Yes, my SO despises gaming so much I can only play when I'm alone. But browsing is still allowed!

Personally, if my SO loved me, she wouldn't care if I did what I enjoyed doing, as long as there's some balance.

Luckily my wife actually enjoys a few games, like Detroit:BH, Uncharted, and the Telltale games to name a few.

I have two young children. I have maybe an hour to an hour and a half a night and that's often time spent doing something with the SO. Every other day I get up at 4am when it's my turn to wake up with the 1 year old. Sometimes he sleeps till 5:40 and I get almost two hours to myself to play something. Sometimes he wakes up at 4:30am though. So I can only play a few minutes here and there, but I can go on forums or watch Let's Plays a lot more intermittently in short bursts of free time. I don't watch streams specifically for the above reason. I thought we decided as a species that On Demand Entertainment was the future. The idea that I need to log onto Twitch at this time window to watch a stream is just not going to happen.

Literally, only because Smash isn't out yet. I'm 100% convinced that once Smash comes out, I'll be disconnected from Reddit and ResetEra and stuff like that. The hype is real, but I'll be playing that for hundreds of hours instead of talking about it.

Not big on watching streams, but gaming related video content, podcasts and time on Era well outpaces my actual gaming time.

Because I can listen to 3+ hour podcasts while driving and watch a quick 10 min video while I eat breakfast at work.

Yes.
I'm mostly interested in the sales, behind the scenes, how a game is received and the industry overall.
This year my playtime, which wasn't huge to begin with, fell off a cliff and I only managed to finish one game : Celeste
I bought a couple others but just can't motivate myself to just... play them, at this point for all intent and purpose I'm mostly playing multiplayers games casually with friends once in a while, but at the same time I've never known better about games and everything around it than today which is... kinda funny.

I'm 100% not interested in watching streams however so I can't participate in that poll

Currently yes I talk more about games than playing them. I'm too damn busy to play anything due to work and extra reports I have to finish.

Come the middle of December and I'll be free to catch up on everything.

I see it as two separate hobbies op.

I love playing games of course, and particualrly when a big game comes out (recent examples: GoW, BotW and Oddysey) or other games that take over (fortnite, smash most likely) I'll do little else

But I also love the punditry - the commentary and speculation. When switch was about to be announced (November two years ago) or every direct, or around E3, I spend more time on Era than I do actually playing.

So...yeah. Depends. But I love them both differently. I imagine it's like someone who loves playing soccer and watching it - they are two related hobbies that I enjoy in totally different ways.

I talk video games during the work day, play games at night

So I technically talk more but I suspect I play a lot more than a lot of folks here

Playing games in general but in the past few weeks definitely reading and watching, I rarely ever watch streams though. I get most video content through regular youtube videos.

I use to sit and read Era/GAF way too much but now I've just chosen to ignore almost everything in favour of playing games. Plus it just isn't healthy how toxic here can get at times so one should definitely breaknit up with games.

I read era/ game news stuff way more than playing games... It's something I've been trying to rectify as of late

I play way more than watch streams, not a fan at all. But I do hang around at ERA way too much, about half of it is on Etcetera side though. I also watch podcasts and other gaming related media, but not streams. So at this moment in life I do spend less time playing games than the other stuff. All that is needed for that to flip around is me getting hooked into another multiplayer game. Games are also probably my favorite topic to discuss outside internet too.

It varies. When I have time and energy to play, be it 2D or VR, I'll play. However, lately I've been cramming through long hours at work and so my downtime (lunch breaks, rendering breaks, etc.) I will be on here, like right now!

Also have friends both IRL and internet acquaintances (including Era folks) who stream so I'll drop by and lurk in there to support, chat when able.

Question should have been:
Be honest:do u spend more time discussing games and watching streams/gameplay than working?
I totally work more than spending time here...

Actual gaming 99% of the time. Don't watch streams, do read and post a bit here but that's only when I'm at work at can't actually game.

Nah, at least not any more. I've never been into watching streams.

Forums I used to be pretty addicted too and definitely had too many years where I spent more time talking about games online than playing them. I've gotten over that the past few years though. The online gaming community is just too hostile to spend that much time with, plus it just felt lame spending so much time talking to randoms online after I hit my mid 30s (not that it wasn't lame before).

Now I've cut back and just make brief visits to a few forums once or twice a day most days. Occasionally I'll to more than that if I'm procrastinating work or have a day with a bunch of meetings and too short of time in between them to get any substantive work done.

I would split up watching streams from discussing games

I post to ERA probably as much as I game but I seldom watch streams

It depends on how much work I have to do that month. When I have a lot of studying or work to to, I am mostly a hobbyist because it is hard for me to multitask when playing games. When I have fewer responsibilities I do the opposite and only play games ignoring the hobbyist aspect

Yup. I browse Era while at work or out and about. And when I get home and sometimes don't wanna game, I'll watch some streams, usually esports.

Definitely ERA. I work 70 hrs a week and I can browse at work, but gaming is a little more challenging. Lucky if I get in 2-3 hours a week honestly

Not really, I like play them more. I'll admit it, I do watch a lot of videos about people talking and analyzing video games.
I learned my lesson to avoid playthoughs/spoilers like plague after finally playing games like Bioshock and KOTOR only to remember that I already knew their big twists -_-

Its like watching soccer. Anyone could go outside and kick a ball but a lot of people prefer to watch other people play.
I'd be curious to know if the same format is used in any other countries, but there's a show on TV here that is about watching other people watch TV. Regular people just watching regular programming and commenting on it like they normally would, even without the cameras. It's heavily edited though and each episode features many families or friends.

I listen to streams while I play around 40% of the games I play. (Warcraft 3, Path of Exile, most roguelikes.)

Yeah I talk a lot more than I play. I play a lot of Fortnite but very little else.

I'm glad about half of you have the time for more gaming than reading/talking/watching though.

Currently, I definitely talk about and watch games more than I play. It varies though. Right now I'm a little apathetic about playing games despite knowing my current game is great and enjoying the time I do play it.

I would say I spend an almost equal amount doing both, actually. I talk with my friends on discord about games a lot, and I usually watch streams or have them on in the background while I'm playing certain games.

This year... maybe I discussed and watched video games more than playing.

It's been a fairly poor year for me. My main genre is single player shooters. Third or first person.

So far the only game that I've bought that fits in that genre is Tomb Raider. Nine months into the year. Needless to say I've been surviving on replays from previous years. The good news is that next year looks like a bonanza for me.

Playing games by far - I rarely watch streams (and usually just Giant Bomb stuff) and although I probably discuss games more than I should it's still a small fraction of my overall gaming time.

I don't have enough time nor disposable income (nor much interest either tbh) anymore to play all the new big games, and I find replaying games difficult these days too (my interest just fizzles out halfway) so yeah...I think I spend more time answering mundane questions here and reading opinions on things. I don't watch streams though, I get too frustrated the player isn't doing exactly what I would do.
