Every good superhero needs that one foe. The yin to their yang. X-Men have Magneto, Fantastic Four have Doctor Doom, Batman has Joker, Superman has Lex Luthor. However, in the case of Peter Parker, our Amazing Spider-Man, it seems like there is not really a consensus! Spider-Man is probably rivalled only by Batman in terms of iconic enemies: Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, Venom, Carnage, Dr. Octopus, Shocker, Kingpin, Electro, Mysterio, Vulture, Scorpion, Rhino, Sandman and more! However, amongst them there seem to be three who are generally considered to be at the top:

  1. Norman Osborn (Green Goblin) - The businessman with extreme intelligence and strength, but at the cost of his sanity! He has been a central figure of many Spider-Man stories, including some of the most tragic ones.

  2. Doctor Otto Octavius (Doctor Octopus) - Well, the name kind of gives a hint of what he is! A doctor of extreme intelligence, but one with 8 limbs! He is considered to be a foil to Spider-Man, a scientific genius who is capable of just as much as Peter Parker himself, yet he is also one who decided to take a different path in life (well, if you read his debut comic perhaps it's not so much of a decision rather than an accident that hinders his capability for morality!)

  3. Eddie Brock (Venom) - The embodiment of hatred for Spider-Man, both the symbiote itself and Brock have a disdain for the wallcrawler as a result of his actions in the past. Having been a prior host, Peter himself inadvertently creates a foe that can do whatever he can do! He is immune to Parker's spider senses!

So, ComicERA, who do you think takes the cake?

doc oc is a major foe, and venom has a special hatred based relationship with Spidey. But Osborne is his Nemesis.

There's a pretty good argument for Ock, but it's Norman ultimately.

There is no "consider". It's Osborn. It's always been Osborn.

Ock might hate it, but he's second.

Venom's a great foil for him, but Peter's got too much personal shit mixed in with Goblin.

Goblin #1 but Otto a close second.

I couldn't imagine Superior Spider-Man with Norman as Spidey.

Venom dips in an out of being a shaky ally too often to be his arch nemesis. It would be like having The Joker be part of the Bat family 3 years out of every 10.

Doc Oc is always who I think of first... but I don't see why any of those couldn't be legitimate options. Spiderman doesn't really jump out at me as only having OTP when it comes to villians.

Norman.

He represents something fundamental that a lot of people think growing up. "Why does my friend's dad hate me?"

Norman, though I'll say Venom during the impressive amount of time they actually kept Norman dead.

Feel like Ock's rep as a foil and nemesis has been bolstered by the movie (and now the PS4 game) more than in the comics. Though with Superior + the multimedia stuff, maybe he deserves the crown for currently. Not sure what Norman's been up to, and Venom's popularity means they'll always be trying to do antihero stuff with him so he's no longer in the competition.

Mephisto should be on the list. He had a bigger victory over Peter than anyone else. Even bigger than the guy who slept with his girlfriend and later murdered her.

Goblin ok, but he didn't impress me until Dark Reign, now if he put that kinda of focus on Peter, then I would be a lot more enamored.

It's the Green Goblin, although I think it should be Doctor Octopus since that would be more in keeping with the weird creature theme (and the Green Goblin is just so goofy).

Tie between Goblin and Octopus. Goblin killed his girlfriend by proxy (Peter did it), but Octavius killed him, stole his body, pretended to be him, and then cloned him and occupied that body when he was forced to download Pete's consciousness back into the stolen body -- lol comics are weird -- so he's done his fair share of shit, too.

Eh, Goblin did so much more.

I mean, unless the story isn't canon anymore didn't Osborn have an affair/sex with Gwen, and she got pregnant, and when the kids grew up (rapidly because goblin formula or some shit) he sent them to kill Spider-Man?

That's pretty fucking bad lmao, especially when you include killing the love of his life (like you mentioned).

Definitely Norman. I'd say Doc Ock is the runner up. I don't even think Eddie is in the running. I like Venom and he is memorable but Eddie has been in the anti-hero category for a long time.
