Japan Travel |OT| We have to go back

Ok so need some advice;
Friend of mine is currently on holidays in Japan. He actually wanted to go last year with his girlfriend but she wasn't sure if she would have been able to go because of school/work. So they decided to delay it to this year. Now, a couple of weeks before they were supposed to go, she decided to go on a holiday to Morocco, and just blew off going to Japan with him. So he still went on his own, and they pretty much broke up.(Which is good, she wasn't great for him).
But now his holiday has this dark cloud hanging over it since he is alone there experiencing all this. I want him to have a fun time there and i think it would help him a bit if he made some friends there. Anyone know some kind of platform where you can meet local people that want to hangout with a tourist basically? Tinder would be too much i think :P

So the ideal consumption of data per day should be 6.5gb so that every 3 consecutive days of consumption would avg. around 19.5gb/3 days, did I get that right or I missed something? lol

Thanks, seems I finally found my ideal service in terms of data allowance.
SonicX_Zero I think you should get a prepaid SIM.
I'm currently using b-mobile, they have 21 day sim loaded with 5 gb data, costs about 3200 yen. Saves you the hassle of carrying another device, and easier on your phone's battery since you'll be using mobile data instead of wifi. Good LTE network too.

Well uhhh I'm using the hell out of my plan and I still have 1gb with 4 days left. Wi-fi is in many cafes & restaurants, and obviously hotels so I save when possible!
Thanks for the suggestion definitely considering it during my next visit especially if I'm going solo, but for this trip data allowance is currently my priority since I'm going with a group and I need as much as allowance as I can get per day.

Just booked a 9 day trip from Canada! My girlfriend and I are leaving November 18 returning on the 28th. We are flying into Tokyo (HND). This is our first trip outside of North America.
Got a great deal using some miles we had saved up, so we have a budget of roughly $2000 CAD each for the 10 day trip. (not including flights obviously). Looking for hotel recommendations in around Shinjuku or Shibuya.
I'm going to be doing some heavy scrolling through this thread for other ideas. Do you think we should plan on just staying in Tokyo? One thing we are set on is Disney, and hopefully Ghibli museum, but we would like to maybe hit up an Onsen for a day or two. Other than that, we're going for the food and just general sight seeing.

Go to Hakone. And check out Kamakura as well for the old Japan feeling.
Only 2 weeks to go until you have to F5 for Ghibli tickets :P

Tinder isn't really a thing here so don't worry about that haha.
There are apps like Meetup that some people use. Its good for making a few connections for things to do or meeting a group to go somewhere. Maybe can find facebook groups as well. OR the tried and true, go to a bar, foreigner or non, and drink with peeps.

It's not CHEAP, but my company covers my half because I need to be reachable when I'm not at work. So that's a plus. Anyone ever use a similar feature with success? We used it in France/Germany/Italy and it was great. Figure Japan will be as good/better, but it won't hurt to ask.
How much yen should we bring? Disney will be allow us to use card, so that's easy. But throughout Tokyo and Kyoto, how much is cash vs card?

Yamanote line, during rush hour... with suitcases.. was an interesting circle of hell (it was our main option to get to Tokyo Station).
Still makes for an interesting story.
Hakone was / is very nice, but unfortunately a lot was closed to due to high winds, hoping today is better.

We are planning the Hakone > Kamakura trip in November. Would you, or anyone here like to recommend a place to stay for one or two nights in Hakone? Somewhere under $150 USD per night would be ideal.
I'm a United States Citizen. How do I prove residency outside of Japan for 10 years in order to get the JR Pass?

That's only for Japanese nationals. You don't have to worry about it.
I think it depends on the visa you get for entry. It needs to be a tourist visa.
I did not stay there myself but I've read great things about Fuji Hakone Guesthouse, very affordable, has its own onsen.
Also, right now, there is an EVA Hakone store next to Yumoto Station.
I practically squealed when I saw it in the bus window.
Awesome, loved my summer trip to Hokkaido last year, might have to do a late winter one this year.
I stayed at Onsen Guesthouse HAKONE TENT and it was fairly cheap and decent last I recall.
The food was pretty good too.

Missed two cheap flight deals because I wanted to wait until I got home from work to buy on the computer and not with my phone, there is still plenty of time before I plan to go, but man it sucks.

Assuming everything isn't washed away by this upcoming typhoon, I land in Tokyo on Oct 11 for a two-week stay. Glad this thread exists, I'm gonna comb through it over the next week. HMU if you'll also be traveling there. (Especially if you have a spare Ghibli museum ticket, since I didn't plan this trip well enough in advance to be ready for this month's on-sale period.)
I -think- this next typhoon is going to mostly miss the greater Japan area and go more towards Korea. Of course it can change quickly. Do you have any actual plans? Or just going to go? Also, sounds like you will miss the chaos of Tokyo on Halloween~

We're looking at taking ~$1200 worth of yen for 2 weeks (5 days of which will be in Tokyo Disney). Whatever we end up NOT using, what do we do with it? Is it "allowed" to offer a straight exchange here with someone fixing to go on their trip? Local places??

No plans, beyond having a chunk of time that's easier to take off in the game-review calendar (news flash: no month is safe anymore, but I'm not on Red Dead duty) and picking Japan as my time-off destination.
Every airport/bank has exchange facilities for notes. Use coins at convenience stores/charity boxes.
....and that doesn't seem like very much for two weeks? Me and my girlfriend recently spent about US$1900 over about 12 days, not including accomodation, flights or the Shinkansen.

Just bring enough for 3 days and then use ATMs to get more money. Unless your credit cards got shitty amounts of fees.
And exchange whatever is left back at the airport when you're home... Or keep it for your next trip to Japan ;P
Can anyone recommend a legit aggregator or specific airlines to look at for flying from the UK? I'm looking to book flights for a year from now and want to get in early - though KLM flights are already over £200 more expensive then than my trip in April last year...

Too early. Most airlines only lets you book up to about 330 days in advance, and domestic flights in Japan are only released 2 times a year for the next 6 months.
Sure but I'm not looking to book today so any resources I can save for when I decide on a time period would be helpful.

Check the first 4 in the OP. Flying from LHR with a layover in Europe/Middle East/Russia is most likely the cheapest option if possible. Prices as low as £500.
I didn't even think to use ATM's. We did that in Germany a lot. I'm assuming they're all over in Tokyo and Kyoto? And most should accept a Chase debit card with a chip?
