Semi-correct. This quote is what people claim being up in arms about. My cynical attitude suggests a light version of that blood sports conspiracy: a statistically significant portion of people in the world, this thread included, want to be in arms about something, and that's just an excuse.
People who used that kind of logic included echoes (I remember people predicting the roster to have a similar breakdown to Melee's: 8 unique and 6 echo). That isn't unreasonable.
The majority of people here are expecting another 3 newcomers max. Which isn't all that unrealistic given the number of returning veterans and echo fighters.
It's wise in the same way that it's wise to expect nothing from anything. In that it's unfounded pessimism.
People who said it would pass 12 included echoes, sure if someone wants to cherry pick they could probably find one or two users saying we will get more than 12 unique newcomers. I just don't like it when people straight up lie to prove a point.

this is the best argument because i cannot live in a world where the final character is numerically "69" and sakurai will have to say, constantly "69 total characters, we've worked really hard to reach 69 characters over the years. While it's 69, if you include echoes, its xx" and so on

Especially with how Sakurai seems much more considerate of characters people may want. Even if Box Theory is real maybe the final character is Banjo Kazooie

They could separate the characters you fight by game (round 1 would be 64's OG 12), or make it so you can save and come back later in the rest area.
