But they literally tell you why.
Fans have been tearing the last two games to shreds, also telling you why.

What is this selective hearing/reading with MP fans?
Why? Because they were "boring"? I never understood that critique. Mario Party games have never aspired to be more than fun laid-back party games, and they have always succeeded in that regard with every group of people I've ever hung out with. It was an even more popular pastime than Mario Kart.

The last two games were shat all over because of the car. Which, as I mentioned, I firmly agree with, lol.

Anyone else feeling the scores not match up with what's actually being said? From what I've been reading, the boards are small, boring, with limited options, and there being only four to boot.

Like the board game aspect is at least a solid third of what comprises Mario Party. Nd Cube already had amazing minigames in 9 and 10, to hear that the board game aspect got better, but not by much, is sort of disappointing.

That's what I read too and I'm not liking this at all. To me Mario Party isn't only about the mini-games, but moreso about the glorious boards. I want them to be unique and beautiful, with thrills and momentum. Like Toad's Midway Madness in MP4 for example. It feels like the game will fail to live up to my expectation on that front. I'll definitely have to try it for a couple of hours before making my own decision on it.

Just watched the GameXplain review. Was Monty Mole stressing out about hitting toy versions of his own kind? That's amazing attention to detail.

Oh yeah, I should probably post my own review hey - https://www.monamiibo.com/super-mario-party-review-switch/

I had a lot of fun with it over the past few days playing it by myself and with my family, but we're probably done with it for the time being. The minigames are great, but they're spread too thin across the various modes. In some of them you're guaranteed to be repeating minigames if you play them even twice. Playing through all the routes in the river rafting mode got painful because it was selecting from the same, small pool of minigames each time and it got really repetitive.

Getting a more traditional boardgame mode back is good, but I found the boards themselves really dull. Their designs weren't interesting and they were lacking in fun and dangerous gimmicks. The 2v2, Star Rush-esque mode was cool, that could be a lot of fun with a regular group of 4 people.

So yeah, enjoyed it but I think the way its structured means it won't be very replayable. I'll bring it out when I'm with friends, having new people to play it with would freshen it up.
How does it play for low skilled players? I really want to play with my 4 year old son.

I'm sorry, but how is this different, if not better, than previous MP titles where you had to have 4 controllers?

The switch must be the first console ever I have 5 controllers (2 set of joycons and a pro) for MP games. Well, the pro does not work here :P
The controllers are also way more expensive than past consoles.

I have 2 pair of joycons and a pro. But im in the minority.

I wonder if the low scores for this series are just because reviewers play it enough in a short period of time to get really annoyed at it. That's why I've always thought less of the series :p

What is it that people want these boards to feature? Remember the board is just a catalyst to the mini games...As long as those are in point then they've won in my book.

Can't wait to play a proper Mario Party after all this time. Never actually had a chance to play one of the Car ones, but this looks a lot more interesting for sure.

Does anyone know the price of that Super Mario Party + joy-con bundle? Or was that just some unofficial thing? Or did I dream it...

Oh wait, crap, it's not available until november. :/ I needed new joy-con NOW.

The big new Mario Party virtual board game on the massively popular new Nintendo console... winding up with... four boards?

Like, okay, board variety isn't the be-all-and-end-all but... come on.

From what I've been seeing/hearing, Challenge Road is just not really appealing and doesn't offer much excitement.

Seems like this is an amazing game to play with friends in regards to the extremely well done minigames and extra modes, but this probably isn't the best for people who want single player content or are more of a fan of the board game segments.

For any of the past Mario Parties you needed to buy up to 3 more controllers for 4 players. With this you need to buy one set of joycons.

If buying more controllers didn't stop people before I don't see why making fewer purchases will stop them now.
Most of us only have the included joycons and pro controllers as the other option. That's what pisses many off. I bought an extra pair of joycons to just to get 3 player mario party going.

Yeah, the car gimmick is awful. They also removed the joy of actually obtaining a star, since you could get *dozens* of them. All of it lead to some pretty "Meh" games with IRL friends, and me shelving the games after a couple hours of play.

The return to the original formula is such a good thing.

That part about pizza and pineapple in Vooks' review has insured me to never listen to their opinion again.

But it's the same with the Wii -- a lot of the mini games required motion control, using the Wiimotes. If you had two Wiimotes and a Classic Controller, you'd still have to buy two more Wiimotes for 4 players.

Mario Party has always been kind of an expensive proposition if your friends aren't bringing controllers to the fray.

It sounds like they spread themselves thin. I'm glad normal Mario Party is back and that's most important. It sucks they spread themselves out so nothing is fully fleshed out.

I don't think that's true. With the Wii, for instance, I believe the controllers went for 40 dollars. If you were lucky and got 2 controllers with your system( I only had one) you'd have to spend 80 dollars to have enough controllers for 4 players, or in my case 120 dollars.

Now, you spend 70.

I can't for the life of me remember how much N64 controllers went for back in the day, but I'm guessing it was also more expensive to purchase 3 controllers as opposed to a set of joycons.

So the sense I'm getting is that it's a very good foundation but it could use more content. Which sounds about the same as how people described Mario Tennis Aces, which did indeed get a bunch more content. Hopefully this will get some DLC (preferably free) too.

Most of us only have the included joycons and pro controllers as the other option. That's what pisses many off. I bought an extra pair of joycons to just to get 3 player mario party going.

Again how is this different from any other Mario Party, let alone any other local multiplayer game?

The only difference is that you only need to buy one extra thing to have 4 controllers. Whereas on the N64 for example you needed to buy 3 controllers. It's just a weird complaint to levy at this game specifically.

Hopefully this gets some support post-launch, maybe new boards, characters, or mini-games. Seems like it could use just a splash more content.

This will likely be the "return to form" that Mario Party needs.

I actually enjoyed MP9 because it was a refreshing change up after the lackluster MP8. Should have been a one-off though, because MP10 in my opinion is kind of crappy and wasted its time trying to prove the worth of the Wii U Gamepad and Amiibo.

Wow! Incredible scores for a Mario Party game. Best in the series since the original back 1999. I knew it would deliver, day Zero.

You are confirming my fear then. The boards being uninteresting, lacking in visual splendor and lacking in fun or interactive action moments is a huge letdown for me. The MP franchise is very repetivite in its gameplay and the boards themselves are the main reason for good replayability. At least, this is what drove me to replay them again and again and again. Nothing like a good board to help you feel like yout progression is worth a damn. In SMP, it seems like there are too few many of them, while also being small and dull. That settles it as a no-deal in my case.

I'm still going to try it and hopefully I'll change my mind, but right now I feel disappointment rather than excitement...

I get what you mean since $80 is nothing to sneeze at but you could've bought just one https://store.nintendo.com/ng3/us/p...lse&productId=prod840595&categoryId=cat831381

Also if you're serious about Switch ownership and you've had yours for at least a year, you should have a backup set of joycon already. It's kind of necessary especially if you expect to have company over.

So basically the second best reviewed Mario Party game after the 1st one? I'm in.

Not too worried about 4 boards. Going by the other MP Switch games, it sounds like they'll be adding more content over time to keep players coming back.

I'm glad it's reviewing well, and the game looks really good, but I really wish one day Nintendo could really ship a Mario spin off game that isn't lacking in content. We've seen it with Aces, and now with this: they have a great foundation but it feels almost rushed. 4 small boards? We come so close to a great package once again.

Even if there is, they'll most likely charge for it. This game is a step in the right direction, but I do wish there was more content, which has been an issue with MP for several games now.
hard to say how Nintendo will handle hypothetical post content. paid multiplayer content seemingly ended with the Wii U, but that was one game (and then there's Pokken). Splatoon, ARMS, etc all had free content, so maybe SMP could follow the same route. just not enough data to plot a graph, methinks

maybe there'll be DLC

yea, I can't have that kind of expectation of ND Cube
if pretty much every other nintendo game for switch has proven anything, it's that the game will get decent post-launch support. and this time ND cube doesn't have to worry about creating 3DS games or putting out another game in a year or two, so they'll have time to work on the game after it releases.

To play 4-player SMP, you need to buy one set of joycons, $80. To play 4-player Mario Party 1, you needed to buy 3 N64 controllers, $90(plus inflation).

I think it's TPC that manages Pokkèn, not Nintendo.

Yep. One of my most anticipated franchises to see on the Switch is Mario Golf, but this type of thing really takes the wind out of my sails for that. I'll be massively disappointed if they make it as sparse in content as Aces and Party.

I sure hope they take the DLC approach from now on instead of crapping out annual sequels.

I bought Aces for the SP and was tremendously disappointed with it. Finished it pre-nerf in 2-3 hours then I had nothing else to do since the game was so barebone. I was rather salty. Fortunately I've managed to sold the game to someone for a good price so while I did lost money in the end, it wasn't so bad. SMP sounds like it is lacking in boards variety too....

Man if they screw up golf then I think I'm done with their Mario spin-off games.
