I really don't see how you can make the argument that MS just putting a limited selection of their titles on the PC under very specific conditions is 'good enough' then turn around and say that Sony putting all of their titles on PC doesn't count because reasons.
If your stance is that just making big name exclusives available to Pc owners is good enough, Sony are doing a significantly better job at that than MS are. Which is ridiculous any way you cut it, because MS literally own the Windows platform.
If your stance is that things PC gamers expect certain things in ports, MS are still doing a poor job on that front thanks to their adherence to using an appstore as their digital distribution platform.
Like... I don't see how you can reconcile these two facts.
Why not? If Microsoft is moving towards a more closed-platform, then it endangers what is arguably the most important characteristic of PC gaming. Ultimately everyone will make their own choice, whether they're told something or not.
PlayStation Now is irrelevant. Sony is in no position to make platform-altering changes to Windows or PC gaming at large. The Windows Store on the other hand is more than just a bad store.
Ultimately the solution is to make Linux the home of PC gaming, something that Valve has done a remarkable job in moving it forward.
That's your version of the discussion, I've never said that. I see no reason to boycott MS' console because they screw up with their PC efforts. It would be rather silly to hate the entire company for this.
So let's tldr one last time: I do refuse to support the Windows Store because MS is using it to turn PC gaming into console gaming. But I have no problems buying an Xbox, once it has a decent amount of exclusives that interest me.
Spencer already did a great job turning the Xbox One in the most advanced and most pro-consumer console. If his new studios deliver some fresh and creative 1st party games, I'll probably end up buying one (or it's successor) instead of borrowing my friends Xbox to play Forza Horizon.
If Spencer somehow succeeds in fixing the issues I'm having with MS' current PC efforts, I'll just buy their games on PC of course.
As I just said above, this doesn't apply for me. I will use the Microsoft Store as soon as MS stops selling games in encrypted containers, fixes the most common technical issues and adjusts the prices to the level of every other games store on PC. I've survived uPlay in it's early years, so I can live with the sub-par interface and clunky Xbox app. :)
Oh, so now it's about quantity? The argument presented was they were doing a better job and my answer was are they?
Those games are in fact even more limited as Microsoft has been open to mod support more so, example being Fallout.
The other drawback is mod support, what mod support is allowed in Destiny 2 or FIFA?
The "vision" presented is Play Anywhere.
I didn't name that initiative that.
But its not "play anywhere" is it?
What selected titles MS release don't play nicely with the tools PC gamers are already using for things like friends lists, voice chat, screenshots, video captures, etc. They only play nicely with the tools MS wants people to use.
They don't work - at all - on any version of Windows that is not 10, and any version of Windows 10 that is not patched to the latest version are problematic to say the least.
They will happily sell Gamepass to Windows 10 users, but it is an empty shell that is not worth what is being asked for it.
And happy Xbox owners will chime in and say "but its not for PC owners, they're not meant to buy it" here.
But what is a PC gamer expected to conclude from that, if not that MS don't really give much of a fuck about PC gamers when compared to Xbox gamers?
And they can tease "console quality streaming to any device!" as some upcoming feature they're hard at work at, so that maybe sometime down the line Pc gamers can get some Xbox scraps.
Meanwhile Sony are offering all that shit to PC gamers right now. PC gamers on a Microsoft platform called Windows.
So yes. Sonys Playstation brand is offering more to a gamer on a MS platform than MS themselves are. Right now. Not in some hypothetical future.
I really do not give a shit how 'open' MS are to 'modding' on an Xbox.
I don't own an Xbox. I have no desire to own an Xbox.
My PC is not only better than any Xbox currently is, its better than any Xbox ever will be.
There is zero reason to ever be talking about "xbox" in any topic about PC gaming.
Nobody questions the Xbox divisions commitment to Xbox.
You don't need officially sanctioned developer support to mod Pc games.
Like... that's the point.
That's how PC gamers can get quickfixes to problems without waiting for an official patch.
Or re-enable titles that have been broken and get them running again without waiting for a 'remaster'.
Or make aesthetic tweaks like removing piss filters, or chromatic abberation, or injecting new methods of Anti-aliasing.
Or use an engine and assets to create an entirely new game out of what already exists.
Destiny 2 is an MMO and deliberately tries to prevent mods, because the mods people would be most interested in are those that affect other people, it being an MMO. If it had a single player campaign, people would be running wild with it.
There are a ton of mods for FIFA. Just google FIFA mods.
All Sony is offering is a streaming service with subpar quality. I tried it and the input lag was noticeable and so was the compression, yet you are trying to convince PC gamers this is good? This is somehow preferred to playing Forza Horizon 4 on the PC? Are you serious? You can only now, after many years, download the games on your PS4, not the PC. So you essentially have a inferior backwards comparability band-aide to offer PC gamers.
Your PC must be better than your PS4 or Switch as well, right?
So all your reasons like mod support don't seem to matter now do they if you buy games for your PS4 or Switch? Why are you able to give up those features now and support the PS4 or Switch?
I'm not trying to 'convince' anyone.
I'm saying it is ludicrous that Playstation are offering more to PC gamers on a microsoft platform than MS themselves are.
Why are you even talking about consoles in a topic about the problems with the W10 appstore in the first place?
Seriously though, I have no idea. You think it would be a much more attractive proposition to the customer if it actually, ya know, worked well? I dont know how this logic escapes microsoft.
Playstation Now offers more? Awesome, a streaming service with no mod support, no options, noticeable input lag, and compressed visuals. Great response.
Yes. For all those flaws its still better value for money than GamePass is for Pc owners.
You asked why people have problems with the W10 appstore, but you don;t actually want to read the reasons why. You'd rather just whatabout other consoles.
Continue to remain mystified why people who don;t want an Xbox continue to not want Xbox-lite, I guess.
You already explained, lack of mod support and you don't like Windows 10. Have fun with Playstation Now instead I guess.
I mean, if you want to willfully ignore what I'm saying, sure. You got it all figured out.
Its literally that attitude which is the reason why it continues to be a storefront nobody particularly wants to use, and fewer still want to be successful.
Theres a long list of 'easy wins' MS could to to reduce pain points in PC gaming.
They just don;t give a shit, because Xbox owners don't give a shit about fellow gamers who are also gaming on an MS platform.
Would you agree that things like not knowing the progress of a download is not fine?
I don't have a huge issue with not allowing mod support etc. I'll gladly use the store if it's the only way to play Xbox games without an Xbox. But, there are a staggering number of reports of weird download or installation errors. Hell, I had to download Forza Horizon 3 twice to make it work.
It just doesn't seem like the store is well set up for managing games, and they've had plenty of time to fix it.
Do you agree with that general appraisal?
you may not speak for others on that front noGuys, I don't think anyone would oppose the fact that the Microsoft Store is quite shit. :P
The discussion around it is more in the business ethics and Microsoft's overall pc gaming strategy. But these discussions tend to overlap quite a lot.
If I may speak for others;
Many Xbox fans/MS fans: Microsoft Store is shit, but we'll use it anyway cuz we like the content.
Many PC Gamers: Microsoft Store is shit, but even if it wasn't we wouldn't use it.
So discussing in a thread about the quality of the store doesn't really make sense to me. :P
I can only speak for myself. When State of Decay 2 came out I downloaded it through Game Pass. It was taking awhile so I decided to turn the PC off and try again later. I couldn't resume my download, had to do it all over again. Pretty stupid. Game Pass would not indicate Gears of War 4 was available, could only buy it. Tried a few times, same thing. Hours later decided to try again and now the option to download was there through my Game Pass subscription. Clunky.
Yes, growing pains. Yes it could be better. Yes I hope they get their act together. Yes I worry about the next Age of Empires. Is this all so terrible to ignore games like Forza Horizon 4? No. Would I pay full price of Game Pass? No, I don't have an Xbox One. If I did sure, great bargain. I got 6 months for $30 so to me the value was worth it on the PC now.
Please enlighten me how pressing the install button and then the install automatically starts and fucks up is user error. Fucking nonsense.Or you just need to understand how computers work. What does having an X1 have to do with anything? I have a PS4 as well , how does that affect the windows store?
MS is most likely not counting on PC revenue from non Xbox users; it's a bonus for them which is why the whole program has been designed as a extension for Xbox users. Over time they will see there is interest from PC only owners and will need to update their strategy and execute from the POV of that user. I hope that happens soon.
See, that's the dilemma YOU put yourself in. You won't buy an Xbox One because it doesn't have enough games and you won't support Xbox games on Windows because of the nature of how they are encrypted and other excuses.
So as I was saying, your principles are only as good as the napkin they were written on because YOU DO support encrypted games already with NO MOD SUPPORT and are only using the excuse that Sony and Nintendo don't put their games on the PC. See, now it's about the games so obviously mod support and limited functions/features/settings are really not that important to you after all . You are essentially punishing the developers just because they work for Microsoft. Good job. The PC version of games like Forza Horizon 4 can actually run better than the console version, so tell me again what the real problem is because I cannot play Driveclub over 30fps or mod it, which is something you would support. Makes no sense to me so maybe you can explain it to me one more time?
Mod support and limited functions/features/settings are important to me: that's why I buy almost every multiplatform game on PC instead of console. It sucks when a game isn't available on PC, I'd love to play Driveclub in 1440p@144fps for example. But buying a game on console is a lot less likely to have a major impact on the nature and future of PC gaming than supporting the Windows Store in it's current state. Microsoft isn't pushing their Store and UWP for 1st party games only; they want 3rd party devs and publishers in there as well and they are happy to use exclusivity and marketing deals to achieve that goal. The main reason why this isn't working out for them is because the majority of PC gamers refuses to use the Windows Store.
Yes, it really is dumb. And for people telling us to get over it? Would you accept these kinds of errors on the ps store or Xbox store or would you want them fixed? That's your answer to this. So don't try to defend it. They've had six years to iron out these annoyances but they're still here. Six years.Oh my god, I thought it was just me. YES, I had this issue last night and it drove me absolutely fucking nuts. Was trying to redownload the Forza Horizon 4 demo and the file size just wouldn't stop inflating... It'd reach the max size and just keep going, by the time I finally downloaded it the size had reached 90GB. In the end it turns out that the Microsoft Store is just completely broken, and it's not actually downloading the size it says it is... You just have to let it complete and ignore the progress bar, which is totally unhelpful and shit but it's the only way.
How did the deal between Sony and Bungie/Activision help you for Destiny on the PC? How does Nintendo help the PC? How does supporting Red Dead Redemption 2 and multiple other console exclusives help the PC platform?
You would have integrity if you just stuck with PC gaming. You don't. It's as simple as that. Nobody is stopping you on your crusade to bring awareness on Windows Store. The more awareness the more likely they will fix the problems but your issues go beyond technical ones and that is where you lose support from people like me. Especially when you don't practice what you preach.
Console exclusives don't help the PC platform, but barely damage it neither. Not being able to play a certain game on PC is peanuts compared to the impact of Microsofts plans to turn PC gaming into console gaming.
You're free to think that way and I respect your opinion. But I don't agree with it. I don't see how buying console games can have a major impact on the open nature of PC gaming. Despite the huge success of consoles, PC gaming is healthier and better than ever.
But I am convinced that supporting an ecosystem that tries to lock down PC gaming WILL damage PC gaming, especially when it's done by the owner of the OS that's required for most PC games. So I won't stop my "crusade" to make people aware of this. What they do with this information is up to them of course.
This. MS are capable of greatness. Visual Studio and the .Net platform are industry leading tools I love using as part of my job. Using XP and Windows 7 was an absolute treat, because it treated me like a competent, valued owner of their software. Xbox Live made console online good, and set the standard for the industry. BC on the Xbone is an act of sheer engineering excellence. You would think for a company with major app store envy they would try a little harder to get the "app store" part right. Yet the focus always seems to be bending customers to their business model (privacy defaults of Win10, Firefox/Chrome installer interception, WIn10S, etc). How about creating a service so good people actually want to use it?
There's nothing more to be said here.
Which is why it's nonsensical to bring other console manufacturers who don't mess with PC gaming into this discussion regarding the windows store not being fit for purpose (and the possible reasons why that's still the case after all this time). "At least they sell their games on PC" is not a good argument. If they are going to do that then they should do it properly.

looks at tagI wish you all would tweet Phil about the Xbox console UI , as someone who worked on the Xbox 360 dashboard , I just cannot get over the UI on Xbox one which I think is a bigger issue than the Windows store lol.
Wait, are we talking about having mod support on Windows Store with UWP and DRM nightmare there??? Ahahahaha....You already explained, lack of mod support and you don't like Windows 10. Have fun with Playstation Now instead I guess.
