Man, I played Dark Moon for almost 100h. The campaign was fantastic and playing the Scarescraper w/ my girlfriend was great fun. Hope you can spam "Help Help!" in this one too. :P

Actually, this Direct made me and my gf feel like we were on the early days of our relationship again since we'd play Dark Moon and then New Leaf pretty much back-to-back for over a year.

We don't have those kind of details yet. It does look like Next Level is still developing based on the graphics an animations though.

It would make sense since they apparently aren't the ones handling the port of the original to the 3DS.

While I don't want the Switch game to use the same structure of the sequel, I still found the sequel quite superior to the original. Fully interested in this one!

it's probably just an artistic perspective skew to make the hotel seem bigger
True. Yet if you look at it, its like 25 floors or there about. If each floor has about 3-4 rooms and there is a giant basement parking complex/hotel maintenance hallway maze, that is still a significant boost in content compared to the other games. Not that room count matters, but the defacto best thing about Dark Moon was the multiple mansion bit. And I still think the Hotel Grounds are gonna be explorable.

Still disappointed in the reveal.

Too short and just not edited well in any way. Much too soft of a reveal.

The game and footage looks fine, it's just a poor trailer and way to reveal a new game.

yea it was decent.

needed more oomph.

wasn't as bad as the Color Splash reveal, but suffered a similar issue.

Timing lines up as well, FF was released just over 2 years ago, and this has another year in the oven, more if it gets delayed. It took them 3 years to make Dark Moon as well.

Yep. They also seem to have been hiring people nonstop. I don't think they'll need a delay at all.

Nintendo's been following a certain trend with their big titles recently, where the reveal trailer is ok/good, serving mainly to introduce the game and pretty much leaving it at that, and the second (and sometimes third) trailer is a big blowout that better shows the game's identity and personality. BotW, Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, Mario Tennis Aces, SSBU all followed that trend, I'm sure Luigi, AC and Metroid Prime 4 will too. It's not a bad trend to follow either. It allowed Super Mario Odyssey to be one of the biggest games at E3 despite having been previously announced. The hype caused by that trailer with Pauline will be timeless.

Can't wait for this. I'm am just a tiny bit disappointed I won't be able to play this in 3D. Dark Moon in 3D was really neat, I don't get all the hate on that game. It was a ton of fun.

Dark Moon felt like a better game than LM1 from moment to moment, but I find myself agreeing that the designed-for-portable mission structure left it with an excessive, fragmentary guidedness that made it too much of a Metroid Fusion for people who thought of LM1 as a promising prototype for a methodical, puzzle-box answer to Metroid. And the comparison here is not accidental. While much of the furious reaction to Federation Force wondered why on earth something like that would exist, and why anyone would think it was a good idea, I always thought from day one that the best explanation for FF was Dark Moon: a case where Next Level proved they could redesign a contiguous, exploratory game around a broken-up mission structure and co-op multiplayer and not only sell it, but in what might have been a first for a western partner, sell it all over Japan (a market where Metroid has always struggled).

What gets me about both of those titles, Dark Moon and Federation Force, is that the character art was such a dramatic step down from what we knew the studio was capable of in games like the Punch-Out!! remake. I certainly hope, after LM3, that we can look back on this and blame the 3DS. But if they are indeed the ones on LM3 (which I don't think has been at all confirmed, but is a reasonable guess), that's one of the biggest question marks, and one that has not been assuaged by the little footage they have shown.

As far as LM3 goes, there's nothing I'm looking forward to more than the HD Rumble. This is a game, more than any other coming down the pipe, that has immense potential as an HD Rumble showcase. The central mechanical satisfaction of Luigi's Mansion was always the sense of a tug-of-war resistance that came from pulling against enemy movement, followed by relief and calm as the Poltergeist confirmed your capture with a pop. It's one of those games that really encourages you to lean into the tactility of the controller and apply more force than you should. (Dark Moon outright wrecked my Circle Pad.)

Guess I'll do some analysis.

1y730JH.jpg

  • First up we got Mario's hotel room judging by Mario's suitcase.
  • Looks like Mario was quite hungry for some pizza before he got captured. The boxes say "Since 1983" on them, which is of course a reference to the release date of Mario Bros.

PmBcFqW.jpg

  • Here we got Luigi creeping down a hallway on the 5th floor of the hotel between rooms 506 and 507. A ghost jumps out of a cleaning cart and spooks him.
  • There's a poster of Luigi on the wall. Below Luigi on the poster is a glowing sack with a G on it. It appears to be meant to be a wanted poster offering a reward for Luigi's capture. Looks like a placeholder image.

aQweCkr.jpg

  • Luigi in a music hall area. A ghost attacks by furling the carpet but Luigi jumps over it using the poltergust's jetpack feature.
  • There's a painting on the wall of a piano, maybe a poster for the artist featured at the music hall. if you look closely the piano appears to have a face (2 slanted eyes above the keys forming a mouth).
  • There are mens and womens restrooms on either side of the big doors. The signs above each door show are the classic bathroom figures dressed in 1930s garb.

mm2JkhQ.jpg

  • The hotel's dining hall. It has a continental buffet set up.
  • The baguette and tropical jello mold shaped like a crown remind me of Glass Joe and King Hippo.
  • The cheese wheel sits on a platter below which is a mousehole.
  • You can see the lake behind the hotel through the windows.

BUp0hoo.jpg

  • Here's the main lobby of the hotel.
  • There are posters of Toad, Luigi, Mario, and Peach with their faces crossed out. Luigi probably has to rescue the other 3.

Za9Con1.jpg

  • This appears to be an underground garage and looks more modern than the 1930s look of the rest of the hotel except for the car. The garage appears to spiral further underground beyond the giant gate.

LCzk4dk.jpg

  • The full view of the hotel. It has a lot of floors split into levels with different architectural styles.
  • The bottom floors have a strong 1930s hotel style
  • Above that we have a section where the left side has a more medieval castle look and the right side has a conservatory full of trees.
  • It's hard to make out the middle sections behind the logo. It looks like they have have a more modern look.
  • Above the logo is a level that looks to be trimmed with pink neon lights and shaped like a 1950s car fin. Reminds me of a 50s diner.
  • The top of the hotel reminds me of Ghostbusters.
The sections we've seen so far look very inspired by Disney's Tower of Terror.
Goty 2019 looks good.

I should probably go on a media blackout for this, because I think discovering the varied environments will be a big part of it. Damn, it's gonna be tough.
Yeah. I thought Next Level Games did a really good job with Dark Moon and having themed mansions. So far this looks like one giant hotel and some of the floors could be themed differently. It's not easy to do a media blackout lol.

I'm going to take a guess and say some kind of online multiplayer will be in this. Apparently, people liked the one in Dark Moon. I never tried it so I don't know. I hope they go big with the online though since it's on a console.

I don't like how this game looks. It has the same flat lighting of Tropical Freeze.

I like watching reaction videos after Nintendo Directs and so far there have been three videos with people thinking they're watching the Luigi's Mansion remake on 3DS until the LM3 title comes up. I'm NOT saying it looks like a 3DS game, but the graphics shown so far are very lackluster and I hope they improve them.

Hope it's better than the 2nd. Bit disappointed it's still static camera. Luigi's Mansion would really benefit with the ability to inspect objects and rooms for ghosts or anomalies from different angles and heights, via a 3d rotatable camera.

The whole purpose of the video was to trick people into thinking that they were watching a CGI trailer for the already-announced 3DS remake, or something related to the recent Lugi/Castlevania/Smash reveal.

They did a similar trick at the end, when people thought it was AC, but it was a Smash relveal, but then it was AC after all.

Yeah it's weird. Super hyped for LM3 for wtf was that trailer? Felt super amateur. Not the game but the literal trailer and editing. If i wasn't already on board for LM that trailer wouldn't exactly be winning me over

The GameXplain analysis was really well done. I really missed the vast majority of that. I do hope Luigi is the only playable character though.

I'm right there with you buddy. I loved the boss fights and multiple mansions compared to the original, even if the mission structure and save system was a bit backwards.

I can't wait to see more of this game.
Oh yeah, I loved going through all of the different mansions, with their different themes and gimmicks. You were always doing something new and different, which kept my interest. Admittedly, I didn't enjoy the boss battles all of that much, I felt that a lot of them lacked the personality the bosses in the first game had and quite a few of them were downright frustrating for me

I like luigis mansion but it needs more post game stuff and secrets like the recent mario games,

Like imagine if there was a optional locked door at the bottom of the mansion that you had to find a key for and it led you to a platforming stage in the mansion that was like champions road or something

Or optional vacuum that was stronger than your standard, or harder bosses in optional areas of the mansion. It needs stuff like this

In other words I want luigis Mansion to have as many secrets as hollow knight, not just simply finding your way to one main boss then it's over

The Game Explain one was fine. Though they padded it out by detailing conjecture they they didn't believe at the start and then the conjecture they thought was more likely to be true at the end. (And I agree with them. But it was extra padding.)

On the other hand, I thought Arlo's discussion was far more interesting. He goes in to the history of the series, how that compares with the trailer, then adds his own conjecture. Ironically, it's the exact same length: 27 minutes.

Personally, I thought the art style of 1 and 2 looked the same. (I never played either.) But Arlo explained to me how they are different. So I finally get it, even if I still think they look pretty much the same.

Just got off Tower of Terror at Disney World so it's pretty fitting the first thread i check was for a thread about a haunted hotel.

That "padding" was context--without it, not a whole lot of came after would make sense (and I thought we were pretty brisk with it!)

I love Arlo, but I think it's pretty clear we made two entirely different videos, so I'm not quite sure the need to compare or rank them

Seeing so many people in here hating on Dark Moon really makes me sad. :<

I have huge amounts of nostalgia and love for the LM1 (I've had this username of mine since 2005), but playing both games back to back it was easy to see how many improvements Dark Moon made over the first game. I can see people disliking the mission structure (I didn't mind it, but if I had to choose I would rather have progression being handled like it was in LM1), but that's not enough to ruin a brilliantly designed game. The devs did a really good job making each environment feel unique with interesting things to do; I think theming areas really does help make each mansion have its own identity.

Also, I really have to give props to the animation team. Luigi has never been more expressive in any other game (including his appearances on HD consoles), and everything else is just as beautifully animated. The game should've won awards in that area, no joke.

The only major flaw of Dark Moon were that most of its boss fights were pretty bad. The game kinda tricks you with that amazing first boss fight in the first mansion, but nothing else that comes afterwards even comes close.

One more thing: the multiplayer is, shockingly, one of the best things about the game. If LM3 takes anything from Dark Moon, it should be that.

I didn't get a chance to play Dark Moon, so I can't comment on the divisiveness there. But coming from the OG Luigi's Mansion, top-tier animation, lighting, attention to detail and environmental interactivity are all important to me. It looks like this game is bringing it in those regards.

I think they nailed the lighting, and that was bound to be the most important aspect of the game. Animation + lighting + physics will make the aesthetics and I think they're doing a good job.
