You mean a demastered version of the game with Master System graphics ? :) Well, it wouldn't work to have a pixel 8-Bit representation of the game because the gameplay features are too advanced, but we have other surprises in the game :)
Unfortunately we can't make a VITA version because the game has specs that require much more RAM than the VITA has available.

Nice to hear, thank you!

Oh wow, great to see you come up on here Thomas. The thread got real busy overnight.

GhostTrick nice to see you made it over here. I haven't forgot about you wanting my pc copy if you're still not getting a console version.

Hey, you guys did a really good job with the new version of pig-man here! But one thing, in his idle stance he seems a bit too... wide eyed (?). It's not really a problem with his other animations; he looks perfect in the "crouching" state. I did a rough mock-up here using a bit of his crouching face on the idle stance.

Thanks for the feedback, Lori! Well we preferred to exaggerate his eye-play during the animation as it supports his agile combat movements and bumpy running. The character preview images aren't really connected to the actual IDLE animations in the game. The pig for example will pull out a cigarette and smoke.

Amazing to see you on Era Thomas! Monster Boy looks unbelievably promising and your team's dedication to the game is a sight to behold.

Any word on the release date yet? Or is it still TBA 2018?

I've been following this game since it was first revealed, and it looks better and better everytime new media is released.

Now I'm just patiently waiting for release!

Thanks a lot! We don't have a release date yet, it's still TBA 2018. But things get interesting, we'll have something cool to announce this Winter.

Looking forward to this!

I think I noticed some updates to the stained-glass windows in the town section on one of the newest previews - Was original "caveman" Wonder Boy added in as well as the "Monster World II" transformations?

I played the demo at Gamescom and was pleasantly surprised. At a glance the art style is a disappointment compared to Wonder Boy, but once you get into the game, these visuals do have their own charms. The updated sprite animations can only help with that.

After enjoying Wonder Boy so much, I'm definitely looking forward to this as something to scratch that same itch.

Added to the windows. None of those characters or transformations are in the game as far as we know. Though, I saw a Pepelogoo talking about a green haired girl in one of the demo videos.

Just bought Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, I liked it despite that it has an overly old-school design that can be obtuse at times. Does this game follow the same formula?

This might sound a little silly but I've always been curious about the alcohol references in this game, are they still there, and what effect could they have on the age rating of the game?

That's the one!

I always loved seeing the callback references to the earlier games in each of the Monster World series.

If I recall, the final boss of Monster's Lair was a possessed version of one of the earlier WonderBoys (Bock?)
And I think Monster World IV had a little mention about the WonderBoy from Monster World III (Shion?) disappearing mysteriously down a hole that appeared near his house after he defeated the Bio-Meka. (Though my memory is a little fuzzy)

I wonder if there'll be any story references to these original heroes in this version?

I noticed earlier that the maze in the sewer section in the demo was a direct homage in terms of layout to the maze castle in the earlier games, which is neat.
I wonder if we'll see the "Welcome to Monster World" area again that cropped up a couple of times, verbatim, in the old games.

I'm super confused,
I thought this game was already out since I saw it posted in gaf like 4 months ago.

Also, I remember blonde kid from the arcade version, I don't remember him transforming into anything.
And Why am I thinking of adventure island and wonder boy?

You're confused because it has always been confusing.

Sega owned the rights to the Wonder Boy trademark while Westone owned the copyrights to each game.

That's how we ended up with Wonder Boy, Monster Land, Monster World, Adventure Island, Dynastic Hero, Dragon's Curse, Bikkuriman World, Saiyūki World plus the Brazilian Monica reskins. They're all essentially the same thing.

I mean they released a game titled Wonder Boy V: Monster World III.

Yes. That's the title of a single game.

It's always been confusing.

Now to add to the confusion we have the recently released remake of Wonder Boy III The Dragon's Trap AND the newly created Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom.

I actually think it's kind of charming that the recent releases continue the tradition of confusion in the fragmented Wonder Boy/Monster World universe.

So what does the bee logo company have anything to do with what you said (sunsoft )? Don't they own adventure island. The same character is also in bomberman for the saturn, fun fact.

That's Hudson, not Sunsoft. And yeah, they made Adventure Island, which started off as an NES conversion of Wonder Boy but continued on into its own series. My understanding of the whole situation is that Westone owned the game design and code while various other companies owned the titles and character designs. You can see even as far as Monster World IV, the last one from Sega, that they had to mention Westone on the title screen.

Hudson Soft acquired the rights from Westone, known as Escape at the time. They also had the rights to the Turbo Graphx 16 releases where they changed the titles and characters to further confuse things. Konami absorbed Hudson Soft and now holds the rights to the Adventure Island series.

Edit:
Hudson Soft also helped develop the Turbo Graphx with NEC and also created the Bomberman series which would explain those connections.

Monster Boy is a new game in the series so we have a lot of freedom in design and gameplay. Expect a more modern approach to the Wonder Boy formula with dynamic gameplay, lots of variety + quality of life improvements. Many ideas in it! :)

You're more than welcome Thomas, and that sounds like something awesome to look forward to. Monster Boy is shaping up to be excellent and everyone's super excited for it.

Also you should get verified on here so everyone knows you're a producer on the game from FDG Entertainment.

Thanks datschge! I'll ask for the verification now :) We definitely need to do something with all the artwork that was created but I don't have any plan right now - will think about that when we completed the game.

Get verified Thomas! You're a super important person regarding Monster Boy what with you being a producer on the game. I'm sure you'll get verified in no time.

Very much looking forward to the Winter announcement regarding the release date. Super excited for any news.

I'm hoping the physical Switch release happens. At the same time as the digital release. I'm not interested in double dipping 6 months later, like with Dragon's Trap.

I love the series so much, and the recent Dragon's Trap/Curse remake was just about as perfect as could be.
I have such high hopes for this one. I have to admit that I prefer the look of the recent remake over this one, but that remake hewed very close to the original, which is nothing if not dated.
I can't wait to see what this brings to the table for the series.

Yes. That's the title of a single game.
There's a reason why those names are like that

Wonderboy V is the third game in the franchise to take place in Monster World.

The first Wonderboy took place in an unnamed land and its japanese name was just "Super Wonderboy"

Wonderboy 2 was called Super Wonderboy : Monster World

Wonderboy 3 was an arcade game taking place in Monster Land that came out before the SMS Wonderboy 3 game.

Wonderboy 3 was always Super Wonderboy : Monster World 2 (second game in the sub series)

So when the last Wonderboy game came out, it was the fifth one in the franchise and the third one in Monster World. The title makes complete sense and has nothing to do with how it was handled on non Sega hardware

This is looking really good. I love the art style. I'll probably end up getting it for my Switch.

I'm someone who knows wonder boy from the adventure island series and loved the recent "wonder boy dragon's trap", so i'm certainly interested in this. It's good to see a revival of some genres and games that to me were designed very well

I'm a big Switch fan myself, Monster Boy is a fantastic fit for this console! Looks amazing on the Switch screen and runs beautifully in native resolutions.
