Tinder testing option to ensure women can choose to make the first move

The dating app currently works by matching two people when each has swiped right on the other. At that point, either one of them can send a message to the other.

With the 'My Move' feature, women can change the app's settings so that only they can begin a conversation with matches.

Reuters reports that Tinder confirmed a test in India, with plans to roll it out worldwide if all goes well.

Tinder has been testing the function in India for several months and plans to spread it worldwide if the full rollout proves successful […]

[The company] told Reuters the function had been pioneered in India because of Tinder's need to attract more women to the app by making them feel more comfortable and secure.

"We're a platform based on mutual respect, consent, and choice. [Users] can shape their own destiny, connect with people they feel comfortable with and at all points of time, feel in control. Our users have the autonomy, especially women have the autonomy, on how to be engaged, to be empowered, to control their experience.

I'm curious to see what happens after 5-10 years of AI and algorithms from dating sites.

It will literally have the most optimal way for humans to meet and mate.

I imagine AI is how they intend to monetize the app in the future. The promise of finding the perfect match.

I don't think Tinder takes enough information for that to really work though. Would be cool if they'd do it without ever adding a race filter.

What about really good looking guys who get flooded with messages from girls? Why not give everyone the option? #menmattertoo

Pretty much what bumble does. All these apps pretty much just take from eachother.

How does that work if both people have that option on? Neither would be able to send the first message?

Given the 80-20 percentile interaction breakdown for women vs men (respectively), this would have to be a very small number... maybe less than a percent of that top 20th percentile. In other words, mostly useless.

big edit: I tried to find the OKTrends bit that established the "80-20" concept. Basically, they took a bunch of data points on interaction to determine likability/attractiveness across the app (how many people message back, starting to date someone, etc.). What the analysis found was that the top 80% of women interact with the top 20% of men.
OKCupid has published data as well showing that OKC is not special - their trends are the same trends on other platforms, including ones like Tinder. Since reading that bit, they've taken it down. Perhaps it had flawed methodology, or the way people reacted made the service less attractive. I'm not sure. But the 80-20 concept is present in what I would call the "loser" online communities (MGTOW, Red Pill, etc.). I don't mean to imply it's a solid rule or anything, but I definitely think it's real and captures a real trend (although I'm sure there's variance in the percentages).

How would this be useful on a site where members must already consent to be messaged by swiping right? The sorts of men who would send scumbag first messages to their matches are just going send scumbag second messages now instead.

The only people who might want this are those who never intend to message anyone to begin with, and only use the app as a confidence booster, which isn't good for Tinder anyway.

Whitney Wolfe Herd (Bumble's CEO) is gonna be SOOOOO quick to file a lawsuit. Her and Tinder's founders already beefing, so this is just icing on the cake.

Bumble got the dating apps shook.

I think women having the first say in these things is the best option.

Didn't they sue Bumble for copying them?

Now put in profile verification to get rid of the bots you cowards.

I always thought this was a good idea. Until all your matches on Bumble never send you a message, and I think it's because they don't know men can't message first.

Tinder honestly made a lot of smart decisions early on. No race filter and not allowing nudes to be sent were inspired choices.

I hope it hides them from you until they send a message. No need to have a bunch of matches clogging up your inbox who you can't message.

Or the kind of women who want to frame the conversation on their terms and are tired of cold openers like "Nice tits".

It also empowers women to attack the pile of matches at their leisure, sorting through the "best" ones first instead of being bombarded by hundreds of messages a day (which is the reality for women in online dating). From my experience you get more genuine attention on Bumble rather than Tinder.

That could be part of the problem, but as another poster mentioned, a lot of people use these apps with zero intention on meeting people or even messaging them. They just browse and like based off photos, and then feel good about themselves by seeing which/how many like them back.

Tinder can make it a loud and proud feature with a little how-to guide that plays when they open the app for the first time after the update to make sure women are aware of the feature, but it's odd that bumble, who based the entire app around the concept of women messaging men first, has issues with women not knowing the feature exists.

Won't do much for people in this game unless that first message also has to be more substantial than "hi"/"hey"/"sup".

Also wannabe instagram models collect local followers this way.

Definitely can't sue over this.

Tinder sued over the swiping interface.

Tinder sucks. Deleted my account and when I tried to create a new one it said my facebook and phone were banned from violating the rules and I emailed them and they said they wouldn't appeal it bc they take their community guidelines very seriously.

I deleted my own account lul

Again though, I don't think that the sort of guy who would send that message is going to suddenly change gears just because he was sent a tactful opener.

To the second point, isn't that what Tinder's matching feature is designed to counter in the first place? If anyone, male or female, has so many matches that they're overwhelmed by messages, perhaps it's time to start swiping left more often.

It just seems redundant, and seems like it would only serve to limit interaction on an app that revolves around matches interacting.

I'm not sure why you'd even match when you don't intend to talk to them?

Tinder is good for like 20% of people....The other 80% need actual human interaction to get someone interested.

Does Bumble have a patent on women messaging first. Also, aren't Bumble and Tinder owned by the same company?

I see it as totally redundant as well. Internally, it's probably viewed of as more of a marketing point.

People who say "Nice tits" as an opener will also say "Nice tits" after being engaged in conversation. Hence, the only difference is that you won't get rude messages from people you never intented to talk with in the first place. Which is not that useful.

I do not actually see a situation where this has an actual, meaningful impact. In fact, it may only promote men using Tinder even more of a numbers game than before, as they no longer have the chance to open a conversation, which will lead to a worse environment for everyone.

Anyways, I'm so glad I'm out of the dating game. All these apps are growing increasingly worse to try paliate their lack of moderation and overabundance of assholes. Now OkCupid doesn't let you message people outright anymore, which means that either they see you, or you are out.

Ultimately, it must be kept in mind that these companies proft mostly from desperate men and use women as an attraction to the former, like the sexist "women enter free" crap that some bars do. They do not seek a good environment, they seek ways for people to spend money.
