This is the most forgettable looking thing I've ever seen. I've already forgotten it.

Mario 64 moment tho

I think the 'Mario 64' moment is putting unnecessary expectations on it, but Robot Rescue is awesome. If it were a regular 3D platformer then yeah, nothing about it stands out. As a VR experience though, the game comes alive in ways you can't possibly understand unless you play it. Interestingly enough, when I first played this game my immediate thought was 'wow, imagine Mario, Donkey Kong, Rayman etc in this format'.

Commercially, it probabaly won't be VR's Mario 64 moment, but in terms of innovative game design leveraged by new forms of input, it seems spot-on based on all the follow-up tweets and scene descriptions.

As has been the case for the past 2.5 years, I will continue to appreciate the evolution of gaming regardless of how small a commercial impact it can make due to price and hassle. When headsets become cheaper and streamlined, everyone else can play catch-up.

VR Mario 64 moment will happen once we have full hands awareness in games, which means 10 fingers tracking. Not because you can turn your head around in a platformer.
Robo Recall kinda had this going a little bit, with the hands awareness and interaction with stuff around you. But it still doesn't feel like it since your fingers have 2 possible possible and only your thumb and index are tracked, in a clever way but still not a fully convincing one.

I've been skipping over this game's trailers because I always read them first as "Astro Boy" but then realize I misread and scroll past.

Quite surprised at how many people on a gaming forum don't actually know the context behind the "Super Mario 64 moment".

That is indeed a thing...?

You said it "doesn't seem to be enhanced by VR in any meaningful way from a gameplay perspective."

Based on the little information we have, it absolutely is. You couldn't do a lot of what this game is doing without VR. I'd be interested in you articulating some of your ideas on how VR could be used to enhance platforming gameplay that Japan Studio apparently whiffed on.

This makes sense, the original level back when psvr came out was a pretty special experience, with pretty universal acclaim and a lot of demand for a full game

Yes, of course. See below:
That's not an elaboration.
Could you point to the part where I disputed this being a great or phenomenal game?
I've played VR and I've seen footage of the game. I can see this game being something special.
Doesn't mean it's a Mario 64 moment though. I highly doubt we will get something like that ever again.
I really hope your next answer isn't as lazy as your last.
So again, what do you mean with "attitude"?

Headbutting a sign doesn't seem to me to be equivalent to revolutionizing the 3D gaming landscape. VR is by itself an enhancement to any existing game but this is just... another decent looking VR platformer not a watershed moment for the VR industry and gaming as a whole.

Something like independent finger tracking (ex Vive knuckles), eye tracking (hardware exists but isn't integrated yet), and software libraries to automatically utilize these kinds of features are something that would be much bigger. If I could reach down and wrap my fingers around that bot and plop him on another platform that could open up some interesting gameplay opportunities while massively increasing immersion.

This is going to end up being like Gravity Rush where a game designed and developed primarily around gameplay mechanics (a trait many associate with Nintendo and not Sony, but Japan Studio has historically focused on outside of Fumito Ueda-directed titles) with an incredible attention to gameplay feel will be overlooked due to the platform it's on not resonating with enough of its target audience.

At the very least, I hope it'll end up being a cult classic from what I've seen. The game will deserve a lot more than it gets.

The demo I played at PAX was enough to make me lock in a preorder. The game will be great and yeah it did give me the feeling I got when playing Mario 64 the first time.

I gotta say, when I read the "Mario 64 Moment" tagline I was expecting something industry shaking, not *literal* Mario 64.

That said, it does look fun.

It seems to me that the guy had some short of VR epiphany with this game... I had my "Mario 64" moment multiple times with multiple games - as in it was the freshest, most immersive experience I had since I was a kid playing SM64 back in 1996. It wasn't one game though, it was the tech itself.

The thread is going as expected I guess.

Anyway, since playing the Demo Missiom you could see they may into something good because even as short as it was, it was pretty damn fun

People are missing the point so hard, this thread is super embarrassing.
That's sad... Game looks great. I wonder how many of these comments are from people who don't even own a vr system
If the guy just made his actually elaborate, well put points without using that dumb hyperbole beforehand then this thread would have gone differently for sure.
Arrogant Nintendo fans....
Lmao.

Full room tracking on console-level VR with wireless headsets and adaptive controller options is what would constitute as the "Mario 64" of VR because you need the tech to be compliant to deliver the dream. Working at Zero Latency has afforded me the chance to see what full warehouse level VR scaling is like and you don't even need weapons for some wow moments. VR just delivers realism when given the tools, just need that VR to be convincing.

This is not. Not yet.

He triggered the wrong fanbase.

Sadly, I won't play it, because I don't have a VR and likely never will.

Whether or not this is the Mario 64 moment of VR, all this press and people talking about Astro Bot has made me so excited. The game looks so adorable and has some possibly clever ideas that I hadn't seen yet. I"m grabbing this 100%.

The game looks great, no doubt about it.

I guess it's my bad, I let my imagination run wild with expectations after the vague tease.
