So, the third of this odd franchise just came out in my neck of the world. It's a comedy staring Rowan Atkinson as a spy. Apparently, this was a bit he did for some commercials in the 90s that they later made into some movies.

I'm wondering how popular these films are for my UK cousins who probably keep tabs on Atkinson more than I do. The first came out in 2003, then there was this long gap of 8 years before the next hit. Now, there's a third movie another 7 years later.

This series has weird shifts in tone. The first felt like an excuse for Atkinson to do Bean gags in a spy setting. He's a bumbling goofball that winds up being crowned king of England by the end after fighting John Malkovich. It was terrible. I gave the second film a shot, 'cause why not? I enjoyed it way more. Had a sharper tone and Atkinson changed up his character to be more competent and suave while still being humorous. Plus, Dan Kaluuya shows up as his sidekick, which was a welcome surprise.

I watched the third this past weekend and was disappointed to find it was closer in tone to the first installment than the second. JE is back to being a mostly incompetent idiot after the first 20 minutes where he's a cool school teacher. If you're gonna watch any of these, just stick to the second. They're barely related to each other that each one feels like a reboot of sorts.

Does anyone else know about this weird franchise?

I mean yeah it's not that obscure. Swede here and growing up I recall many people having seen the first of them. It's alright, I thought it was funny at the time.

I'm from the UK and the first movie is pretty nostalgic for me, I remember it being well-loved at the time too. Can't say I really saw any reaction to the second. Maybe that's why they shifted it back in tone?

I'll probably check out the second now though if it's genuinely good.

I found the first one to be one of the funniest films I had ever seen when it first came out.

Granted, I was 10, but it still hit well.

Genuine is a strong word. More like a good diversion. Especially coming off that dull first one.

Same I liked the first one as a kid but had zero interest seeing the second or now the third

I saw the first one and the only thing I remember is somebody's ass being shown during the film and it being scorched into my head as a kid.

Never saw the sequels.

I've seen 1 and 2 and I was surprised by how different the 2nd one is compared to the first one. Like it's not just a sequel it's the jokes and athmosphere changed like going from one episode of Darkwing Duck to a different parody. It was strange but I liked it. I'm down for a third movie.

First one was funny, second one wasn't as good. I'll give the third one a shot if I'm bored and have nothing better to do, provided Bough is back

I watched the first one, it's okay but really forgettable and I only partially watched the second one but didn't really feel compelled to go out of my way to watch it from the start.

I have no desire to watch the third one as Rowan Atkinson can pretty much do one after he defended Boris's racist joke.

They're alright if you have nothing to watch. Haven't seen the new one yet

Came into this thread to make a "what sequel?" Joke.

Didn't realise there was even a third...

I've seen the first two. They're okay but not Atkinson's best work by any means, it's funny he's mostly known, at least internationally, for playing goofballs like Mr. Bean and Johnny English but his best characters are the more intellectual, aloof ones like Blackadder and some of his stage creations.

I've never actually seen the films... but rather enjoyed the classic adverts,

I liked the first one. It was really dumb, ripped off Escape from New York and had John Malkovich with the worst French accent ever. The sequel wasn't quite as good but I can't even remember it that well so maybe it was worse than I think. I think Gillian Anderson was in it?

Either way I'll watch the third one just because it's Rowan Atkinson and that guy earned enough good will with Blackadder that I'll watch just about anything he's in. Except Never Say Never Again. He hasn't earned that much good will.

Haven't seen any of them but they must sell well enough if there's three now...

Rowan Atkinson exists in such a weird space for me... Like he has all that cache from doing genuinely classic comedies 20 years ago like Blackadder and Mr Bean, but then he's done a lot more low-brow stuff like this as well (no offence to these films). I feel like he drifts massively between a Stephen Fry-level national treasure and a bit of an embarrassment like Ricky Gervais or something.

Great films. I personally feel Johnny English 2 is the sharper of the two films, but it suffers a little bit from a lack of Ben Miller (Speaking of which, not enough people have seen his magnum opus, Razzle Dazzle.) I think that a huge reason why Johnny English 2 is so good is the writing, and that's the domain of William Davies, who has co-written some pretty good Dreamworks stuff in addition to Johnny English 2. JE2's gags are great, and it's in a lot of ways a very confident and smart movie.

"Don't give up on us baby..."

"He went to Eton."

The sort of parody of the Lie To Me microexpressions still cracks me up.

Also the mind control scene is a thing of beauty.

I am planning on seeing JE3 in the near future, but it is a shame to hear it might have lost the second film's wit.

I think the first was pretty popular and I remember going to the cinema to see it. I've never bothered watching the second one though (I may have seen about 5 minutes on tv at some point, but it didn't hold my attention). I've barely heard anything about the new one and it seems so random to release it this year.

You have a tattoo on your right buttock that says "Jesus is coming, look busy"!

These movies are so dumb but I love them to death.

Blackadder is still the king, pun intended.

They're dumb movies but enjoyable dumb movies. I saw both films in the theater with my family and had a blast. Will definitely see the third one. I'm surprised they made a third one; it felt like that boat has sailed.

Loved the first film as a kid, hated the second. Though I really couldn't believe it got a sequel at all so that's something at least!
Third one looks good, glad it's going back to its sillier roots and glad that they brought Ben Miller back. I'm not gonna go see it on principle (Atkinson defending Boris Johnson's burka comments soured me on him), but I hope it's better than Reborn at least.

I've watched the first one a couple of times on DVD, it was pretty funny here and there even though the plot makes no sense. Only seen the 2nd one once in theater and thought it was okay. I was bummed out they didn't put A Man for All Seasons, that should be the main theme man! I'll probably watch the 3rd just cause I like Rowan Atkinson and Mr. Bean.

I love the first Johnny English, hated the 2nd... and I wanna check out this third one because it may seem more in line with the first movie
