First off let me say I still love this movie. Mainly because I just love the world of Tron so much, and seeing it realized again in an age that can handle it better is just beyond far out. I think Legacy had the opportunity to make Tron huge, but I just watched it again today, and it was a bit easier to see how some points against it prevented it from being the massive success they were obviously hoping it would be.

1. CGI Bridges

Let's get a big talking point out of the way, and let me state my opinion outright real quick. I like CGI Bridges. BUT, only for CLU.

latest

For CLU I think it works great. I mean, he's a program. Because of that, I actually like the idea of him looking like a simulated young Flynn. But where Disney fucked up, is that they for some reason decided to include those early scenes which were ENTIRELY UNEEDED of the real Flynn with a CGI face.

This screws up what could've been this kind of neat thing that would have been accepted easier by the audience, and just makes people say "wtf" and laugh at how it almost instantly aged. It may seem petty, but it will always be a weird tarnish on the movie that they could have completely avoided with better direction in those early scenes.

2. The Tron Knight?

One of the main things that makes Tron's aesthetic so cool is the feeling of dark, empty space punctuated with bright neons. And this movie nailed that in a lot of ways. But at the same time, this movie came out around the time that Nolan's Batman movies were the biggest things out there, and it's obvious they were trying to ride that dark-tone vibe.

From the intro stuff in the real world that just seems like it's trying a little too hard to be dim-lit dramatic, to the game world not allowing anything too crazy beyond the awesome visuals, the movie is very much playing for a certain tone, and playing it safe with that tone on top of that. This leads us to leaving, I guess some of the more "wacky" stuff, behind. Everything just feels very safe.

So stuff like this...

Became this

We also didn't get anything just fucking crazy and weird, like Master Control.

latest

Pretty much what I'm saying is, it should have had the confidence to take itself a little less seriously in some places, or at least go a little crazy. I don't think these now pretty goofy things from the original were intended to be goofy at the time or anything, but that's what they ended up being. It became part of it's charm. And people love Tron because of stuff like this along with the stuff that did end up getting into Legacy, despite the original not being that great of a movie. Legacy should have tapped into that more, focused more on it's source material, kind of like how the Marvel movies do today. But instead just played to that Dark Knight-like style too straightforwardly, and the movie suffers from just straight boredom sometimes because of it.

3. Everyone besides Jeff Bridges sucks.

Sam is just...not compelling. A very typical character trying his best to be atypical. You don't hate him, but you definitely don't love him either. He's just...there. To move the plot along and get to Jeff Bridges. Quorra borders on being interesting, but never makes it past just feeling like a love interest with a bit of back bone. Everyone else may as well not exist. Sam's father figure type guy in the real world and anyone else out there. CLU's servant dude or pretty much anyone else on the grid. The only ones that feel like that have presence and actually matter are both Jeff Bridges, Flynn and CLU. And while Bridges gives a very respectable performance, it's not enough to stop the movie from feeling sort of hollow.

The closest any other character gets to having something compelling going on with them is Tron himself. But that's not even used as a strong element, and is mainly just cool because of his rad "I fight for the users!" line. To be fair, this is definitely something the original struggled with too, and I'd say even more so. While they did make some progress in the right direction with Legacy, it wasn't enough to stop it from feeling like it was suffering again from one of the major issues from the original.

Anyway, I fucking love Tron, and like I said I still really enjoy watching this movie. It bums me out that the movie wasn't as big as they hoped, because I want more Tron movies and just Tron shit period. I know the movie didn't straight up bomb, and I keep hearing rumblings that another movie is coming every now and then, but those seem to have been happening for years. I just really hope they make another. And if they do, I really hope they can learn from their mistakes in Legacy, put their full concentration on it, and make it something really special. The more Tron there is in the world and the more people that love it, the better.

The true dropped ball in regards to Tron was cancelling Uprisng after just one season that ended on one of the most brutal cliffhangers ever.

Truly to good for this world

Most brutal is no third movie even though deleted scene hinted at the return of MCP because of the son of the antagonist of the first movie

I kind of liked it. I never saw the original Tron when I was younger and only watched it around the time that Legacy came out, and it hasn't aged well.

Tron Legacy was far from a masterpiece, but it was a decent movie and Olivia Wilde looked incredible in it. The short black hair, especially...

You're telling me that there was a movie that came with that incredible soundtrack?

Did anyone ever figure out how Kosinski landed this movie in the first place? Like literally the dude had done some random CG spots and commercials, but was handed the keys to a near $200m revival of a cult classic as his directorial debut.

I liked it enough at the time to buy the Blu-ray (which is a rare thing for me). I rated it as the best Star Wars style movie I had seen in ages (specifically A New Hope vibes).

Disappointed they never made another movie after that.

I liked the movie but yeah, leaving it on that ending is just unfair.

I think a few months eariler was the Marvel deal and THANKS TO BRAD BIRD, Tron 3 isn't happening.

Soundtrack is so good I think of it today. Just a really epic high-concept IP resurrection that didn't have the script to make it work. Every time I see the Lego ideas set the good and bad rush back.

I'm glad we got the daft punk soundtrack. Best thing to come out with Troy attached to it

I think i like the idea of Tron more than the actual Tron movies.

Yeah, the film was an extend Daft Punk music video for me as well. Kingdom Hearts treated Tron better.

I liked the movie, found it "OK", not amazing. Tron himself was very underutilized, considering the name of the movie. It really should have at least showed his struggle to fight against whatever made him act as Clu's minion. And yeah, young Jeff Bridges really pulled me out of it in the theater, they should have only used him as Clu.

This movie's aesthetic and atmosphere were through the roof. I never saw the original Tron and appreciated this movie for what it was. I just loved the super clean, solid neon world they created. The story was secondary to that for me.

I really enjoyed it, but I love pretty much everything I've seen Jeff Bridges in. The visuals and soundtrack were amazing but yeah, a lot of the characters feel flat apart from Flynn. I'd love a 3rd film, though.

My friend used to unironically list it as "the best film since Star Wars"

Whilst I'm nowhere near agreeing to that statement (either from a position of how good Tron Legacy was, or from the suggestion that Star Wars is the best movie in existence), I did thoroughly enjoy it though and was looking forward to a sequel.

CGI Bridges was pretty rubbish, but for the time still fairly impressive - you look at how far de-aging tech has come now with the MCU though and yeah, I can imagine Legacy will have aged awfully if I were to watch it again.

One thing I thought the film did very well though was its implementation of 3D. Having the real world in 2D and only having The Grid in 3D was rather clever.

Yeah, as a fan of the original, this one still hurts. And I definitely agree that its a shame the movie didn't embrace any of the open weirdness of the original's world building like master control. I also wasn't a fan, despite how visually amazing Legacy was, of how they moved away from the circuit board aesthetic of the original, to a more generic, techno-club scene kind of look.

i saw it on 3D blu ray when that was supposed to be the next big thing, fresh off Avatar hysteria. my mind was blown even though the movie was just kinda "there"

i'm of two minds about the movie, on one hand OP is right it played things too safe and doesn't make for a particularly memorable experience (outside the visuals and soundtrack). on the other it was pretty much a 1:1 adaptation of what you could expect from Tron in 2010, keeping in mind the first movie wasn't that great in the first place. dumb fun popcorn movie with "dude that was cool" stoner visuals

in some ways i'm glad the movie wasn't a breakout hit as Disney would've ran the concept to the ground by now with several sequels and an "expanded universe", but still unfortunate we never got a third one either

It had its highs and lows, but ultimately I was excited for the (now canned) Tron 3. Highs being the visuals, soundtrack, Bridges, and the real life 15 min intro.

It was definitely an entertaining movie due to the atmosphere of the music+visuals, but yeah it was lacking in about every conceivable way otherwise.

Like I can't even remember anything about the final stretch of the movie besides you know who sacrificing himself, all of the cool sequences were in the middle of the movie.

There was that plane sequence, "I fight for the user", Flynn vs Clu, then the real world sequence.

Tron Legacy is one of my favorite movies of all time. Being a huge nerd i loved its visual design, and of course the music e.t.c fits in so well.

Yes the story e.t.c is pretty lame overall, but i don't even care. I was really sad they decided to drop the franchise (the cartoon was also awesome).

The aesthetic was akin to looking through the side panel window of my pc and seeing nothing but darkness faintly lit by cold blue leds. So in my experience it felt familiar.

I liked the film just fine and still would like a sequel.

There are visuals and set pieces in Tron Legacy that are downright breathtaking. Owning it in HD and viewing it with a solid sound system is an enthralling experience.

However, the overall narrative and the casting/acting is below average at times. For me, the ball-dropping manifested in how poorly the studio handled the proposed franchise and why they failed to deliver on a sequel that would have explored much more fundamental questions. It does not help that the greatest idea of the movie was tackled without finesse and dismissed in favor of a weird love story.

Still like the movie, would have loved to see a sequel. Soundtrack and atmosphere are both spot on.

It's a pet peeve but what's with saying "Disney" as if they wrote and directed the film? The films flaws rest with the creative team who made the film not Disney: unless there's receipts that the director and scriptwriter were instructed day 1 by Mickey to have CGI Flynn, weak plot that fails to elaborate on most of the plot points raised and a more grounded version of the grid.

I like aspects of it but can we point criticism at the actual people making the decisions if we're going to criticize? I just dislike the overarching use of Disney, MS, Sony, etc when it's arguably nothing to do with them other than funding the project in cases like this. Unless like I say there was actual studio interference in which case I'll eat crow but I don't remember hearing any complaints that Disney execs were forcing these decisions.

Yeah I should mention that I loved Legacy but I've still never seen the original despite being born in the 80s. I guess I had no conceptions going in which would've helped.
