It will be interesting to see how Smash and Pokemon do on Switch later this year. There are the other exclusive titles who will have gigantic sales. Will they approach or overtake Spiderman sales ?

You might be in the know but just in case:
InFamous was developed by Sucker Punch (now making Ghost of Tsushima).
Insomniac made Spider-Man and before that Ratchet & Clank & Resistance.
Whelp, I don't know why I mixed that up inside my head. Monday morning I guess. Maybe it's all the puddles. Sorry for everyone involved.

Anyway, I found Ratchet & Clank a total borefest too, so it still stands lol.

Crazy.
Can't believe a niche superhero game would sell this much to the general audience.
I guess being in The Avengers as a cameo helps increase his awareness with the populace.

Great job Insomniac. You were 98% successful. Wait, 98?

And while Far Cry is unlikely to see many more major sales bumps. Spider-Man will be a key Christmas title for new and existing PS4 owners.

It's going to pass 8m (worldwide) this year.

Well deserved, the game is even better than I expected. Insomniac really put everything they had into the game and I can't wait for the sequel.

Physical sales comparisons are not absolute, but they're a good barometer for what I think are games that fit 3 criterias:

1. AAA games with a major retail-marketing, conventional ad push.
2. AAA games that is marketed with exclusively or primarily single-player component.
3. AAA games that has strong openings and legs show them to be front-loaded ( e.g. having >50% week-on-week drop ; significant amount of sales are week one sales )

In the case of FC5 and Spidey, I think they clearly meet both of these criterias and while FC5's post-game offering are seemingly more robust than Spidey's, I don't think they are significant enough that the digital attach ratio differs by more than 15%.

Incredible achievement. Considering far cry is multiplayer/coop focused and been out for longer, I feel it is probably ahead of Spider-Man including digital.

But why? Do you do the same with other exclusive games?
No other games have set record like this this gen .....spidey is a worldwide hero icon as Batman etc etc isn't masterchief or Nathan Drake that are "attached" to a console brand.... why is so strange to imagine how would be sales on all platforms ? BTW it wasn't to bother ppl ...so just close it here

They don't mean anything but yeah, we need to be carefull. Remember: during its first week, Spider-Man did twice as much as God of War in the UK. Worldwide, it only did 200K more.
No, that was 3 days tracking though.

We dont know first week numbers

I don't think you were port begging.

But on the topic of it being multiplatform; if it was multiplatform it wouldn't have had Sony's influence and funding and it wouldn't have been as good, so there's no telling how much better or worse it would have performed.

Cool for Spider Man. Got the plat it over the weekend. Good with some flaws. Sequel will probably be amazing.

FarCry 5 is my GOTY so far btw. Love that game.

In fact I was talking about this game in particular not about others Spiderman games
This game only exists because of Insomniac and Sony. It being multiplat would mean it's not the same, so who knows what it'd sell like? It very likely wouldn't have the same marketing and if it did, would be rammed with microtransactions to make up for it.

I already fear this will be a good description for Square Enix's Avengers game.

Pretty crazy. Great year for Sony then with two record breaking blockbusters. Reckon they'll end the gen with at least five 10m+ sellers.

Just wanted to highlight something...

5 10m+ sellers = 50m units sold * $60 = $3b

But PS+ subs are @ 35m * $60 = $2.1b per YEAR

Sony are KILLING it this gen for sure, but I feel like videogame revenue is being dwarfed by subscription income. Not to mention, net income is probably a lot higher with subs than games too.

It will probably rank top5 in the year, I can only see Cod, RDR2 and not much else surpassing it... BFV will certainly have a hard time.

Edit: Forgot about sports games, those are usually huge...

Not to mention they don't reach 10 million units at $60, and that even when they are selling at $60 not all revenue goes to Sony.

It's one of the points I used to make when I vouched that even the biggest games would make more money when delivered by a subscription.

I can totally see Sony starting offering their 1st party games on Psnow as well. Imagine the same 35m that sub to plus also subbing to Psnow? That's 3.5-7 billion in yearly revenue depending on the sub plan. Or making per year more money than likely all the games they launched the entire gen made.
