I learned to jaywalk when I moved to Washington DC. Random people on the street literally made fun of me for not jaywalking.

EDIT: by jaywalking I mean weaving through oncoming traffic as a pedestrian in the most dangerous way possible.

Saw a dude on a bicycle getting hit a few weeks ago (not exactly jaywalking but he went through a red light).

Feel fucking sorry for the guy who hit him with his car. I think the person who got hit was alright, but the driver gonna have that following him for a while I bet.

Don't run through red lights people.
Well everyone knows bicycles are a nuisance.

Its not a crime in my country. People can cross the road whenever they want. If there is no cars coming, then walk. I was surprised to learn it was an actual crime in the US.

Because people got places to be and are lazy or impatient and plus the road looked safe especially when there's no traffic light

Also people don't seem to really care even in Singapore

If it's clear I'm walking

I won't make cars wait though if they have the green light that's a dick move

Does Singapore have a statute against pedestrians walking on a public highway without specific permission? Because that seems to be what you're implying.

Gosh, whoever imagined a time would come when people would feel free to walk?

If you find yourself in the presence of other people who, like you, need to get from A to B, please don't react to them as interlopers just because they aren't clothed in metal boxes.

They really aren't "daring" you, they're just trying to move around like we always have. We were here long before that metal box on wheels.

Believe or not, pedestrians don't have right of way on busy roads. They might act like they do, but they don't. These people don't need to get from a to b, they're deliberately not using designated crossings. If I'm driving , I don't want to have to stop for some idiot who thinks they can just walk out into the road.

My dad struck and killed a jaywalker about 25 years ago. It wasn't his fault since the guy bolted into a rainy, dark road late at night. My dad tried to help him but the impact was too much. I think the man was on drugs or drunk at the time.

Almost saw a guy yesterday get hit dead on for jaywalking. He was crossing the street looking down holding two grocery bags. He didn't notice the incoming traffic to his right and almost stepped in the lane before he noticed the car and jumped back.

Jaywalkers have come incredibly close to my car while I'm going the speed limit. It's really dangerous. They shouldn't be so trustful that drivers are aware of their presence.

I started jaywalking in college when I was waiting for the light with some friends and this guy came up to us and yelled "You're just waiting for the white man to tell you to walk!"

Really opened my eyes. For some reason I always thought the walk sign was green.

I used to be pretty diligent until I started actively walking as transportation and people would speed up when I gave them eye contact before crossing

Next time I'm jaywalking and I see that one person patiently waiting I'll remember they are actually having an internal meltdown over everyone trying to be "cool" by walking across the street when there's no traffic coming either way.

I jaywalk because where I need to be is right in between the two crosswalks and traffic is clear enough to where I can safely walk across this two lane street or jog across a six lane street well before cars even come close to approaching me on the front or back end.

There's a time and a place for jaywalking. Mid day when people are going to work, lunch or whatever? Maybe you should stick to a crosswalk. Off hours? Cross away.

Even at crosswalks with lights, it's often safe enough to cross well before the light tells you to cross. You just have to be situationally aware and look out for cars in the distance and not shit that's right in your vicinity. People get hit because they see that it's clear within 30 feet of them, conveniently forgetting that there's still a car 350 feet away moving at 50 miles per hour, and they're walking at 3 miles per hour.

I jaywalk because I'm okay with getting hit.

The worst is when people push the button when they could have just crossed then cross anyway before the light changes.

Jaywalking laws are horseshit and it takes me longer to get to a crosswalk and wait

Fuck car centric culture in cities.

As a person in control of a motor vehicle, I suggest you stop acting as if your irresponsible behaviour were anybody's problem but your own.

If the city I was in made a conscious effort to think something else than a car existed maybe I wouldn't be jaywalking.

Here in Honolulu, the downtown cops will ticket you for jaywalking while a homeless guy across the street is visibly doing drugs.

i mean sometimes you hit that dumb awkward time when you hit the cross signal button but like it's too late for the cross to come on but there's still a good 10 seconds where the lights aren't going to change

why would i not just look both ways and scoot across the street

Go to Germany, once I was there on vacation, and the light was red on 3 AM on a street with literally no cars, we all stood there, waiting for the light to go green, not a single car came through...but we waited...it was pure bliss.

Why would you do that? You seem to be claiming that your fellow pedestrians were daring you to be a fucking idiot.

If it's clear, I'm walking. Y'all are weird. You can deffo tell who lives in the Northeast because as others have said, you're the outlier, or clearly from the burbs, if you're not doing it. People got places to be.
