No USB-C is wow.

Apple is potentially ditching Intel on certain Macs, most likely low-power MacBooks. Absolutely nothing is certain.

They aren't going split the hardware base into two for long. They will make the A series the ONLY Apple CPUs very quickly.

This has been the goal from the beginning. They didn't invest billions into making their own ARM CPUs for any other reason. Intel's Core CPU line hasn't matched Apple's design goals in a long long time. Apple wants THIN and LIGHT with long battery life. Intel Core CPUs achieve their performance via clockspeed and wattage. Look at the Macbook Pro 15 i9 debacle. The i9 is entirely mismatched for that chassis. The Intel - Apple relationship has been doomed for a while now.

A12 Bionic sports something like over 7 billion transistors when Intel i9 8950HK Hexacore in top of the line laptops are less than 5 billion. You don't fucking need 7 billion transistors for a phone/tablet only SoC. They been making the A series the most dense consumer SoC for a while for the reason that they want it to replace all other processors for all their consumer products.

Man, if I could get Sketch and/or Framer X for Windows, I'd be all over that Studio 2. At least Framer is coming to Windows (eventually). I might have to give Figma another look.

I have a Surface Laptop and quite like it. I'll probably update to the version after this one

None of that is confirmed, but if they did, why would that lead to you buying the same programs over again? They aren't going to completely rewrite the OS with 0 backwards compatibility.
There will be a software solution to run X86 apps. Microsoft already allows this on Windows 10 for arm

This isn't the thread for it, so let's wrap it up, but...

Guaranteed they're gonna dip their toe in the water before plunging in with any "Pro" line, though.

How did the BC work out with the G5 to Intel Core transition eh? Exactly.
The G5 was a gigantic mess for everyone involved.

well Microsoft said the 8th gen quad chips make it '67% faster' but I expect it to be more like 15-20% faster

From my recollection of the 7th-8th gen transition generally, it will be closer to the former figure for bursts, but the speed increase for sustained workloads is naturally much lower as thermal and power limits kick in. It is a nice boost though.

I'm ready for the SP6 whenever they announce UK dates and prices for different specs. My trusty 4GB SP4 has been used every day for years and I've been really happy with it.

Are the keyboards the same as SP5?

I kinds prefer the simplicity of just using the Surface Laptop upside down to draw over convertibles and detachables these days. Just flip the thing upside down, let the accelerometer flip the display for you if your device has one (or just do it manually in the settings), and then draw. Seems somehow less clunky...

I was kinda hoping MS would just get rid of 4GB RAM models this gen but I woke up to them using last gen CPU in a $5K all in one so...

I can't believe it's almost 2019 and premium computing products still have 4GB RAM models... Even their $200 gaming consoles have 8GB now!

EDIT: HOLD A TIC. I was lied to. SP6 is 8 or 16GB only! Nice!!! I guess they were talking about Surface Go's 4GB version...

Not gonna lie, wasn't there to see it, but I can imagine a manufacturer doing that in modern day, it would be suicide.
They have a relatively tight leash on devs' habits through Xcode, and most of the core macOS APIs already exist on ARM through iOS. Most software written in recent years would theoretically just need a recompile to ARM, which is why they've been pushing everyone so hard to 64-bit. (That would keep the code maintained.) The main paint points would be games, and Adobe. But Adobe being a pain is nothing new.

But again, as interesting as it is to talk about architecture migrations, this isn't the thread.

Yep. Sorry for that distraction. Now let's celebrate the fact that there seems to be no 4GB model for SP6!

EDIT: Fucking hell.... I think that preorder page is just fucking with me. They don't have 4GB option but the cheapest 8GB option is like over $1100...

EDIT 2: NEVERMIND! The Gray color let's you go 8GB and 128GB SSD for $899!

Man I want one of those surface laptops but the price always hurts, specially in CAD

Think I'm gonna wait until Surface Book gets USB-C to upgrade, but man, the Studio really is something I dream about owning if I end up making a lot more money.

I don't understand why they didn't switch to USB-C to power these laptops? I'll pass, my 2013 Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro is still going strong and since I don't play games on it, there is like 0 reason to upgrade which is kind of sad for laptop technology.

However, what's really annoying to me are laptop manufacturer's who switch completely to USB-C so they can save 0.001 mm of space or something. Every device I own to plug into a laptop is USB-A other than my cell phone, which I would never plug into a laptop anyway.. The best thing IMO is to have an USB-C power cable that can also be used to output video and then have a 2nd USB-A port for compatibility purposes to use with external hard drives, flash drives, mice/mice receivers that are all USB-A.

128gb surface laptop 2 is 999 but 256gb same specs it's 1299 lmao Microsoft. That extra 128gb must be pretty expensive for them.

Two things that are annoying me already:

- Lack of USB-C across all the new products.
- 7th gen Intel chips on the Studio 2. Seriously Microsoft?

I'll probably wait until next year to pick up a new Surface Pro, since the 2019 version is reportedly going to be a major design overhaul.

15 hour battery life on the headphones are pretty shit, and i don't ever use corona it's a waste of battery space. I wonder why microsoft got in to the 350 dollar NC headphone market.

Just want to give my two cents that I'll never purchase any new Surfaces again after my 4 crapped out in various ways. Also their Surface line isn't digital artist friendly no matter what they say.
The Arc Mouse is amazing though.

*fixes face*

That makes the exclusion on the Laptop at least even weirder. I guess they're going to start at the top of the range and slooooooowly move their way down?

I'm not saying it's ok, but we knew this going in.

Surface Laptop and Pro were just gonna be chipset bumps. That's all.

Next year is supposed to be a redesign.

They'll add thunderbolt when the new Intel chips that have more PCIE lanes ship, which will be either late next year or early 2020, I imagine.
