Seems about on par with WiiU, maybe slightly more powerful, which is quite good for a portable. If it was a console I would feel underwhelmed.

It has games that both run and look great (like Mario or Zelda), so I'm happy with its power. I don't care if it's barely more powerful than the WiiU, the portability is a good tradeoff.

"Lateral Thinking with Withered Technology" has been Nintendo's ideal for most of it's products. I am perfectly fine with what they are able to achieve with their "outdated" hardware, since the games are good and the price point is fine.

Switch has taken over my gaming interest. I'm fine with it's power and it's more than capable enough to offer beautiful games. I'm super excited that 2019 seems to be the year big publisher support will be arriving in a big way.

It barely represents the generational leap one would expect from one system to the other...

The Switch feels like a Wii-U Pro, if that makes any sense

For a handheld, it's impressive. For a (docked) console, it's disappointing. Just like the Wii U, it feels like last-gen.

These are my exact thoughts. It's great handheld hardware but as a home console the Switch's games feel last-gen. Some of them are up there with the best of last generations games. Anyway, topic asks the wrong question, comparing the Switch to the Wii U is fairly irrelevant. It's in the market with the X1X/PS4 Pro.

I remember telling my whole house to "SHUT THE HELL UP, THIS MIGHT BE SHENMUE 3!!!!!"

I was so wrong.

As for the question. I have been satisfied with graphics since PS3 so no big deal (even though I went 4K with a TCL/Xbox One X)however with the Switch, I have played more games in the last 18 months than I have in 5 years.

Zelda on the subway
Fornite on the shitter.
Doom in the breakroom
Splatoon with the sitter
Hollow Night waiting for the wife to come out of the Salon
This mother lover is the best thing ever!!!!!! It's the bomb!
Did you.. Somehow quote me by mistake? I just woke up and I'm so confused

I can play big-budget AAA titles on the go. It's fuckin' awesome.

I feel like there's nothing this box can't do.

But on the other hand, from 3DS-Switch, or even Vita-Switch, Switch practically leaps up 2 generations, being able to play select current AAA games on the go.

We went from a resolution of 240p, to 720p, and the ability to play giant and complex open world games.
It's basically going from the GameCube, to a heavily buffed up PS3 Pro(if that did end up happening). Which is impressive to say the least.

It is worth noting 18 months in and whenever someone visualizes a switch like device from a competitor the discussion tends to go nowhere. Its hard to argue the Tegra soc powering it is not up to the job. That alone put it in a category of its own.

My issue with the Wii U wasn't its power, it was the user experience. Switch fixes most of my issues. Boot up is quick. Switching between games is very fast.

I think you misunderstand the issue with the Wii U. It wasn't really the use of old chips, it was that there were too few of them. It only had 3 cores when in reality it needed at least double that plus extra RAM.

Overall, I'm happy with the performance, but I look forward to new iterations in the future.

Highly disappointed that its basically a Wii U again since I don't play portably. I really hate the low res jaggy look that comes attached to everything on their hardware. Mario Kart 8 is the only Switch game I'd say looks good. Not looks good for the hardware, but it actually looks good without an asterisk.

Just look at, say, the new Yoshi game compared to Wooly World. Or Splatoon 2 compared to Splatoon 1.

Compared to the Wii U, 1st party games look like a massive improvement on the device when built for it from the ground up. Ports only show minimal improvement, but they probably aren't the fairest means of assessing the hardware.

That said, almost all of Nintendo's first party games over the past 2 generations have had gorgeous graphics. They've never really needed cutting edge hardware to make nice games.

And when it comes to 3rd parties, well, I just buy most of those games on PS4, then do a very rare double dip if I want them portably, so don't feel like I'm missing out on much. I only did this with Rocket League so far.

In sum, I think the hardware is excellent and I'm glad it's not a stationary device. And the graphics still impress me, even in docked mode when playing 1st party games.

What about ARMS? That is by the team that made MK8 and really looks just as great.

Mixed bag. It's generally good with inpressive stuff like Wolfenstein. At the same time though, even if rare, there shouldn't be first party titles going sub 480p.

This is me - I play it handheld and it's probably the only handheld I've played that feels truly comfortable playing for long stretches - BotW looks good on that small screen. Booting it up on the TV though, the pixel, crawl, pop-in and performance dips were immediately noticeable. I like it as a handheld and, honestly, I wish it'd been developed as a stand-alone handheld with a TV out option (the hybrid concept doesn't do anything for me).

As a home console, it's only marginally ahead of the Wii U and feels far closer to the last gen than the current (not a big shock, form factor considered). As a handheld, it's great and about as powerful as any affordable handheld in 2017 could expect to be.

It's fine. Nice boost and more than good enough for me as it's just a Nintendo box (and some indies) for me and I'm not playing those games for the graphics. Any multiplats I'll get on PS4 Pro or PC as I don't care much about portability other than pick up and play indies and retro/retro styled games that look better on a small screen.

It's fine, but in retrospect I would have paid 100$ more for an option with a better screen (Gorilla Glass, better panel...) and a bit more of horsepower with a less downclocked Tegra.

Perhaps we'll get that with a revision on a 7nm node.

The best thing about the Switch is how fast it is. I can open a game and be playing it in about 5 seconds. That alone makes it leaps and bounds better than its predecessor. Heck, that alone already makes me pick it up more than my PS4.

The generational leap that you expect (though is getting smaller and smaller as time goes on) isn't there, but it is the most powerful handheld on the market so I'm more or less fine with it.

Besides that, the majority of my time with the system has being playing games that wouldn't even need WiiU power to run, so my expectations aren't that high. Just so long as it isn't 240p.

I was under the impression that the Wii U was a Pro version PS3/360.
In some ways it was. In some ways it wasn't.

Looking at games like Wind Waker HD - 1080p native output with gorgeous effects - are often beyond the capabilities of the PS3/360 which struggled to even achieve native 720p with consistency.

Staight ports, however, suffered due to CPU limitations. Wii U was overall more powerful, but excelled more on the GPU side.

Yep and it beats loading up phone gaming apps as well. I get it that Switch doesn't need to reserve memory for multitasking and isn't dealing with bloated OS, but it has spoiled me.

It's interesting how the power difference seems greater now than between WiiU and PS360 and yet you see things like Doom and Wolfenstein.

Not that big of a jump, and I'm still surprised at how good some Wii U games look.

It's cool that it's portable, though that usually requires a carrying case and a portable charger.

Except for 2D games, I'm back to checking for if the PS4 version is any better and usually getting it there instead.

But I dont buy a Nintendo system expecting power, because I'm not dumb. More often than not, they use what they can get by with and focus on the games running well, which is probably the best way to go about things.

If a slightly more powerful Switch came out, I wouldn't really care, because I already have more powerful hardware.
Now if a smaller Switch or one with much better battery life came out, I'd be on it day 1.

Im fine with the power, I just wish more 3rd party games were made specifically for the Switch. That's been a huge disappointment so far.

Yeah, I'd pay out the nose for a Switch Pro with OLED

There were plenty of important games that released on those consoles after the launch of the WiiU. Another good example is how games like Rise of the Tomb Raider, Titanfall or Mordor got 360 and PS3 versions but didn't release on WiiU.

Yeah but lifecycle is different. Wii U
Felt lttp, switch doesn't. Having unity and ue4 support early helped a ton.

For what it is, it's great. Compared to the Wii U? It's an okay upgrade but nothing to write home about. Where Switch comes into it's own compared to the Wii U is engine support and architecture.

It might not be on par with the competition, but its good enough for the games I play. The Switch is a huge upgrade over the Wii U as a device, even without a large power increase.

It's fine.

It shows the lower clock speeds in handheld mode, though - a lot of games have some serious downgrades in that mode.

I honestly try not to think about it because it's one of the most pathetic things about the system and just about my only gripe with it. Yes, it's a handheld, but Nintendo could've gone with a faster chip and figured out the logistics/thermals on keeping the handheld properly underclocked and cool. Like others, it's a bit excusable in handheld mode, but docked mode the system is just pathetic when compared to the other major consoles, even their base versions.

3rd parties really don't like the limited power of the Switch, they haven't begun making games, or even bad ports like back in the WiiU days. It's an OK machine but it could have been better.

Lack of great 3rd party support for AAA titles is a real downer.

It's truly an Ouya 2 with a few AAA 1st party titles, mostly just indie games, indie shovelware and indie trashware. To throw some salt on the wound with the indie thing, the indie titles are almost always priced worse than any other platform.

I like my Switch, it's not something I play all the time, I LOVED Mario Odyssey, but I can't pull myself back into that turnbased rabbids game.

I enjoyed Splatoon 2 until I realized the community was rotten to the core with idlers, early leavers, 0 point morons, cheating/glitching. OH and now a paygate to use a crappy P2P system that took forever to matchmake AND had disconnects when the host decided to peace out.

Overall for me, Switch is a semi-ragret, I use it about as much as I used my Vita at this point in it's life cycle. Actually I think I used my Vita a bit more come to think of it.

A couple of first party WiiU ports(Botw, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong TF) doesn't make a great library, the pricing doesn't help anything either.

I'd say with the switch is a wobbly 7(more like a 6.5).

not really that impressive when you realize ps3 came out in 2006, and x360 a year before that.

Edit: I just want to say that I don't hate the switch, but I use it exclusively as a handheld system to play their exclusives and indie games on the go.

How anyone can play games like wolfenstein on it is beyond me.

Well, could've shipped with an X2 instead of an X1. More power, similar battery (due to reduced die size, optimisation). Who knows the cost difference though, those figures are nowhere. Even if it was $10 extra a unit, I'd happily absorb that.
At that point in time (2015) the X1 was likely the only possible choice, realistically.they can leave X2 or 3 for Switch 2

I wish it was more serviceable as a home console. Dock needs to have its own GPU or something.

As a handheld it's fine, and it's my preferred machine for 2D indies. But I can't play stuff like Wolfenstein, Doom, or Fortnite on it.

It's capable enough for me, of course some games could use a little bit more oomph, but other than that I'm glad with the product we got.
