Rotten Tomatoes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/venom_2018/
Venom's first standalone movie turns out to be like the comics character in all the wrong ways - chaotic, noisy, and in desperate need of a stronger attachment to Spider-Man (currently 26%)

Metacritic: https://www.metacritic.com/movie/venom-2018
In "Venom," the spectacular but mostly derivative and generically plotted new comic-book origin story (it's the first installment of the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters), Tom Hardy is afflicted with an otherworldly force that invades his mind, his body, his very being. It's called the desire to act like a stumblebum Method goof. The symptoms, which are highly visible and dramatic, range from a propensity for bug-eyed staring to a tendency to swallow each line with a kind of renegade doofus mumble, in a way that leaves Hardy sounding like a cross between early Marlon Brando and late Adam Sandler.

A movie that initially seemed just-plain-bad becomes so-bad-it's-good. Or maybe it's just plain good. It's been a full day since I've seen it, and honestly, I'm still not sure. Either way, I laughed a lot.

The pervasive lack imagination of this film under the auspices of director Ruben Fleischer, in his first feature outing since the dreadful Gangster Squad in 2013, makes one appreciate the thought and care that Marvel has lavished not only on the likes of Black Panther and Captain America but even on more minor-league entries such as the amusing Ant-Man titles. Everything here seems by-the-book, without amusement or surprise, save for Stan Lee's more extensive-than-usual last-minute cameo.

The film is utterly dissonant, recalling the weird camp of Batman & Robin, which illustrates a fundamental conflict between the presentation of what the Venom symbiote is and does and the filmmakers' efforts to turn his story into a Deadpool-esque laugh riot.

Gamespot's Review - This Could Have Been Avoided
Venom has all the ingredients of a decent superhero movie--10 or 15 years ago. With spotty CGI, poorly drawn characters, tonal inconsistency including forced "edginess" and awkward humor, sidelined female characters, and even cringeworthy licensed musical cues, it feels like a relic from the distant, pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe past. That may in part be attributed to the fact that it's been in production in one form or another since at least 2008. But its problems go way past simply being "old school," and ultimately, Venom lacks the charm, clarity, and ambition superhero fans have come to expect.

IGN's Review - A turd in the wind.
Tom Hardy's committed performance can't overcome a painful script and indecisive direction, resulting in a film with a personality that's as split as its titular character. There are occasional moments of brilliance in the dynamic between Eddie and Venom that give a hint of what the film could have been in steadier hands, but ultimately, that only makes the finished product a more frustrating viewing experience.
Score: 4.0

EDIT: Ah OP added it in before I could finish posting lol.

Sony what are you doing, especially with all the good news about your recently released Marvel video game.

So Sony fucked up another one. How long before they cut another deal with Marvel to take over the character?

EW - should come with an antidote
Venom isn't quite bad, but it's not exactly good either. It's noncommittally mediocre and, as a result, forgettable. It just sort of sits there, beating you numb, unsure of whether it wants to be a comic-book movie or put the whole idea of comic-book movies in its crosshairs. It never rises above bombastic and busy — which is something I never thought I'd say about a movie starring three aces like Hardy, Ahmed, and Williams. Visually, which is the only thing really going for it, Venom has a stylishly gloomy Nolan-does-Gotham vibe. But Venom, the character, never comes into focus until the last five minutes, when it finally, at long last, starts to get interesting. Until then, he's just another bit of secondary Marvel IP who scowls and growls, and never shows us why he should be headlining his own movie.

Tom Hardy's performance is must see for me, lol. This movie will be utter trash but perfect for A-List. Going in IMAX 2D for the complete shitshow

"It's the first installment of the Sony Universe of Marvel characters."

No it isn't. But I sure as hell hope it's the last.

I asked a few weeks ago whether Venom or Dark Phoenix would get a higher MC and RT, and people seemed pretty sure Venom would be better

I'm not so sure

Sheesh not surprised in the slightest. Hopefully Into the Spider-Verse manages to be much better.

Eddie Brock in film can't catch a break. And I was actually cautiously optimistic with the material they had.
