Yikes that video looks like a big drop off. I finished this on Switch around release, I don't really feel like going back again, but I hope for any new players that the overall experience is better even if parts suffer.
The 1.0 looks much sharper in a lot of scenes?
Or is that labelled wrong
Might be TAA not being applied in 1.0 or something? Because if they're not labelled wrong that almost feels like a big downgrade.
That's pretty bad then. Either the resolution or the post processing is making 1.2 look considerably blurrier.
If I had frame rate software, I'd run a test but it does feel smoother to play in 1.2. I guess the trade for smoother performance was resolution/IQ.Performance better be a locked 30 or close to it, because 1.2 looks like a clear resolution drop.
From a frame rate perspective, 1.2 does looks smoother though. 1.0 is choppy as hell in certain parts of that video.
I have thought that myself. Of the Switch was at least plugged in, it should allow the extra oomph it gives you when docked, at the power supply is the only reason Handheld mode doesn't run faster.I don't remember 1.1 looking that clear or running that poorly. I think Doom was the same way. Unpatched ran poorly but kept resolution higher. 1.0 looks about as clear as docked does a lot of the time. Maybe 1.0 keeps that resolution profile somehow. I watched it on a 42", but the smaller Switch screen can't mask resolutions that low. 1.0 must look very nice on the Switch's screen though. Makes me really wish Nintendo would allow docked clocks on the go. Sometimes I know I'm not going to have much time to play on the go anyway, so I wouldn't mind killing the battery in an hour or so. I guess with Switches warping from normal docked use it might not be the best idea.
But did Austria get the butchered German version, too? They always get the general EU versions so that would surprise me. The German SKU is of course its own thing so that one not having gotten patched yet is not hard to believe (though it is odd that they would not do it all at once). Just one more reason to simply import from literally anywhere else, like I did (also from Germany but would never touch the German version with a ten foot pole).
I bought this game yesterday and I need some advice...
I started the game up while the update was downloading and thought it was really playable that way. I was surprised it looked so much sharper than Doom. Then of course the update finishes, I restart it and it looks like absolute dog poop. Extremely blurry, as many of you have said. I play mostly in handheld mode and while I usually like higher frame rates, I'd gladly take 20fps over this 240p or whatever it is. So, if I delete the game and go back to 1.0, how much of the game can be played that way? I know there's a required 8gb download.
Maybe I'll do a docked comparison, since that seems to have been the biggest benefits. I still have 1.1v of the game on one of my Switch, so it won't be too difficult to do.I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Idk about version 1.0, can't watch the video now, but version 1.1 of Wolfenstein II is extremely blurry in both portable and docked mode. It reaches embarrassingly low resolutions in docked mode, and embarrassingly low framerates in undocked mode. The patch just fixed it, made the game sharp when docked and smooth (But still blurry) when undocked... And people complain?
Edit: Okay, I saw the video... Are people for real? Version 1.0 is a slideshow! That's now at all how version 1.1 was either. That was playable, at least.
Definitely do that, it's a shame the auto-updates screwed you over, because sadly this comparison is not representative of the change most people will see :)Maybe I'll do a docked comparison, since that seems to have been the biggest benefits. It'd be good to have Digital Foundry take a look at this.
Definitely. That's why the video is unlisted, haha.Definitely do that, it's a shame the auto-updates screwed you over, because sadly this comparison is not representative of the change most people will see :)
I doubt you'd take it when actually playing the game, honestly. Version 1.0 is more of a placeholder than anything else, if you bought it digitally you went straight to 1.1 even at launch, and with the cart it makes you download the patch. And trust me, there are areas that would run worse. On top of this, version 1.1 (The one that Digital Foundry analyzed and everyone played) is more blurry than 1.2 anyway. And if there are areas on 1.1 where the framerate is terrible in portable mode, I don't want to imagine in 1.0.
I'm talking about Doom's day 1 update. Iirc, someone was posting unpatched screens and they were higher resolution but performance was poor.I have thought that myself. Of the Switch was at least plugged in, it should allow the extra oomph it gives you when docked, at the power supply is the only reason Handheld mode doesn't run faster.
As for DOOM's famous patch, it did not lower resolution at all, in fact it bumped up framerate AND resolution on a more regular basis.
interesting tidbit is that handheld mode boasts better framerate and resolution than docked after DOOM's patch. Even though docked mode doesn't go above 720p often at all.

I guess the best trade-off would be a mode like the XBOX One X has where it disables dynamic resolution, but where you got the very substantial optimizations of version 1.2... And even then, at 1280*720 the framerate would get terrible. If the Switch in portable mode is about 1/4 of a base XBOX One and that runs below 720p much of the time and doesn't keep the 60FPS all that well... You do the math.
I had it pre-loaded, so no. The day 1 patch simply added multiplayer as a required download and offered some bug fixes. I have the cartridge so I can play it completely unpatched on my girlfriends Switch, exactly as it was day 1. I can verify it did not have higher resolutions. You must be mistaken.I'm talking about Doom's day 1 update. Iirc, someone was posting unpatched screens and they were higher resolution but performance was poor.
I don't think resolution is higher undocked in Doom post update. I thought docked was hanging around a lot closer to 720p now. Framerate was always superior undocked.
I bought a physical copy last night and was playing on 1.0 before it updated. I much preferred it. I was there was an option.
The update is available. Like I said before, I have the UK version, am from Germany. The update downloaded just fine. There's something not doing what it should on your end.I'm austrian and have the imported uk version. Still no update available
If you have the 1.1 update, your game looks either as smearish or more than 1.2, only with massive framerate drops in portable mode, and more smearish period in docked mode. If you have the 1.0 version, your framerate is atrocious. So no matter what, I think the update is desirable lol.Well, I just updated fortnite and several neogeo games but wolfenstein doesn't, so I guess austrians download from a seperate server.
maybe thats the reason. afair from wii(u) times we (austria and , I think, switzerland) downloaded stuff from our own server, completely independent from german servers.
pretty much like netflix. austria has some uncut movies which are lacking on netflix germany (due the strict youth "protection" laws)
edit: reading through the latest comments I'm actually pretty happy the updated didn' hit me by now.
I too prefer the okaish framerate to the smearish PQ posted above. why would they do that?
edit No2: could it be that they introduced chromatic aberration with the update? I remember that Doom on switch had it as an option in its graphics settings. "off" looked way better and sharper (at least to me)
The frame rate is hardly atrocious...not a single of the dozens of glowing reviews for the title made mention of atrocious frame rates...you really need to stop exaggerating. Even Digital foundry said it performed quite admirably. If you have the 1.1 update, your game looks either as smearish or more than 1.2, only with massive framerate drops in portable mode, and more smearish period in docked mode. They DID take issue with what a blurry game it was compared to DOOM. Maybe you shouldn't be playing a game with a targeted 30 fps if a few dips into the 20s bothers you that much.
There needs to be a decent balance between performance and aesthetics, and that balance is completely out of whack with this new update.
But as I said before, removing the motion blur would help handheld mode a lot, so hopefully there is a compromise that can make everyone somewhat satisfied.
No, I agree that the patch compromising the clarity and resolution of the game in handheld mode was an odd choice for them to make & it is a decision that I'd love to ask the the development team about. I have not yet been able to play the game docked post-patch 1.2 to see the enhancements introduced as I had primarily played Wolf 2 in handheld mode, just as I do with Doom. Seeing the patch notes emphasize resolution & performance boosts made me curious to see how the game would perform in handheld mode with the new patch and I was surprised to see the resolution downgraded -- though performance does feel smoother.Of course they are. That's my point. Before this week's patch, the frame rate was fine. The game had glowing reviews. I agree as I played it at launch and loved it.
My one complaint, and one echoed in many reviews was that wolf 2 was very blurry.
That's why this patch is confusing...instead of fixing the many complaints about resolution, they fixed frame rate (which nobody was really complaining about) at the expense of resolution...which was already getting complaints before getting worse this week.
I guess my personal feelings here are that this patch addressed a non issue, while making a known issue even more of an issue.
Am I the only one who feels this is a bit counterintuitive?
I mean, I fully agree this patch offers improved docked play. But since statistically 50% of the time (60% in Japan) the Switch is used undocked, I feel this patch would better off...not existing. Or perhaps it just needs to be vastly rebalanced for undocked mode.
My opinion.
Oh good, I thought I was the only one! I mean, its great that performance is a bit better, but with these AAA ports to Switch, equilibrium is so important, sway too far in favor of one element at the expense of another and boom, suddenly it stops being so fun to play. No, I agree that the patch compromising the clarity and resolution of the game in handheld mode was an odd choice for them to make & it is a decision that I'd love to ask the the development team about. The resolution is not downgraded in portable mode compared to 1.1. I don't know why people are getting that impression. In many occasions its even a bit higher. However, since the framerate in portable mode was quite bad in demanding scenes, the patch fixes that instead and doesn't have room for resolution. NateDrake's video very clearly showed a massive resolution disparity in undocked mode between before and after 1.2 update. Even scenes which are not taxing have lost clarity. Objects where you could see the bump mapping very clearly pre-patch are just a blurry texture now. And that includes things that are only inches from Billy's face...like his sleeve. The resolution is not downgraded in portable mode compared to 1.1. Once you play in docked mode you'll be surprised, I'd suggest taking a look at "New Orleans: Containment Wall district". Probably the courthouse scene too. You'll be very surprised.

Ah yes ok!Things like this make me very curious about how Doom Eternal will look and run given it's seemingly being developed with the Switch in mind, versus an after the fact port.
His comparison video was 1.0 vs 1.2, the above poster is talking about the difference between 1.1 and 1.2.
Eurogamer interview from the Quakecon reveal. That's a literal quote "with Switch in mind" but they don't say any more than that. Too lazy to google the link now.Ah yes ok!
And I am also curious how DOOM Eternal will look on Switch. Do you have a link to it being developed with Switch in mind? I haven't heard that. I know Panic Button are involved in the Switch version from very early in development, which means there will be a crazy degree more optimization than DOOM/Wolf 2 got, but as far as I know it is being designed as AAA, and they aren't making any Switch specific compromises.

But that comparison is made between version 1.0, which is unfinished, barely anyone played, and runs at 10-15 frames per second by the video, and the new version.NateDrake's video very clearly showed a massive resolution disparity in undocked mode between before and after 1.2 update. Yes I realized my mistake there. But that comparison is made between version 1.0, which is unfinished, barely anyone played, and runs at 10-15 frames per second by the video, and the new version. The version that everyone played and that Digital Foundry analyzed is 1.1, and version 1.2 always runs at an equal or higher resolution than that.
If you have played the game while docked before, I'd recommend you check it out again. Look at New York, or the courthouse scene, or New Orleans, or Mesquite, or the other super low res scenes, and you'll see a substantial improvement in sharpness.
There's still a huge improvement, imo, even if it's blurry, the framerate is much more stable now.Yes I realized my mistake there.
And I payed it docked to have a look-see, much improved. Sadly I play handheld pretty much exclusively.
It's good that they are updating and improving it, but no amount of patches is going to make it a good game.
Why should they made it worse with a patch? It can't be good because its already a fantastic game.
Many backlash for this game came from ultra-righties, because, among other things, Ku Klux bashing and a black female character.
