Cubs would have been the other NLDS team as the sole wild card team prior to the addition of the second wild card. This is more fun though.
And more unfair. That's what I'm saying: Cubs should be in the Division Series already. Colorado has like 5 won games less and could go through with one good game over Cubs. I do agree this is more exciting but it's not fair. The already long as shit season is given less importance to its individual games with this.

A month long playoff after 162 games of regular season is inherently unfair.

Under the old system the Cubs 11-8 record against the Brewers would have given them the division.

Such is life.

Eh, everyone knows the score. You try to win your division. You don't try to be a wild card team.

Before the wild card game existed who would've been the other team in the NLDS? It would've been Cubs wouldn't it?

Yes Cubs would have advanced in the old model. They introduced the extra wild card play-in game as a way to have an extra playoff team (and fanbase), and an extra playoff game (and ratings) even if it's only for a day.

Before the wild card I believe there were only two divisions in each league so the two regular season winners would automatically advance to the LCS, there were no division series. The led to the 1993, SF Giants winning 103 games and missing the playoffs because they didn't win their division. In 1994 the league realigned to 3 divisions in each league, and introduced one wild card team in each league.

All the stats in the top left lean toward the Rockies. Players pinch hitting .390, Gonzales starting his postseason career 12-22. Cubs stats are 2nd-most games scoring 0 or 1, lowest postseason career batting avg for Heyward, no postseason walk-offs since 1945

Hell if we didn't introduce the new system a situation like 3 years ago where the NL Central had three teams at 98-100 wins and one of them wouldn't even make the playoffs. Instead the two teams that didn't win the division got to play in the WC round.

Cubs would have won their division in any other sport due to better head to head record in the regular season. Game 163 is a dumb relic.
I completely forgot about that too.

Either pick having game 163 while ignoring head to head records orbhave a wild card game. You can't have both.

While they're at it why not reduce the amount of games? 162 games in 6 months is ridiculous.

People whining about things being "unfair" with playoff baseball? Where you been since forever? Play better in the first 162 or 163 and you're not in this "unfair" position.

Yup. It's not a perfect system, but it likely never will be, but it's still a lot better (and more exciting) that what we've had in the past. Playoffs are like the best thing about Baseball. Expanding that to a reasonable extent is a good thing. And baseball is also very regional, so introducing extra playoff spots that could expand the audience to places like Colorado or Oakland, is a good thing for a sport that is so often northeast-centric

Yep, the WC game has been nothing but a net positive for the game and the league. The Rockies and DBacks have drawn much better crowds since the system was instituted because they have made the playoffs recently through the system. There is no way to make it perfect. Maybe you can make the WC round a best 2/3 but then the playoffs stretch into the middle of November and nobody wants that.

This is probably as good as the system can be.
