For me, Venom serves as a curiosity. Why did they make this? What were they thinking when they greenlit this?

The Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog movies fit this for me as well.

Detective Pikachu though because of the Oscar prospects.

Yeah, early on, I was convinced Venom would, at worst, turn out okay. Now, I'm not so sure.
What I've seen since the last trailer doesn't look particularly good.

Still, with the level interest the trailers have gotten, I do expect it to do well at the box office. In the first weekend at least.

I miss moviepass for stuff like Ant-Man&Wasp, Solo, and Venom. I didn't get around to seeing Solo until last week and it was totally alright.

And I think 100% chance Venom tops Gravity for best October OW. But I'm not confident in it cracking $100M anymore.

All the Dolby theaters in a forty mile radius are already sold out for ASIB. I feel like it will be huge. Got my tickets for Friday a few days ago and was just checking.

For Venom, it's "We have these rights, we're not doing anything with them, Marvel doesn't want to pay us what we want for them, and we can make some money if we keep the budgets managable and the movie is at least Batman Superman level."

Thing cost less than 100 mil and is opening big. Sony made the right decision.

Was Tom Hardy ever a great actor? I'm asking honestly here, I've never seen him be anything more than decent in anything. It's always seemed like he's adjacent to good actors and leeches off them.

Hardy was excellent in Warrior and The Drop. Problem is Hardy is an actor who needs a strong director to really bring him in and shape his performances otherwise he has a tendency to go 'off reservation'.

Ruben Fleischer is an absolute flake of a director (he completely lost control of Gangster Squad with chatter than Sean Penn grew so sick of his fecklessness he ended up directed scenes himself) who was never up to the task to reigning in Hardy (stories of his behaviour on Taboo are near legend) who just ran amok.

Apparently Sony even went as far to send a production executive to the Atlanta set of Venom for the shoot to try and keep Hardy in check. No such luck. I have a feeling that the "turd in the wind" line is pure Hardy and wasn't anywhere near the shooting draft.

Hardy may have dropped out of Suicide Squad but, like the plot of Final Destination, you can run but you cannot hide from an awful CBM and now he has one all of his own.

So what are the chances that Sony goes:

"Fuck it, we can't do anything with the SM license, lets sell it back to Marvel".

Or is this movie is going to be the first turd of many (offshoots).

Venom's being screened to second-tier press the day before release in the U.S., at which point it will have already been released in the UK and other territories.

If this gets more than 40% on RT I will be stunned.

People are comparing it to Ghost Rider.

I think Suicide Squad's score is the benchmark to beat for Venom.

Venom is still probably making bank week one, but that second week drop could be BvS territory.

Y'know that "The Darkness" movie is probably never going to get made so it feels like Venom should've probably ripped that off.

I'll give someone at Sony credit, they knew getting Venom right look wise would at least make the first weekend review proof.
