I don't know the details but "found it in an airport" definitely sounds like a cover story for something more nefarious. I'm gonna have to look more into this.

Edit: Just looked it over more. Either this airport story is true, or a reviewer somehow dropped their copy. Still leaning towards sketchy, though, based on how I'm pretty sure Nintendo usually uses digital review code.

I mean, I could see a bid like that if the game in question was like Cyberpunk 2077 or Death Stranding but fucking Mario Party?

That is insane.

Also switch cartridges have unique identifiers so it would be the cherry on top if Nintendo managed to find out which one this is and ban it before launch.

"How much would you pay to play a game a week early?"

Apparently for someone the answer is 7 large.

just because you win an auction doesn't mean you have to pay. definitely didn't sell for that much

Little off topic, but this reminds me when infamous Second Son was being sold by some shady seller on ebay like 3 weeks early (normal $60 price + shipping thank god). A bunch of us at GAF pulled the trigger after someone confirmed that they were legit. In hindsight, they might have been stolen.

$7k might be a bit too much for a week in advance copy. Maybe the buyer wants for a party XD

I have to hide myself from any online presence when I review games a week or two early. It's insane the stuff people will offer to play something early.

One day these publishers are going to realize they can make a ton more money than they ask for now just to give it to people earlier and earlier.

Like Ubisoft does for the 3day early access for the most expensive AC:Ody editions? Or Microsoft with Forza Horizon 4?

I'd like to think a reviewer left it at the airport and paid $7000 to get it back so he wouldn't lose his job. That's some funny hijinx there.

it's would be pretty hilarious if the shipping time ends up being so long that the buyer doesn't actually get the game till the games already out

Yup all across consumer services business development knows people will pay crazy amounts for early access. Shoe retailers do this too by releasing a subset early and people pay crazy markup just to get shoes a week before normal release from resellers.

That's nothing. What I'm saying is they can be making WAY more than that if they really wanted.

For example I was playing Titanfall 2 for review a while back, it was literally the morning before it's release date.

Somebody messaged me on Xbox and offered me 350 bucks to gameshare with him.

That was crazy because the game was going to be out.... for 60 bucks in just a few hours at midnight anyways.

NBA 2K19 4 days early or AC: Odyssey 2 days early for $100? Not worth it. Damaged Super Mario Party MAYBE a week early depending on shipping? Over $7000, easy.

Let's face it - the rich are getting richer. What regular people think is a crazy amount of money is nothing to well off people. US$7100 - people pay that for a first class flight for 6 hours.

I predict earlier access is going to be even worse on the next generation of consoles.

They'll have 4 or 5 tiers with the first and second tiers almost a month early (effectively when the game is gold anyway). Streamers love this and will pay it.

Heck people who don't want to pay $60 wait half a year or more for discounts.
