I imagine there will be a resounding sigh of disappointment throughout the base, but the game will hopefully bring good tidings during its release season and smooth things out. I must admit the newcomer announcements and count are quite disappointing for me, as I dislike pretty much all that came out; still, it's imperative one realizes some have been waiting for those very ones since Dairantō Smash Brothers X...
At this point, I'm only really expecting 1-2 more unique newcomers (Incineroar & maybe the Square Enix rep) & 1-2 more echoes (Ken & maybe Shadow) at launch.
Unfortunately Dante will not be making it into this game, I met him and we had a chat in game. (this just happened lol)

DLC? Probably. Base game? Almost certainly not. The roster would have been largely set in stone by mid 2016.
ARMS presumably was in development in 2016, though, considering it came out in 2017?
The 3ds is probably the only thing that held Inklings back as DLC. That or Sakurai wanted them to be front and center for Ultimate.

I don't think we'll get an ARMS character. The game didn't really make an impact and there's only one game.

Some guy on Twitter who made some interesting posts before E3 and before Isabelle was revealed posted that Incineroar, Steve, Ken and Shadow are the final 4 fighters, and Geno is a bonus gift for Nintendo online subscribers.

Realistically, this guy is piggybacking off of current rumors and added the little bit about Geno there. Maybe he's legit but I'm not so sure.

Most of these are piggybacking old rumors. The only particular one is Isabelle with the Animal Crossing announcement but... given how people constantly predict a character announcement with a game announcement alongside, it's not hard to guess at all. Isabelle was somewhat expected anyways. It can be just a lucky guess.

I legit would feel bad for banjo fans, but they had to know how unlikely he was.
To be honest, Steve in Smash on the base roster would probably make Banjo a potential DLC character.
Why feel bad? It means Steve in the base game and Banjo as DLC.
Because that's the Microsoft character Microsoft and Sakurai knows we want and they'll make a ton of money from having them as DLC.
Yea, but I think Phil outright saying he would want banjo in makes it unlikely. If he was going to be, he wouldn't say anything.
