toy thing that had a speaker with a microphone and an auxiliary cord. A group of us would be "radio DJs," speaking on the microphone about what we were going to play next and then playing a song from our collection of GB games. Some of those games had some bangin'-ass tunes!

I'm not surprised. There are a ton of features on 3DS that feel more tailored towards a Japanese audience.

Not surprised in the least. That 3DS music player is pretty cool and I must have listened to hundreds of hours of music on it.

Don't they know they're slowing down their OS?

/s

The dumb ass folder limit killed all interest in using the 3DS as a music player. All their apps had annoying restrictions. The volume wasn't great either.

That's pretty interesting. Also shows how incredibly backwards they went with the Switch.

Edit: on the camera thing, that's just rough. image quality is terrible on the 3DS.

That's why Nintendo introduced the camera on the DSi in the first place, to be fair. Folks in Japan love taking pictures.

So do I, and I had to sit and wait like 20 minutes for a few kids to sit there and re-try their 3DS pictures a dozen times to get it just right. =[ I did get some great pics though, despite the clouds =]

Sakurai's smash segment of a woman dramatically sauntering off down the street listening to Luigi's Mansion vindicated?

For a long time, the PSP was my favorite music player, but at one point I switched to the DSi. I didn't use the 3DS as a music player much, because around that time I got a PSP Go.

The reason why I used DSes and PSPs instead of smartphones? I organize my music by folders, and for a long time there was no good music player on Android that allowed for browsing music through folders. Now I use VLC for Android, which is the literal best thing.

This is beautiful and poetic.

I remember being left in awe listening to Gargoyle's Quest music through the earbuds that came with the Gameboy.
Oh man, that series never received the recognition it deserved. I remember really loving the world map music. It was one of the first big adventure games I remember ever playing. If one would consider it a psuedo rpg , it's certainly one of my first forays into the genre. Epic for it's time.

Interesting stuff, but I'm hung up on the fact the research firm is named "Labo."

Short for "laboratory." Keep in mind that Japanese doesn't feature consonants that aren't /n/ or /m/ at the end of syllables, so "lab" would be very hard to say without adding another syllable. Hence, "labo."

Not gonna lie, I legit used my 3DS as my mp3 player in high school before I got a cheap smartphone to use as one. I'm pretty sure I still have all my mp3s still on the SD card in it.

I mean it was either that or my 2 gig iPod shuffle or a shitty $20 mp3 player my dad got me that barely worked lmao.

Ha. This takes me back. My baby brother used to use his 3DS to listen to music all the time.

Back when I first got my 3DS I had a phone issue not long after I got it and loaded a few podcasts on it. It worked fine, I could see how a lot of younger kids would absolutely rip a few songs of YouTube and load them on their SD card.

From my time in Middle School to highschool I was using my DSi and 3DS to listen to music on and take pictures with, since I didn't have a phone (so from 2008-2012)
