If you have a game collection that is big enough to insure, you have too many video games. Sell them or donate to charity please.

That, and make sure you backup/rip everything you can.

Feel real bad for the guy in the OP, a small fire a year ago still leaves me a bit rattled. Something at that scale is horrifying.

Been thinking of doing that.
I can't imagine a house fire happening in my house.
It's probably one of the worst things someone could experience.

No one around here will insure something like that for the entry price lower than buying an entire second set of copies.

That's horrible. I'd be gutted if that happened to my collection.

This makes no sense. If you have a large collection then you should then sell said collection or donate it? Why?

You're right! My wife collects sugar packs for coffee and has a buttload of them, like 20 "books" full (i dont know whatelse to call them). She has to donate them all charity!
I'm gonna tell her PatMan said so! Collecting stuff is not allowed!

isnt that the point of collections? giving away stuff?
like, i want to collect mugs, so i gift everyone but myself with them. its what's inside your heart that counts.

That hurts to look at.

That like, the opposite of a collection. A collection is a personal thing. I collect videogames. I'm not running a charity here. I spend my hard-earned money on things I want to own. I don't earn money to just give it away, I'd just as well just give away random amounts of money. I'd rather have a rare videogame than have the cash on my bank. It's for me to keep; to collect.

How can you own a collection of mugs if you're donating instead of collecting? I'd wager the recipients would much rather just have the cash.

Most Homeowners Insurance policies include substantial contents coverage by default. The biggest issue is having proper documentation of what you have in the house and its value. It's smart to take pictures of everything in case something like this happens.

If you rent rather than own you can get Renter's insurance for quite cheap overall.

Do people really not have home owners insurance? Seems crazy to own a house without any. But I wonder if they will pay out market value if you have some really rare games? I guess it will depend on the type of insurance coverage you have, ie, actual cash value or replacement cost value.

But for any collection, you really need good pictures and also saving any documentation or making spreadsheets can help for future insurance purposes. For my anime collection, I used DVD profiler and inputted where I bought it from and how much. But now that I'm no longer into anime, I've been slowly selling it off.

I feel bad for the guy. I guess depending on how damaged the rest of the structure was this wouldn't be covered by normal home owner's insurance? I know certain special items require a rider, I guess this would be one of those situations. That really sucks.

How would you ensure a collection anyway?

Wait, I'm so confused here. Your wife collects sugar packets? Why? Do they have different designs on them?

Yep, insurance is a life saver, you always take it for granted until the day you need to claim it.

Make sure you have photographs of your collection for your homeowners or tenant policy. Keep the pictures up to date and host them in multiple places - NOT physically because of fire obviously.

Lol you fucking wish.

I could live like a year or two without working by selling half of it. This thing is a great back up in case I end up in a financial hole. I don't want to sell it of course, but it's a nice back up still.

Everything is catalogued and pictures are taken.

Unfortunately insurances don't typically cover those things, you need a special, dedicated one on top of your existing house insurance.

I'm covered for 25k but I know I will never be able to replace half of it if something happens.

I'm way too sceptical of insurance companies and their ability to weasel out of paying up to ever take out insurance on anything. Thankfully I don't have a whole lot of stuff.

Wonder if insurances would bother estimate the value of a videogame collection. Even personally I wouldn't know where to start about getting an idea about how much my (relatively small) collection is worth.

Personally I've always viewed collecting things as a vice. If you are actually using them regularly, it's one thing, but if you are collecting just to put it on a shelf, it's kind of a grotesque representation of our cultural obsession with consumerism and material wealth. It's not to say I've never collected anything, but when I do I tend to feel more shame over it than pride.

That is such a weird stance. How is it consumerism if I buy physical vinyl LP's and regularly listen to them? Yes, since I don't throw them in the garbage or sell them on I am collecting them. Doesn't mean it is bad or a sign of consumerism. On the contrary I feel like services like Spotify or Netflix lead to consumerism because any sense for the value of music/movies/TV shows get lost if you don't actually associate any value with them and just listen to whatever.

I know that's gotta be a bad feeling, sad to see. That's one reason I'm glad I only buy games digitally now.
