I do think Oculus is getting pretty damn close to that with the Oculus Quest. Unfortunately it has no way of connecting to a computer wirelessly so it is limited to its onboard system but it's still the right price and really what looks to be a solid foundation for VR on a mass level.
Imagine being able to leverage oculus quest with a console backend driving the game/world. (maybe that is what scarlet will do.)

Not sure which wireless tech could make this possible, though.

Could you elaborate on that? Because it was Phil Spencer himself who brought up the next Xbox and was even talking about it with Giant Bomb. Do you really think he´d be doing that if it were a 2020 console?

I also don´t think the Xbox One X brought nearly enough of a change to hardware sales of Xbox for them to rely on the Xbox One family of consoles till Fall 2020

This is kind of a good thing to keep in mind. The majority of Xbox One owners are still using a base console, or the One S. As great as it is that One X keeps winning Digital Foundry comparisons, only a limited audience sees those results.

WiFi 802.11 ax which has a 10Gb/s throuhput might be enough.

found the answer to my own question:

WiGig will allow for 4k streaming to a headset @60Hz.

It would be nice for Rocksteady to say something about their next project though.

Honestly the cancellation of PSX does have me wonder more about 2019...gives more credibility.

Yep a very small number in the overall market .
Still don't think they going rush there new consoles .

For me having killzone, resogun, and some cross gen titles was all the incentive I needed to get ps4 at launch. Stuff like AC4 was so much better on PS4 compared to the last gen consoles

They had just released a console that they were heavily marketing in the months prior...

Assuring that ANOTHER one is coming is pretty asinine if it is years away.
The point wasn't that another one is coming .....he said it with a little difference......he told at e3 that ms want the next Xbox to be the most powerful console as is the X ...like "not only we are not leaving the console market like lot of people saying around ...but instead we will have the best product (hardware wise) console gamers can buy" ....and as you will agree....that's something

Yeah... I already planned on a new TV next year but I'm already starting to consider at least one new console. Better to have the wife's approval and not need it lol.

I was hoping to wait til 2020 so I have more time to squirrel money away. My wife isn't gonna be too keen on buying a new tv while our current one still works fine. The longer they wait the more affordable a good 4K/hdr tv will be.

Interesting. I would be ok with a station that you have to plug in and have on a table/entertainment center that has unobstructed line of sight to the headset and allows the device to connect to a console/PC and allow for much higher fidelity, untethered experiences.

Save the 2020 camp, Mr. Schreier.
A lot of people are taking the cancellation of PSX as a sign that the PS5 is coming next year, but it seems like the exact opposite to me. Not really seeing much of a case for 2019. Sony will probably get through its currently announced lineup by mid-2020 or so, and then it'll be time for a new console.

There is already wireless solutions for the vive which dont sacrifice quality.
It will be a shame if next gen VR dont offer this option.

I feel your pain friend. I'm authorized for a new TV and sound bar next year, but game consoles are a stretch. I could bargain for one, but I definitely can't win the fight to get two at launch. I'd be happy with just PS5 in 2019.

You think? I don't think that most of what we call "hardcore gamer" are happy that Sony could go on the market faster than Ms ..because it could mean a less powerful base console ....then we have those who love sales ..they are in hype for sure for who start the gen first.... because sales wise... this usually mean to win the sales during the gen (but there are proof that don't always it works like this either )
PS5 releasing a year early is going to do serious damage. Remeber ps1 to ps2? I think the hype from ps4 to ps5 is going to be even crazier. The ps5 could be tens of millions ahead by the time xbox launches. Because of that I expect both to release the same year so 2020.

The single most compelling arguement for a year early is the 360. Microsoft took Mindshare from PlayStation post fricken PS2. The Mindshare from ps4 to ps5 for a full year would be crazy

The Xbox 360 did not launch when it did solely to get a leg up on PlayStation. Microsoft had to bury the OG Xbox as soon as possible. Sony also planned to release the PS3 earlier.

And what about Paris Games Week?

The US press (and sites like this) seem laser focused on PSX. But last year Sony's major post E3 conference was Paris. Here they revealed Ghost's of Tsushima and the latest Last of Us 2 trailer. If that's also cancelled, as seems highly likely, that's means no presence in their biggest market, Europe, in both '18 and presumably '19.

I don't see any conceivable way how Sony can get through the next 18-24 months with the handful of 1st Party exclusives we've know about for a very long time. At the very least Sony will need to talk about PS5 next year. You can be sure Microsoft will have all eyes on next-gen.

Sony would do more damage than good turning up at E3 with a near identical lineup as this year.

Do we know If Sony has a presence at PGW this year?

At the end of the day they got their huge advantage from sony taking a shotgun and blowing their own legs off with the PS3 launch. With a normal launch any advantage MS had in 1 year would have been erased in an equal length of time if not sooner.

It proves first party devs are deep into next gen development, but that doesn't really guarantee a timeline. Still, you have to wonder what E3, Gamescom, PGW, and TGS look like next year with no new console announced and a dirth of new PS4 games in development.

It kind of goes against the cross gen narrative that's been doing the rounds. If they aren't showing PS5 games til they announce the hardware then presumably they will all be next gen exclusive.

Thinking about it again. I think sony knows a 2019 release could be the best way to jump into next gen. A whole year before your comp allows them to build a base of 10s of millions.
2019 PS5
2020 Xbox One 2

Then throw in PS5 pro 1 or 2 years after xbox one 2.

With the recent things they've been fixing like cross play, progression and psn now downloads they want to kick start next gen with no negativity. All they need to do is ensure BC with atleast PS4 and they automatically lock in their base for PS5. No one is going to let go of their library so PS5 will be the natural upgrade bath for the 90 million ps4 owners.

If they don't have BC, welp. good luck.gif MS is going to all over you if you pull of that stupidity.

This is the really frustrating thing right now. Even if you think PS5 next year is crazy talk, it is much less crazy than what you describe succinctly here.

Cross-gen games were a terrible idea. In addition to selling poorly on last-gen systems, as people have mentioned over the past few pages in this thread, they put a massive amount of stress on development teams that have to double their SKUs.

The prevailing hope is that you don't have to do cross gen anymore. You can build for the old console and it will "just work" with backwards compatibility. Moreover, with cross play, you can play with friends across platforms and generations.

I'm sure one or more of these will be restricted in order to sell new hardware, much to the ire of the consumer, and perhaps developer.

Why're you guys so desperate for your year to be right? Kinda strange.
Because it would be good for everyone if next gen begin in 2020 at the earliest.
  • For consumers, it means a better console or a better price. The least powerful console will be the limit for all third party games for many years.
  • It also means strong exclusives for the launch and the first year. The first half of 2014 was terrible, I really hope we won't live the same thing again.
  • For third party publishers, it means a stronger launch for next-gen, so better sales for their games (and next-gen only third party titles sooner).
  • Sony and Microsoft have no need to hurry. Both have strong exclusives coming to their consoles and these consoles still sell well.

I hope Sony and Microsoft will release their consoles at the same time, with strong exclusives (no cross-gen titles, or just for launch) and at the good price (400$). I don't think it's possible in 2019.

It is more the software for me at this point. Giving first party and 3rd party 1 more year to prep their games sounds great to me.

Next e3 is for PS5 ..or Sony will look embarassing at e3 again with the same games for 3 or 4 years

It will not happen

MS is all about having games play across multiple gens though.
