Metacritic - 78

OpenCritic - 79

Kotaku - Positive

Despite a few minor hiccups, Super Mario Party offers precisely what I wanted: a refreshed, ridiculous and majorly replayable virtual board game that won't totally end my friendships, but might put a few at risk.

Polygon - Positive

On a console that feels like it's starting to overflow with third-party releases, Super Mario Party is an essential party game to win over family and friends during the upcoming holiday season. This Mario Party goes back to what makes the series so captivating, and it feels like I've rediscovered why I enjoyed the first title almost 20 years ago.

GameXplain - Liked

I liked Super Mario Party, I wanted to like it even more. And at times, I really did. But it unfortunately just doesn't take too long to see everything there is to see. But with the right friends, it can still stay fresh.

EGM - 9/10

After the misstep that was Mario Party 10, Nintendo has gone back to basics with Super Mario Party. The competitive boards and minigames are back, along with a few welcome gameplay twists that make this party game feel like a fresh start for the series. From two-console minigames to the Joy-Con motion controls, the new Switch features elevate the entire experience, making Super Mario Party the best in the series so far.

VentureBeat - 82/100

Super Mario Party's new modes offer a welcome break from what some might consider the main attraction: the board game. They're faster, and they focus on two of the Nintendo Switch's strengths that make it such a special console in the first place — good Joy-Con motion controls and fun co-op play. For me, it makes this Super Mario Party the best in franchise history, even if I don't care for the staid board game.

Metro - 8/10

The best Mario Party in a very long time, and while it's shallow and silly it's also one of the few times casual and core gamers can compete in perfect (dis)harmony.

NintendoLife - 8/10

Recent Mario Party games have previously had a somewhat sterile feel to them, but with Super Mario Party that simply isn't the case. This isn't a cash-grab with Mario's face on the front; this is a well-constructed and beautifully realised Mario Party game which takes the series right back to its roots, but without being a straightforward rehash. There are a few interesting ideas that feel a little bit underdeveloped, but on the whole Super Mario Party is a true return to form.

We Got This Covered - 4/5

While the most stubborn and curmudgeonly of gamers will find time to complain about an overemphasis on luck over skill, Super Mario Party and its bevy of mini-games are sure to please casual gamers and series fans alike.

Destructoid - 7.5/10

I have a lot of quibbles with Super Mario Party that could have drowned it, but the extras pull it up above water. 80 new minigames, most of which aren't busts, is a feat. Having a team-based mode where you can move around freely and going back to basics with the core board game (goodbye car, hopefully see you never!) was a good move. Restricting play options and easing up on the amount of boards available? Not so much.

IGN - 7.3/10

Super Mario Party is the best Mario Party in two console generations, but even with a few real winners among the 80 minigames, the party might get stale.

Game Informer - 7.25/10

Despite lackluster board design and side modes that can become repetitive, Super Mario Party is a fun group game that showcases a diverse collection of minigames. With so many different modes, it's easy for you and your friends to consume the entertaining minigames Super Mario Party delivers.

CGMagazine - 7.5/10

Boo is a vile cheater and I shun him forever.

Press Start - 7/10

Super Mario Party has successfully stripped back a lot of the bloat to return it back to the simple, fun and classic game that it was intended to be. At the same time, the game cleverly uses a number of key Nintendo Switch features making it a game that almost anybody could enjoy. Unfortunately, the weirdly implemented online and lack of boards are only thing stopping it from joining the most top tier of Switch titles.

Vooks - 3/5

Like a pizza with pineapple on it, Super Mario Party is an attempt at going with what works and then throwing something unappetising on top. It's the game that tries too hard to please everyone, but at the end of the night, the party leaves things a bit flat.

As a standard, 74 is the 2nd highest Mario Party has been and that was 17 years ago with MP3.

EDIT: The best is 79 with the very first game. Apologies.

Pretty good so far. Happy to at least be moderately excited for a new Mario Party again.

The 'lack of boards' is interesting to me.

Other games in the series may have had 6, but 4 isn't exactly a massive deal if they're all good.

Seems like the game got a pretty positive reception, not mindblowing, but alright. Excellent stuff by me. Really excited about the game.

Pre-ordered this one. Not mindblowing scores but these type of games is why I bought the Switch anyway. Looking forward to be charmed by Mario and gang.

I don't think that CGMagazine is 7/5...

https://kotaku.com/super-mario-party-the-kotaku-review-1829480351

Kotaku quite positive:
Despite a few minor hiccups, Super Mario Party offers precisely what I wanted: a refreshed, ridiculous and majorly replayable virtual board game that won't totally end my friendships, but might put a few at risk. It's saturated with small (and large) touches that give the game character, but respectfully relies and improves on classic mechanics. Chaos still reigns, yet with more opportunities for strategy, Super Mario Party has aged at pace with its audience.

After Splatoon 2, Arms and Mario Tennis Aces I think Super Mario Party will get post-launch support as well. More boards are probably in the works.

Looking good so far!

It's true. The reality of most Mario Party games is that only 4 or so boards are really played on since the others just plain suck.

Like, you're never going to boot up Mario Party 2 and play on Mystery Land for example.

I'll be playing this game in a tournament setting (of sorts) this weekend so I hope to have a good impression of it when that happens.

So it's around the mark of previous Mario Party games? Again online takes a hit in the score and then there are a lack of boards? D: so close.

Sounds about average (maybe a bit above average) for a Mario Party. It's a genre where I feel there's essentially a "cap" on how well it can review overall- I don't think you'd ever see a board game /party game score higher than 85-90 average.

So what happens if, out of the 4 boards in this game, only 2 of them are good? Like simply having less boards isn't a guarantee they're all going to be good.

Online unfortunately isn't active yet but it's just the minigames which doesn't give it a great deal of value in my eyes

The scores are not what i value with mario party since its start.

Its the content. So even if this game got 9's its still inferior to MP3 or MP6.

The low number of boards was a concern of mine as soon as they showed the Star Rush-type boards. They're fun enough, but I wish they had gone all in on the classic boards. Nevertheless, it's a huge step in the right direction for the series, and I hope they continue to build on this.

They should bring back old bourds, with spacing modified to fit the 6 dice block

Love to see Towering Treetop, faire square, snowflake lake return from 6

Waluigi island island from 3

Many of the complaints mention a lack of boards, but this is something that can be fully remedied through future DLC (which I expect to happen).

I'm excited.

Not having the traditional board mode be playable online seems like one of the biggest missed opportunities I've seen.

I really don't care what the reviews will say. I'm excited for this game. Mario Party and Smash are the first games I thought of when Eurogamer leaked that the NX would be portable and have detachable controllers a few years ago.

Now, finally, here we are. Portable local multiplayer that anyone can enjoy.

Still crazy. The earlier Mario Parties were insane amounts of fun yet never reviewed that high.

I actually want to buy it this year. I think I'm going to hold off until I get a second set of JoyCons so I can have 4 people play. I was planning on doing that this around Black Friday and Thanksgiving and Christmas will be a good time to play this. I'm hoping the online gets added to as well. The single player mode was nice to see too.

I don't get this mindset. Actual, full on legit criticisms are being listed in all of these reviews and then you just call genre bias.
