To avoid network congestion, once the total amount of data used exceeds 20GB over any 3 consecutive days, the speed is limited to max. 1Mbps temporarily until 12AM. Even when the speed is limited, it is still fast enough to watch Youtube.
So the ideal consumption of data per day should be 6.5gb so that every 3 consecutive days of consumption would avg. around 19.5gb/3 days, did I get that right or I missed something? lol
Thanks, seems I finally found my ideal service in terms of data allowance.
SonicX_Zero I think you should get a prepaid SIM.
I'm currently using b-mobile, they have 21 day sim loaded with 5 gb data, costs about 3200 yen. Saves you the hassle of carrying another device, and easier on your phone's battery since you'll be using mobile data instead of wifi. Good LTE network too.
Well uhhh I'm using the hell out of my plan and I still have 1gb with 4 days left. Wi-fi is in many cafes & restaurants, and obviously hotels so I save when possible!
Thanks for the suggestion definitely considering it during my next visit especially if I'm going solo, but for this trip data allowance is currently my priority since I'm going with a group and I need as much as allowance as I can get per day.SonicX_Zero I think you should get a prepaid SIM.

So yeaaaaah.Dear Customer,
Thank you very much for your inquiry to Japan Wireless.
No, our Premium router does not have any speed restriction by your data amount.
However, we very highly appreciate our customers' kind cooperation keeping your one day data
amount smaller than 3GB at most if possible.
This is because your router unit is for the share-use by people as a rental unit.
Too much data consuming may cause those data cap for speed restriction applied in our future contract
with the service provider.
In order to keep offering this unlimited service for our great customers, we truely appreciate your kind cooperation.
Of course, exceeding 3GB on the needed day/s is not a problem.
Let us thank you for all your generous understanding.
Best regards,
Japan Wireless Customer Services
Japan will introduce more foreigner-friendly bus services in the run-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics by implementing an alphanumeric system to simplify labeling of routes and stops, according to the transport ministry.
According to the draft guidelines, each bus route will be identified with up to three digits or a combination of up to four numbers and letters, the ministry said.
The information will be displayed on route maps and bus destination displays as well as at bus stops for local, airport and tourist bus services among others.
At present, bus operators mostly use Japanese characters combined with numbers, though some transport companies are beginning to use an alphanumeric system to help the increasing number of foreign visitors.
I think gonna have to unsubscribe to this thread now that I'm home, it's making me depressed :'(
Does anyone know a good website for pocket WiFi. I'm gong to Tokyo in November
East Japan Railway Co. said Sunday it will end all its train services in the Tokyo metropolitan area at 8 p.m. due to the approach of a powerful typhoon.
Central Japan Railway Co. , the operator of the Tokaido Shinkansen Line that connects Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, suspended the day's services on the line before 5 p.m.
Huge discounts are being offered for flights to and accommodation in Hokkaido to help revitalize the economy of the main northern island following a recent big earthquake.
The government on Sept. 28 set aside 15.3 billion yen ($135 million) from its budget to support rebuilding efforts on Hokkaido. Subsidies will be provided to travel agencies and hotel operators to allow them to offer tours at a discount.
Foreign tourists would receive a discount of 70 percent, but there will be an upper limit of 20,000 yen for each night's discount.
The discount will only be allowed for three nights for Japanese visitors, while foreign tourists will benefit for five nights.
The tours are expected to go on sale from Oct. 1 and extend until March 2019.
Under the JAL discount program, flights within Hokkaido will also be covered. A maximum discount of 84 percent will be implemented for flights between Tokyo's Haneda Airport and New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido. The cheapest ticket under the program would start from 6,400 yen. The program will run from Oct. 28 until March 30.
For foreign tourists, the cost of a ticket from Haneda to New Chitose will be discounted from 10,800 yen to 7,560 yen.
ANA's discount program will cover flights to and from Hokkaido from Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. Currently, early-reservation tickets between Haneda and New Chitose cost 9,200 yen, but that would be discounted to 9,000 yen.
The discount program will run from Nov. 6 until March 30.
For foreign tourists, the cheapest seats for flights between Haneda and New Chitose will fall from 10,600 yen to 5,400 yen.
Japan's ancient city of Kyoto, a popular tourist destination, began levying taxes Monday on visitors staying at hotels, traditional inns and private lodgings to ease problems such as congestion and improve tourism services.
Guests will be taxed between 200 yen ($1.76) and 1,000 yen per night depending on the accommodation charge. The city expects to raise 4.56 billion yen annually through the tax and use the revenue for tourism promotion measures.
Oooooh man - leaving in 19 days!
For our cell phones, we plan to just use our international plan on AT&T. $10/day for our normal cell plan. It's not CHEAP, but my company covers my half because I need to be reachable when I'm not at work. So that's a plus. Anyone ever use a similar feature with success? We used it in France/Germany/Italy and it was great. Figure Japan will be as good/better, but it won't hurt to ask.
How much yen should we bring? Disney will be allow us to use card, so that's easy. But throughout Tokyo and Kyoto, how much is cash vs card?
Cheaper to go to Hokkaido for the next 6 months:

Go to Hakone. And check out Kamakura as well for the old Japan feeling.
Only 2 weeks to go until you have to F5 for Ghibli tickets :P
I'm a United States Citizen. How do I prove residency outside of Japan for 10 years in order to get the JR Pass?
Or is that requirement only for Japanese nationals?

I did not stay there myself but I've read great things about Fuji Hakone Guesthouse, very affordable, has its own onsen. We are planning the Hakone > Kamakura trip in November. Would you, or anyone here like to recommend a place to stay for one or two nights in Hakone? Somewhere under $150 USD per night would be ideal.

I stayed at Onsen Guesthouse HAKONE TENT and it was fairly cheap and decent last I recall. We are planning the Hakone > Kamakura trip in November. Would you, or anyone here like to recommend a place to stay for one or two nights in Hakone? Somewhere under $150 USD per night would be ideal.
Hakone was / is very nice, but unfortunately a lot was closed to due to high winds, hoping today is better.
Yeah, keeping an eye on it, it could cause a wee bit of pain for us.Watch out for the next typhoon :P

Assuming everything isn't washed away by this upcoming typhoon, I land in Tokyo on Oct 11 for a two-week stay. Glad this thread exists, I'm gonna comb through it over the next week. HMU if you'll also be traveling there. (Especially if you have a spare Ghibli museum ticket, since I didn't plan this trip well enough in advance to be ready for this month's on-sale period.)
I -think- this next typhoon is going to mostly miss the greater Japan area and go more towards Korea. Of course it can change quickly. Do you have any actual plans? Or just going to go? Also, sounds like you will miss the chaos of Tokyo on Halloween~
Random question...
We're looking at taking ~$1200 worth of yen for 2 weeks (5 days of which will be in Tokyo Disney). Whatever we end up NOT using, what do we do with it? Is it "allowed" to offer a straight exchange here with someone fixing to go on their trip? Local places??

Can anyone recommend a legit aggregator or specific airlines to look at for flying from the UK? I'm looking to book flights for a year from now and want to get in early - though KLM flights are already over £200 more expensive then than my trip in April last year...
Probably flying from Bristol but will could do London if it's direct or way cheaper.
Sure but I'm not looking to book today so any resources I can save for when I decide on a time period would be helpful.
Every airport/bank has exchange facilities for notes. Use coins at convenience stores/charity boxes.
....and that doesn't seem like very much for two weeks? Me and my girlfriend recently spent about US$1900 over about 12 days, not including accomodation, flights or the Shinkansen.
