My hype has died when I found out there's no handheld mode. What was wrong with DS/3DS's download and play mode? All three of them were crazy fun.

Plus, I'm not a fan of wiggle mini games. Why they still exist, I don't know. I think I'll wait for a more traditional MP game for Switch instead.

Because you can't play most (or almost all) of the minigames? I thought this was already settled.

I am relatively hyped. Feeling really disappointed about online, and a new pair of Joy-Cons would be necessary, which I'm definitely going to get someday, but not now.

I travel a lot and life happens so a lot of my closest friends that I game with have moved. Get that it wouldn't be ideal but no online for the boards kills it for me

I'm just telling people waiting on reviews:

Baseline for Mario Party is 70 MC. Anything higher than that is a good sign.

Green (75+) MC is miracle territory.

With holidays coming up, that means seeing more family and friends, and Mario Party is perfect for that. I'm very hyped.

I'm pretty excited for it. Every time I see footage from it I think it looks pretty good. Still disappointed in no online boards but I think online minigames is a start.

Mario Party will always shine in local multiplayer. Even if they do add board play online one day, it's only the true experience when you have people there playing with you. Having played all of the Mario Parties with four people, my opinion from videos so far is that this one is going to be up there with the better ones. It'll certainly be more fun to play with friends then 8,9 and 10 were. (Although the beauty of Mario Party games are that they are all worth a play from time to time)

As for Mario Tennis Aces, again it's the best Mario Tennis game to play locally with friends. I have not gone back to Mario Power Tennis or Mario Tennis (64) since. Likewise with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and I have no doubt the same will go for Smash Ultimate. Nintendo is really hitting it out of the park at giving us the best local player experiences. With Mario Party the above is impossible to achieve due to all the games being different and worth a play without out-doing each other, but this one I feel will at least keep me on the Switch version for a long while.

Didn't know embargo was up in 30 minutes. Deal breaker if I buy or not :p

That's fair enough, but then when I mention how Party/Puzzle/Rhythm games are usually capped at 8 rather than 10, people often say it's just a review score, who cares? Just keep in mind that these genres are not often judged on their own merits. Most reviewers don't realise that if they give a party game a higher score than Breath of the Wild, it doesn't mean it's a better "game". Different genres can't be compared head to head like that. It just means it does what it's meant to do in a better way. That's how I see it anyway. I recommend you watch gameplay videos and judge for yourself.

The 2 vs 2 mode is really interesting. It is deeper that I initially thought since you can recruit partners and have a dedicated board.

This is something I have been trying to say to people a lot. A high mark doesn't mean it is better cross genre, But good in its own way.

I think this will be one that's under the tree for my stepson! (And all of us, really, but his name will be on the tag)

I want it now but Christmas is coming and I know I'm outright buying RDR2 on release day, so Mario Party will have to wait as a gift!

Same goes the other way around. SMP could land at the 70s on metacritic, it still has a great chance of being an amazing party game. Generally, anything that has local multiplayer is a lot less reliant on being a good game, since you are largely having fun with your friends, not with the game.

IMO this is why some arguably terrible games like DayZ were so popular, or even Destiny. There are tons of coop oriented games that are plain boring alone.

No hype? I thought this is one of the most hyped Mario Party games ever. Way more talks about it than any other Mario Party in the past.

I'm ready. Traditional Mario Party is back.
My 2 big complaints were have to buy an extra set of joycons and no online board multiplayer. Hopefully Nintendo patches in online board later.

Some stuff I've been hearing like only 4 boards (all of which are kinda small too) and stars costing 10 coins have me slightly worried. I was hoping this would be more of a return to form as I loved MP1-7. But I'll see what reviewers say.

I'm hyped unless these reviews suck. Trying to finish Octopath Traveler so I can sell that and get this.

No fucks given about review scores. They rarely are ever able to identify a good MP game or any party game for that matter.

Hype is already there because I'll be playing it with family locally often enough to get my money's worth

Mario Party 10 managed to sell over 2 million units on Wii U so I reckon Super Mario Party will do a decent amount regardless of the outcome

None of my friends want to on their free time instead of hang with their boy/girl freinds, travel a few cities over to where I moved to and play Mario party.

I have been thinking to organize a Mario Party evening in my flat these coming weeks, or propose it for Christmas with the family as it should be easy to pick up and take part for all age groups. Might get the new Mario Party soon, it seems to be the best entry in the series since forever.

The audience who buys Mario party the most generally isnt on this forum. Heck MP 10 which was maligned on Neo gaf still sold a million plus on the wii u of all things

I've seen nothing of the gameplay that is impressive enough to even consider buying this. At the end of the day, I'd have a much easier and better time getting a group together to play an older Mario Party. If the new game hasn't evolved much then the nostalgia value of the older titles will probably make for a more enjoyable experience for my friend circle. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

Finally embargo is up. For everyone wondering I reviewed in Dutch so a few exerpts: Yeah 4 boards but had a lot of fun the last two weeks because of all the different options. No handheld is completely logical seeing the kind of games. The boards are smaller but so are the ammount of steps you can make, you can even throw a 0. I rated it fairly highly with a 8.6

Good scores so far. Nintendo should get docked for no online board mode. Still getting it for local multiplayer though.

It will cost me only 20 bucks (splitting with friends) so it's not much of a risk. Everything is fun with friends and a couple of beers anyway.

The game looks great.
The minigames look cool (look for slaparazzi).
Is classic board again.
It has the classic 4- player competitive mode, but it also has 4-player cooperative mode and 2 vs 2 team boards.
Each character has a different dice with different properties.
Again... is the return of classic Mario Party!!!!

In the downside:
Really poor online mode, you can only play minigames.
No handheld mode.. although there are minigames that makes you turn the joycon in all angles or shake it a lot, so it makes sense.
It seems not all minigames are available in all modes: I hadn't seen rythm or cooperative minigames on competitive boards.

This is the game that's really making me think about buying a Switch.

it's the ultimate party game... one of those you don't see much hype online yet quietly sells millions anyway... pre-orders are very strong as far as MP game goes.

Tbh no I totally get why they don't add it.
I don't think it hurts the game at all to add it in later. Ragequitters suck but many folks just want to play with their childhood friends who moved to other parts of the world.

Let the cpu replace quitters and give disconnect players a way to rejoin the board. Unless we're talking about lag.

Reviewers are well aware of that. Fans on the hand, less so.
