My personal interpretation is that #TeamMoreThan2 will get dissapointed
This is pretty much the only thing currently keeping me attached to the speculation, if I'd seen here in Diddy's final smash or an AT by now I could just happily wait for the release knowing that I'm pretty cool with the newcomers.
Until then I must twist in the wind, she COULD still be there, even If I no longer expect it.
No more newcomers. Just two months of nothing until launch. Any missing features have been turned into DLC out of spite.
Also worth noting that Skull Kid was the very first assist trophy to be revealed for Smash 4 and now he's still nowhere to be seen about 2 and a half months before release.
Sakurai even had to clarify he wasn't a playable fighter knowing his status as a Zelda icon and popularity.
Combine this with the fact that:
-Majora's Mask 3D released while Sakurai was drafting out his picks for Ultimate
-The downright suspicious absence of Skull Kid in the Moon AT like you said
-Skull Kid's model is already finished and just needs to be polished up like Dark Samus's (who also had a MIA assist trophy in Ultimate)
-Music Theory is Dead™
-Young Link's final smash still not being shown (could possibly be a Skull Kid connection with Fierce Diety)
-Ramblin' Mushroom AT from Earthbound replacing one of Skull Kid's AT gimmicks with reversing controls
It's looking good skull fans with Halloween approaching.
They're only adding another 2 or 3 new characters and one of them will be Skull Kid? I just don't see it, specially if one of them will still be a Pokemon. Either the music theory is wrong and Incineroar/whoever is already taking a space, or the music theory is right and Skull Kid is deconfirmed anyway.

I mean the two main points against this is that there's alot of final smashes that haven't been revealed yet so it isn't that weird Young Link's also isn't here. The biggest counter argument is that Music Theory isn't dead and we're just not getting a Pokemon newcomer.
You completely missed the point. It's not his absence, it's that plus the fact that we got an additional Majora's Mask AT.
Majora's Mask is a single Zelda game released 20 years ago, it having two ATs alone (when we haven't even seen a BotW or ALBW one, mind you) would be strange.
Because of that I think either Skull Kid is cut entirely or he's playable. Given Majora's Mask 3D being the hottest Zelda thing around the time the roster for Ultimate was decided, I will go with the latter for now.

The thing about box theory is that it's literally just ONE unannounced newcomer and Ken (Ken is on the other side of the box with ryu)

MM3D was a bigger deal with far more changes, it was something people had been requesting ever since OoT3DTwilight Princess HD was announced and coming out the same time the roster was being drafted.
I genuinely love the logic at play here. I don't understand it at all, but it makes my mind spin with all the things sakurai takes note of when designing a character. It's hilarious.

I'm not "in denial" for not believing a mockup of a box has told us literally everything we need to know about the remainder of the Smash Bros content
Honestly the only reason to doubt the Box Theory before was that it didn't leave room for Shadow, and Verge contradicted it. Now we know that Shadow could be a semi-clone and Verge is a fraud, so there's no real reason not to believe the box theory.

MM being considered the hot new Zelda despite being a remake when BotW was known about for years (and at one point had 2015 as the scheduled release date) is weird to me, particularly given that we've seen plenty of BotW-oriented content (Link overhaul, new stage, Kirby transformation) while Young Link thus far is almost entirely OoT-derived

Eh not really. Both games got a fair bit of fanfare and were released closer to announcement. They both even had special editions with MM having a Skull Kid figure and TP having a Wolf Link and Midna Amiibo.
I'm not sure what Skull Kid can do that Midna also can't do. Not to mention Midna had a more defined kit even in combat where Skull Kid kind of just... laughs I guess
Doubtful he did that much better than Midna in the Ballot as neither seemed to headline much even within the Smash community
Also doubtful and doesn't feel like something that Sakurai would decide to do. It was clear Isabelle was going to be big for Animal Crossing even back in 2015. I don't even think Skull Kids would even appear in Breath of the Wild.
Issac was cut because he's been irrelevant for a while now. He's nowhere close to Majora's Mask fame either.

The idea is each franchise with a character gets a song, plus some extra unaffiliated ones
New series only get the song of a non-echo newcomer
So far, only one song per franchise has been posted on the smash website, with each unique newcomer has having a song posted.
Pokémon got a song posted last night, and since there's only one song per franchise, we aren't getting a Pokémon newcomer because that would mean two songs for Pokémon.
A Newcomer is paired with a new song on the blog and the time between E3 reveal and release makes it seem unlikely we would get duplicates.
We got K Rool, Simon, and Isabelle with new songs on the blog following their reveal and it's especially important with Isabelle because the AC song got delayed with her.
This would also mean that a Pokemon, Skull Kid, and Bandana Dee probably might not make the roster due to them wanting to reveal the character with the song.
Well... Isaac, comparatively, would be a lovely contribution to the Smash universe. Not only would it be a nod to those who enjoy a little bit of RPG essence, it would give a good few within the fairytale-believing fanbase a bit of hope as far as the net code and gameplay specifications, given the amount of precision point accuracy they would have to assign to his skill move-set. I would, hence, much rather observe this sort of introduction than some of the names I have been seeing around here, like Incineroar(?) who I truly do not believe belongs in the Smash Universe.
Of course, this is simply my opinion on the matter. The game aspects are what truly make this game so remarkable, and excellent in its fame!

It feels like people slam the possibilty of Incineroar not being in the game at even the smallest hint of doubt
I get that Pokemon are likely but damn
