honestly the fact that they decided to make literally one robot master with the designation woman makes it so much worse than just going with "man" as a genderless concept

i mean i like splash woman but wow its dumb

Yeah it's a shame, I remember being pretty disappointed that there wasn't a new one in 10 and now it's the same in 11, bummer. And no, there's no good reason why there aren't more women.

Zero and ZX were already mentioned, as well as Leviathan, but another cool info bit is that Splash Woman was in fact, a homage to Leviathan, just like Storm Man was one to Harpuia. Both MMZ and MM9 and 10 were developed by Inti Creates, so I imagine they were the driving force behind making a female RM.

Also people claiming robots don't have gender or sex are just being dense for no reason. Robots like Roll and Splash Woman are clearly programmed to act feminine anyway and even if they weren't that's not what truly matters here lol, come on.

IIRC People turned Splash Woman into something dirty right away. They were probably scared off from making any more Woman robots after that.

They wanted to do a Mermaid Robot Master so they figured out it would be better to make it a woman. That's it. They obviously come up with the gameplay concepts first, and then they apply their personalities. I assume they haven't done a woman again because their gameplay ideas don't "stick" with a feminine persona. Which is bullshit, but I'm not making the games.

I thought the whole lore of Mega Man universe was that all robots are just mechanical beings, and even if they look masculine or feminine, they are inherently genderless. Hmm, maybe I was wrong.
Well, first we need to be clear that sex and gender are two separate things. Sex refers to the biological ability to be either a father or mother. Gender is a matter of identity, psychology, and sociology. Robots that are incapable of reproduction can still be gendered. For example, Roll is a girl. She is a robot, but she dresses, talks, and acts in a distinctly feminine manner. Likewise, Mega Man is a boy. Both of them have clear genders.

Now, if we dive into the Mega Man lore, even the idea that robots are sexless gets called into question in the later time eras, starting with the X games. Reploids from the X series have genetic information. It is called their DNA Program or DNA Soul. Child Reploids have even appeared in Mega Man X Command Mission. Romamce between Reploids is also established in X4 and X8. The idea that Reploids are capable of reproduction has never been disproved in the series, even if it has never been fully confirmed.

So it is pretty safe to treat robots from the Mega Man franchise as gendered.

Did the robot masters have the opportunity to choose their gender, or was it simply assigned for them at boot-up?

After seeing some of the official Roll merchandise and illustrations out there, somehow I really, really doubt they got scared by this.

I didn't know robots in Megaman had genders. Well, Roll is a robot right? So I guess she counts. Hmm...I guess I just never thought out it. I've never played 9 and 10, so I didn't know there was a female robot master.

I don't know my Megaman lore all that much. I just like to jump and shoot things.

No one better be asking for roll to be playable. Not after Mighty No. 9. That level was without a doubt one of the worst gaming experiences I've ever had.
Roll was playable in Powered Up way back in 2006, long before MN9 was a twinkle in Inafunes eye. Ya could play the whole game as her and even the Copy Robot boss in the Wily fortress became an "evil Roll" instead of "evil Mega".

C'mon Capcom, I need to kill more women. I'm tired of just endlessly killing genderless robots that are arbitrarily referred to as male. /s

You guys keep forgetting that Zero is a great female robot protagonist!

Did it really take that long to mention Iris? I guess she isn't technically a Robot Master if we're only referring to the Original Series, but she is a boss.

There are quite a few Megaman Zero and Megaman ZX bosses that are woman too from what I remember. Basically, the games Inticreates (as a company) are involved in seems to include them more. This continues with Gunvolt and Mighty Gunvolt.

Entire Megaman series? SplashWoman is not even original bro

ZX(A) obviously has Model L based on her, and also Hurricaune, Lurerre, Pandora, Queenbee and Hedgeshock, besides female MCs.

Plus, in EXE and Star Force we get some more fembots (and female operators): Roll.EXE, Harp Note, Queen
Ophiuca, Queen Virgo, Ice/Diamond Ice.

Edit: Forgot about Meddy in EXE5!

Not quite the same thing, but Mega Man X Command Mission has 2 female reploids in your party.

I really wish the Mega Man X collection had included Command Mission. I'm a big fan of series getting a random JRPG spin-off and I remember Command Mission being surprisingly good (although not without its flaws).

The funny thing is, to me, is that the new Mega Man cartoon is only just past 10 episodes in and we already have two female robot masters.

I don't think there is any particular lore reason for why there are so few women.

There really should be more. I was so disappointed when Mega Man 10 and 11 didn't have any women bosses. 9 was a step in the right direction, why didn't they continue that?

Having the Robot Masters being 100% "male" would've been fine. But now with Splash Woman, having a man:woman ratio of like 80:1 is a weird corner they've back themselves into lol.

Reminds me of MvC:I where there were 26 males and only 4 female fighters for the base game. Probably the worse thing about the game for me besides the dead eyes.

I have no idea, really.
There has been a bunch of games and all of them have to come up with 8 unique designs for robot masters. Plus a bunch of different teams have worked on them so its not like its just the artist not liking designing female robots.

If you keep calling them "____man", you can argue that man is genderless, like the robots.
However, if you name a single robot "____woman", you are implying that the rest of the robots are male and the series has in actuality been a sausage fest for 30 years

Well Dr Wily wouldn't make a female robot matter because he's a mysoginoboticist.

Roll and Splash Woman were both made by Dr Light. After the first batch of robots codesigned by Wily were stolen, Dr Light just didn't make very many any more. Of his first new batch of eight, Splash Woman was the first one, but she became a meme online and soon the fan art got out of hand thanks to a viral post by Auto, and Dr Light was too skeeved out to design more female robots.

In fact aside from X he's stopped designing robots at all, people just yell at him to make Splashette real whenever he goes out in public.

That could make sense if it wasn't the fact that Dr Light made three robots without any suffix in their names, two clearly male and one clearly female.
