He says nothing new, but it's interesting to see someone who's usually pretty Nintendo-positive to rant like this.

Havent watched the video yet, but agree with the title.

"Hey, lets have them pay for something they've been getting for free all these years without also having a killer app to justify the product" just feels wrong.

I get that this had to happen sooner or later, but they should have launched this alongside Smash or something. Not... freaking NES games.

Pretty much everyone saw it would be terrible months before launch and that didn't change when they put it being a paywall.
The worse in all this is no backing up save if you don't pay and even then, it's held hostage by Nintendo and you can't do anything with it.

Eh, Arlo's pretty quick to call Nintendo out on stuff he doesn't agree with. His channel gained popularity largely because of very critical videos on Paper Mario and Hey! Pikmin. I usually like that he's pretty fair about the good and the bad, though his dislike for motion controls is sometimes annoying with how often he brings it up and frames them as objectively bad.

Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Smash Ultimate are all certainly killer aps. Yes the first two have been available for free, but we've known since before the Switch launched that they weren't going to be that way for long.

Why is he a sock puppet? Is he also a sock puppet at his own convention? Does he lay underneath the table all afternoon?

Youtube is weird.

Right. But, the idea is to release a service alongside a game that requires that service. Not several months before/after. Yes, people will get this once Smash comes out. Many people have already gotten this for other games. But, I dont know anyone who's happy about it. Nintendo have changed next to nothing, they just made a previously free service cost money.

Also? According to Arlo's video, Splatoon 2 doesn't even have dedicated servers or Cloud Saves. So... you're literally only paying for the ability to play online, nothing else. That's... for lack of a better word, kinda scummy.

Smash comes out in December.
Probably not the smartest way of handling it, but Smash likely got pushed back a bit for whatever reason.

Thenm wouldn't the smart thing to do be to push this service back until Smash is out?

Yea, but now splatoon 2 doesn't even have a server so it's paying for the same shoddy online.

There's nothing about the service that makes it worth the money to me. I'd love for Nintendo to stop being incompetent assholes though and just give us local save backups, but I'm sure its more profitable for them to hold the saves hostage behind a paywall.

Youtube is weird.
He does live shows and greets people in person (in puppet?)
I think videos show him on the show floor so I'm not sure how that's handled or if people could see him
Could have just waited untill then for Switch online too. Not like we'd be missing much.
Maybe, but the program was already pushed back a ton.
If people think it's not worth it until the next killer app, then they could wait 2 months to get it

Just tired of the whole YouTube culture.

Must make the wackiest looking thumbnail!
Don't forget to add an ALL-CAPS TITLE!!
Should I post as a person or an off-brand Muppet?

Oh, well.

Oldmanyellsatcloud.jpg
What does that really have to do with YouTube culture? He has a character he uses for his channel, people like it, and the thumbnail gets the point of the video across pretty well. Nothing about YouTube "culture" in that thumbnail. He ain't Jake Paul or any other hype beast.

What is even weirder is that it's obviously the man BEHIND the puppet that talks to us. Not the character. It's the man, talking to us sometimes about his family, about his history as a gamer, etc. But he still keeps talking with his puppet voice and using the puppet, despite talking to us about some very personal things, not acting like "hey I'm Arlo, I'm a muppet that loves playing video games!"
I think he does it for his children, I've seen a video where they were super happy to see Arlo. But it's still weird that it's definitely the man behind the puppet that just use the puppet as an avatar instead of a character.

How can any of you hate on Arlo? Arlo is awesome. He has one of the more intelligent channels around. Very balanced, very articulate, and his gimmick, rather than being yet another "omg I'm so angry and need to yell into the void" cringe fest, is instead cute and adorable, and actually something unique for once. Arlo rocks.

The NES games make the sub worth it for me, but if you're not interested in that then yeah, the service is pretty trash right now.

The thumbnail is literally just Arlo looking at his Switch, the title is not in all-caps, and the puppet gimmick is creative and unique. Begone with this useless thread whining.

Yeah, this whole thing just makes me cringe. But i'm sure it's a good way to stand out or something.

Sorry, back on topic.

Something I don't see mentioned a lot, and that I hoped the video would address but didn't, is that despite the service having launched a few weeks ago, there's still no news about the "special discounts" that are supposedly included with the service. I mean, the way they announced the service itself wasn't too good, but the fact we still don't know anything about what's supposed to be one of the selling points of the service feels.. I don't know, I don't want to say false advertising but certainly something close. Specially given that knowing Nintendo and how they've handled this I don't really expect them to say anything about it any time soon, only to reveal it and be something underwhelming. I certainly won't be paying for it.

This list sums up a big problem with Switch online. There aren't a ton of big multiplayer games to begin with. You listed 3 (two of which are well over a year old and the third isnt even out), and I'd struggle to name a whole lot outside of those. Conversely, just in the next few weeks PS4/Xbox are getting games like Black Ops, WWE, Soul Caliber, and Red Dead all with Online. The list really pales in comparison on Switch.

Funny enough, the one big upcoming game with online on Switch is Mario Party which has very mediocre online implementation.

No please, I needed cooud saves ASAP, now I can rest easy knowing my saves are safe.
Waiting until december would have been disastrous

Were you planning on losing your Switch somewhere between now and December? You've had it however long you've had it up to now, what would a few more months hurt? Besides, these are cloud saves nobody other than Nintendo can access.

It still blows my damn mind the level of outrage this service is getting for a $20 annual subscription.

You're paying for servers. Yes it was free but we always knew the online service was going to switch to a paid model.

For a third of the price of the other console services, you're getting nearly the exact quality of life. Outside of third party games being free for the month, I'm not sure what quality of life improvements folks want to see to the online service. It seems the essence of criticisms are "I don't want to pay to play games"

I'm not currently subscribed to NSO but if I wanted to play splatoon or whatever I'd have no qualms dishing out $4 to do so.

But I'm not. That's the entire point. Games like Splatoon 2, one of Nintendo's biggest Multiplayer games don't have dedicated servers. Likely other games as well, I have no idea.

Arlo goes into this EXACT thing in his video, on paper it sounds good, in practice it... isn't.

Life is to short to be to upset over 20$.

Edit: Sorry. Yea there's a lot of issues with this. The biggest one imo is the lack of ability to back up locally.

It's so cheap that I don't even care for now, I paid like 5€ (6 persons family plan) for a year and get to play a list of NES games and more will be added. At best I get to have some extra fun, at worst I lost 5 euros....

The ending of the video is so appropriate for what the next 20+ pages are going to be.

Yes but.... *for me*, it's one thing that Nintendo told us from the get-go that online was gonna be a paid service from Sept 2017 onwards. I think people reconciled in their minds that it was an extended trial period. We're now 18 months into the life of the system, that's like 1/3 of the way through it's probably lifecycle. It almost seems odd now to flick the switch( heh) turning online into paid at this point.

Switch online is certainly very mediocre compared to Xbox Live and PSN, but I care more about those three games than the entirety of basically all other online console games. I bought an Xbox One X and Xbox Live for Monster Hunter World, and haven't played anything else online with it because the games just don't interest me. I recognize this isn't the case for most other people, but Switch online is the better value proposition for me specifically.

Oh yeah because I totally schedule when can people rob me, or when can my Switch fall and break, or when can my Switch drown.
Anything can happen at any time, I'm glad we got the service already and I have my saves safe for at least 1 year and 6 months

Yeah it's a shitty service that could be a lot better (and we SHOULD ask better of Nintendo) but like he says, what can you do? If you want cloud saves and the ability to keep playing Splatoon 2 you've got to pay up. It doesn't feel good at all.

Also they've had a good 18 months since Switch launch to get this ready and we've still not got any subscriber special offers, something that was touted as 1/5th of the service.

Arlo's pretty awesome. Don't be haters.

And yeah the service is useless to me atm, I'll get it for Smash and Dragon Marked for Death in December.

I'm not as high on Nintendo as Arlo, but he makes excellent content. Surprised to see him on Era though. I think he presents a fair opinion on the whole Nintendo online situation. Totally different from what spin masters were posting on this site..

I can see where you're coming from and I'm pretty similar, but we're clearly in an incredibly small minority so it's hardly worth noting.

From a marketing selling point, it seems far worse to advertise to consumers "buy our online to play these two year old games and one or two upcoming games" versus "buy our online for several big multiplayer games coming in just the next few weeks and a slew of others on their way or the dozens more in our back catalog."

I mean yeah, looking past the fact that its a puppet, his arguments are sound. They're also pretty much what everyone else is saying. I just don't see the point of paying for this except for people who primarily play online multiplayer games, and thats a hard pill to swallow now becaue that was free for a year and a half. A bunch of old NES games aint doing it for me especially with the fact that the select few I would want to play aint part of the service. I'm not essentially paying for something I want, I end up paying to get back what I had before.
