Oh right, forgot about 8bitdo. Yeah, honestly, might as well just get one of their controllers if you want to use it on retro-inspired games like Shovel Knight or Messenger on top of NES games.

I think what kills me is that they sold the NES Classic controllers for $10, but remove the wire and add a 2nd controller & now the cost is $50 more. I'm sure there's other reasons, but I remember during the direct, my reaction went from "oh cool!" to "LOL NOPE" after seeing the price.

Really, I just hope we get some stuff that hasn't been re-released a ton of times via VC or NES Classic. Pro Wrestling is one of them, but...not exactly one people were really asking for.

trade: my yakuza kiwami for bomberman R. thoughts?

i love bomberman and been holding out for sale at less than $20

So I assume Overcooked isn't worth getting even on sale because Overcooked 2 is so much better? I haven't got any local friends so it would just be for single player since the first game doesn't have online.

def not recommended for solo play. 2 is still goood, not better tho

Took a quick clip of Inversus on Switch:

I'm kicking myself for not picking this up sooner!

I was able to play 2 games online vs someone and it's a game of chess. Do I make a path for myself to get closer to them? Do I charge a shot just to scare them? Can I trap them and try to predict their next move?

Great recommendation, guys!

Okay, going to do my first "major" blind purchase on the eShop with Valthirian Arc. Will report back later.

Oh shit, so you're focusing a lot on the quick shot? What was your end score on that level? Crazy how each level design brings almost a different mechanic to the gameplay.

I saw some interesting back and forth between the...lone...developer, and a super fan a year or so ago upon release. The game didn't hook me then, but I genuinely was taken aback with how this fan could touch on the sensibilities to the developer himself! I swear that super fan wasn't Epilexia ...!

Edit: Found it!

Actually it was Ryan Juckett's insightful comments himself, that pushed me to pick the game up at release. Problem for me was at the time, I didn't have anyone motivate me via leaderboards. A game like this, where you "personally" know a person, makes all the difference for me. And most of my offline friends either aren't that gung-ho about gaming, or as skilled as folks like Hispanicguy and Epilexia and others on this board! OrakioRob, Arturo, HotHamBoy and Dash Kappei, I think you guys would dig this high score chase too!

Everybody here jump in! :)

Feel free to add me SW-5115-1729-4603 and say hello if ya do!

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one interested in Warriors Orochi 4. Are you going to get the standard or "deluxe" edition? I'm leaning towards deluxe.

It's a bit dismaying how many typos there are on the eShop page. I guess that's the fault of the responsible person at Koei Tecmo America.

I'm preordering the standard version. Want to see what the seasonpass will actually bring after seeing what they did with DW9 and Atelier L&S. I'm abit worried about the framerate but if its anything like WO3 on the Switch, it should be totally fine.

My end score was 856,605. Those damn enemies that take 2 shots to kill really mess with your flow. Unless I'm missing something, you get plenty of quick shot powerups on the floor to constantly use it.

Epilexia I need to be careful with your game recommendations, haha.

It's easy... explode them by create a chain with the enemies around them. Then, they will die in a single hit :)

Once the enemies shooting lasers spawn in the first level, the class (they can shoot a single laser, they can use the charge beam, they can have a barrier) will depend on your score and performance.

And the powerups serve to quickly charge your weapon, BUT once the screen get filled with enemies, they will try to "eat" your play area. And if they conquest a square, the powerup will disappear.

In the first arena, don't worry too much about your combo. Even if you fail a shoot, in the middle part, once things gets INTENSE, you can skyrocket your score.

Once the screen is FILLED with enemies, the strategy is to destroy a sector with a chain explosion, then quickly take the poweups to refill your weapon BEFORE they are eaten up, and then, to move in the opposite direction to avoid to be "eaten", shooting to open a new space with a chained explosion.

In this part, it's very easy to obtain massive amounts of points, if you learn the dynamic to survive.

Even more, in one of these "invasions", it's very easy to completely refill your extra lives in a few seconds, earning an extra life with each explosion. The game starts slows, but gets CRAZY.

Other tip derived from all this: never get the power ups if you don't need to refill your weapon, they're basic to survive because in the more stressful parts, your shoot will not recharge fast enough. And try to use the charge shoot every time that you can, in this way, you will open new spaces around the conquered space, by shooting 3 extra powerful lasers instead of one.

Taking into account your super-abilities playing twin sticks, in a couple of days, I can see you perfectly destroying my high score and entering in the global TOP 10 in the first arena :)

I'm curious about Party Crashers, as a couch play game. It's from the same developers as Party Golf (with the same insane amount of modes, options, etc). The few reviews that have appeared on Steam are all very favorable.

Anyone has any tips for wrapping my head around Binding of Isaac?
To know what's going on you have to know the structure of BoI dungeons.

Each regular floor has at least one golden room, a shop and a boss room. "Golden rooms" give you an item just for entering it. Shop gives you resources and items for money. Boss rooms give you items after you kill boss. There are many other types of rooms: sacrifice rooms, arcade rooms, bedroom, dice rooms, error rooms, devil rooms, angel rooms and each of them have different interactions.

Golden room has the widest available pool of items it can give to you, which means that generally they are not as good. Shop pool mostly has active items and items that relate to money which makes these items even more situational than golden room items. So use your judgement when deciding if it's even worth going into shop when you are constrained with keys. It's not worth going into shop period when you have no money to buy anything.

Keys -- are generally the most valuable resource, because they open golden rooms, shops and golden chests. It's a good practice to save 2 keys for each floor's golden room and (maybe) a shop.

The secret to successful Isaac run is picking the right items. Items that give you damage or increase your "tears" are generally always good for obv. reasons.

Note that just like in many roguelikes you are NOT bound to take ALL items. If item is bad, doesn't fit your current build or is hard to engage in your current situation -- just don't take it. The power to say "no" is the most important power of them all.

Items can be passive and active. Passive item stay with you and stack with each other, each changing your stats and even Isaac's appearance.

Active items must be held in your hand, which means you can only carry one at a time. Pick and choose which active items you want to keep on you and which ones are fine to use once and then replace for a better active item. Active items are charged by completing room and by batteries.

You can look at Platinum God page to see which items does what. You can search either by item's name, or by it's visuals (sorting by colour in options helps with that).

I agree that the base shooting is quite frustrating and feels weak, but I'm pressing on for now.
You have more tools than just tears. You can put bombs on the ground (one bomb kills any regular, 2-3 -- will kill most bosses). You can push about to be exploded bomb either with your body or even with your tears.

You can use cards to kill enemies: "Death" card doll out damage to all enemies in the room, "High Priestess" summons Mom's leg that will stomp and kill any singular enemy , including bosses (note that if Leg doesn't find an enemy it will stomp on YOU).

I get cursed randomly, one run I started teleporting to different rooms when I got hit, generally some advice would be good!
That curse is actually good sometimes, because by abusing it you can get into otherwise locked rooms without using keys.

Also has all the DLC content been integrated into the main game already?
Switch version has most of the DLC content barring last PC patches (which are coming soon-ish).

The way how Switch version paces DLC unlocks however is superior for new players because newer and harder dungeons are only unlocked mid-game as opposed right away like in PC version.

Hmm. Dumb question... So do the dot power ups allow you to quick fire, immediately? I went back into the tutorial, and am not sure I reread that part yet....

Do you often use the single shots or more charge? I've been focusing on charge, and I wonder if results will better via single shot.

You have a limited amount of shoots. Each circle is a bullet. And these circles are refilled if you don't shoot, and you are not charging your weapon.

They are very important for three reasons: if you do charge shoots, while you have your laser beam ready, waiting for a chain of enemies to be in line, your circles will not be refilled, so the way to go is to refill your weapons with the powerups.

In the part showed by Hispanicguy in his video, in these stressful parts full of enemies, you need to rely in quick shoots, because you will not have enough time to charge the weapon. He is very smart, so he is in the border of the screen, but in some arenas with a circular design this strategy is not valid, and you need to rely in the center part of the arena. In these parts, you really need the powerups, or the enemies will spawn faster than your weapon.

Also, I think that when you have ALL THE CIRCLES in your weapon, the next shoot will double its power, so it can destroy the enemies with the barriers in a single hit. But I'm not completely sure about this, in the part in which these bastards start to appear, things are so fucking intense.

Until I learned how to play, I was really terrible: thinking that these circles were extra points, I always tried to get all of them, fucking up my runs :)

oOo: Ascension for Nintendo Switch | 6 Minutes of Gameplay -- basically you have to make your way through stages that are setup like mazes. Can get pretty challenging but stages also have a fast way to completing them. If you boost, you can jump over ledges and avoid certain obstacles.

Have they included an option to turn off the ghost in the levels? In the review of XBLAFans, this was the major complaint with the Xbox One version. Once you complete a level, a ghost will appear doing your last run. And this added to your normal character, resulted in confusing parts with both characters, the transparent ship and the main ship in the screen.

I'm not a great fan of ghosts appearing in the runs, I find them distracting.

And thanks for the amazing footage!

This is awesome, I love these games! I might repurchase them on Switch if they are implemented well.

If you've never played these gsmes you absolutely should!

I'm up for Hot Springs Story, but really hoping they add in something extra. I tended to find that you got two plays out of the game before you exhaust it. Never a complaint though. Much preferred these to the free games on iOS.

Bought Miles & Kilo with a discount price and had to come here to give my praises. This game is absolutely great for its price! It is a very simple game with some repetition but the controls are perfect. I can't believe how precise those are. You can control your jump distance with absolute accuracy. Graphics are simple but I really like the colors and the style is very good 8-bit style. Clean and simple. Music is another surprise to me. This game has a very good soundtrack. If you like platforming at all buy this gem!

Edit: have to add that the HD rumble is good with this game. And the game is kinda like Celeste in a sense that it doesn't feel too frustrating because you can instantly try again with the endless lives. Only at the beginning of the course but these levels can be played in about 30 to 60 seconds.

I never use my Switch for multi-player and finally get how the d-pad is such hot trash since trying to play NES games on there. Are there are any good, reasonable, options for d-pad swaps on the Joycons?
I use one of these, it replaces the L joycon. It only works in portable mode due to lack of battery, motion controls etc, but it's reflected in the price. Definitely made it much better playing 2D games on the commute for me.

Here's a d-pad swap shell for the L-Joycon: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Myr...-for-joy-con-shell-only-left/32843077470.html

Just be careful with the screws and which one goes where, after replacing both controllers I can certainly say that the R-Joycon was much more of a pain in the ass for me than the L one.

Have you tried playing Gradius with it? It's near impossible. There are times when I want to move my ship down and to the right, but I end up going to the left 0_0

Yeah it is a good game, I sang the praises when it came out and kept bringing it up for people to give it a shot. I believe Epilexia liked it too. It really is a good platformer in the vein of adventure island.

Have you played Victor Vran? If so, which would you say is better, Diablo 3 or Victor Vran?

I haven't.

There is one thing that Diablo 3 does really well in the genre and that is the impact of your skills. Killed enemies are propelled across the screen, break into shards, disintegrate etc. depending on your powers. It makes up for the lack of really satisfying death animations and sounds that Diablo 2 had.

I'm kind of done with the genre though. Torchlight (1+2) and Grim Dawn bore me to tears to the extent that I just fall asleep while playing them... in co-op! The only games that I still found to be mildly entertaining are Path of Exile and Diablo 3. I'm kind of done with the whole loop in these games. Games (also meta stuff like achievements) that revolve around carrot chasing stopped being interesting to me.

That curse is actually good sometimes, because by abusing it you can get into otherwise locked rooms without using keys.

Switch version has most of the DLC content barring last PC patches (which are coming soon-ish).

The way how Switch version paces DLC unlocks however is superior for new players because newer and harder dungeons are only unlocked mid-game as opposed right away like in PC version.

Good information. Thanks. My plan is to play for a bit blind before looking up what items do. But there's already been some I don't understand what they did even after I picked it up or used it. There's also these rooms that are empty except for spikes in the middle that confuse me... But that seems part of the fun. For now.

Between BoI and Steredenn I've neglected my other recent purchases. And life responsibilities...

This week's ACA Neo Geo game is gonna be Zupapa. An arcade only platform game by SNK themselves (2001) in the style of Bubble Bobble and Mario Bros. One of the bosses in the game is Senryo Kyoshiro from the Samurai Shodown games.

Got to be one of the rarest Neo Geo games.

Finished Broken Sword 5 yesterday. Another okay point-and-click on the system. It's a bit uneven in terms of puzzles and story. The first half is relatively boring as it takes too long to get going and has you revisit some uninteresting scenes a couple of times. I didn't really care for the main plot points, but the second half of the game has some interesting locales/scenes. I think they should have toned down the references to past games as I feel it doesn't really suit the game. It tries to balance a serious story with humour, but I think this is to the detriment of the central mystery as it's too cheesy at times or has characters quip about murders that just happened in front of their eyes. Can't really remember how the first two games were in that regard.

Puzzles are often doable, but there is some pretty hard stuff in there and there were also two times that I was sure I did the thing that I was meant to do, but it didn't work. Not sure what went wrong there. On average, the puzzles are fun to figure out and there is some clever stuff in there that requires a bit more effort to solve.

Ah, another think I don't really like is how slow everything is. I prefer adventures that let you zip around and between screens. Touch controls were also a pain in the ass, so I switched to stick controls. It looks great on the Switch screen, however.

I can't get enough of throwbacks to that infamous Gabriel Knight 3 puzzle though! (Darkside Detective had a great one as well)

Overall, it's a decent adventure game. There are better options on the system, but if you are hungry for more, Broken Sword 5 offers a sizeable game with some good puzzling and an okay plot to move everything along. Just don't expect anything truly memorable.

Reaching the end of My Brother Rabbit and A Case of Distrust is next on my adventure list.

Hey, this looks cool! I think I should get this...

Well, now I have to get this ^_^

It's a bit pricey for me right now, but I'm downloading the demo and will probably grab it when it's on sale.

Oh, Rumbow is so much fun... I got it on the Wii U and even though I only played alone, I had a blast with it. The game is challenging, fun to play and also very funny.

Yeah, I meant to say, it's somewhat frequently on sale for $7.50. The demo will definitely give you an idea of gameplay, but not friend leaderboards I'd assume.

Man, now. I need to go back to Runbow... I waited for it on Switch, and put it down pretty quickly due to not playing a lot of local MP. (I knew it was MP going in.) .Still wanted to support the release!

Neat! Never even heard of this one, and I thought I was pretty well-versed with the platform. Looks like fun too. :)

Which would you recommend, Primate Ryan?
I've only played Goetia so far, and if the game offers a pretty interesting setting, an intriguing scenario, some of the later puzzles are downright insane and impossible to solve without a FAQ...

https://www.resetera.com/threads/nintendo-eshop-september-2018.65695/page-25#post-12761139

I don't really mind that Goetia gets really hard towards the end (also a bit too hard for me, needed a FAQ for a couple of puzzles as well). For me, the game was more about the puzzles than the story and I really like it if games don't care if you get stuck, especially puzzle games. If I run into a wall, so be it. I'm just not smart enough, but at least I was challenged! (provided that the puzzles aren't just badly designed)

I don't play games to finish them most of the time. That's not what's really important to me.

Goetia is probably the hardest adventure on the eShop though. I heard the Wardrobe has some really oldschool difficulty, but I didn't really like that one for several reasons, so I never got far. It's actually one of only a few adventures on the Switch that I didn't see through to the end.

There is no option to remove the ghost -- I don't think there is even an options menu in the game. It can be distracting if you fail a stage towards the goal, but I seldom noticed the ghost on screen. Oddly enough, I noticed it a lot more when rewatching the gameplay footage than actually playing. That said, I can see why it would bother some and hopefully the option to remove the ghost ship is added. I imagine it is present to allow the player to see their path of progression and to aid them in finding ways to improve upon their stage completion time.

Holy shit....just had the craziest run in Steredenn. Picked it up last week due to more recommendations from this thread and it was on sale.

y7fev.jpg

This run was around 40 minutes long.

I had 2 bots equipped: Ninjabot and Demuxbot. They destroyed everything in sight. Had some upgrades for them, too.

You can place around 4 or 5 Ninjabots on the field and 3 or 4 Demuxbots. Maybe even more? Not sure. Not only do they auto aim towards enemies (at least the Ninjabot does) but they can block an enemy bullet, potentially saving you. Ninjabots recharge so quick you can throw up another one when one dies.

In terms of bosses, you can sometimes go behind them, place bots, and just dodge the rest of the fight. It's going to be hard for me to play with any other weapon after being spoiled by bots, lol.

This 40 min run included "finishing" the game once. I love that it loops.

Took a clip so you can see the bots in action:

Another fantastic game which I highly recommend.
