It's a battle of the indie Knights and their respective games. If you had to pick which game do you prefer? Hollow Knight or Shovel Knight?

Hollow Knight is a much better game that I wouldn't even put them into the same conversation.

Hollow knight is so much better. That might just be because I don't like heavy platforming games.

Both games are great. People in this thread will suggest otherwise. These people are wrong.

Aesthetically, Hollow Knight is cooler, in my opinion.

I like playing Hollow Knight more than playing Shovel knight, it's weird.

...plus I like Hollow Knight's artwork more

Hollow Knight, but it's almost like asking me which of my children I prefer since Shovel Knight is also so good.

Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight, Isaac Rebirth, Spelunky, and Zachtronics's oeuvre all take turns as my favorite indie game depending on the day.

I liked Shovel Knight more. I dropped Hollow Knight afte 15 hours or so. I just don't seem to enjoy Metroidvanias anymore as the wandering around and figuring out where to go next drove me nuts. Made worse by having to find the guy and buy a map in each new area rather than it just auto filling as you explore. That, and stuff like losing your money when you die twice etc. just rubbed me the wrong way. I'm not a fan of the Souls games for similar reasons. Hard and obtuse just for the sake of being hard. That said, it's a very well made game so I get the appeal and accolades. Just not my cup of tea.

Shovel Knight was more up my alley being more linear and straightforward with still a nice challenge.

This comparison makes no sense. They are both excellent in what they do but what they are doing is so different.

So what do you like better? FIFA 18 or Smash Bros?

Hey guys which game do you prefer Shadow of Destiny or Shadow the Hedgehog.
Shadow of Destiny is the better game, but Shadow the Hedgehog memes have given me more enjoyment in aggregate over time, so I'm gonna have to go with the latter unfortunately.

This comparison makes no sense. They are both excellent in what they do but what they are doing is so different.

Smash Bros easily.

Just because two games are different doesn't mean you can't prefer one to the other. Do you guys get mad when people say Dark Souls is their favorite game because how could they possibly be comparing that 428 Shibuya Scramble or Dance Dance Revolution?

Hollow Knight is more aesthetically pleasing, but in my heart of hearts, I love me a good retro-style game.

Shovel Knight for life, baby

They're pretty different games so the comparison is a little weird. That being said while both are great I prefer Hollow Knight.

Huh? I'm not mad in the slightest. I just think it is better to compare similar games.

But fuck it, you convinced me so I'll say this: Hollow Knight isn't fit to even lick Shovel Knight's boots.

It's okay to compare games, even if they are a different genre. At this time, 50 users so far have compared the games and the sun will still rise tomorrow. What's the matter? You can't compare different fruit against each other?

both are great, but Hollow Knight is a top 5 game of all time for me so that one.

This is like choosing between mom and dad (or, in my case, far worse). Both are pretty much perfect games, quite possibly the literal pinnacles of their respective genres.

Hollow Knight is a really good game but Shovel Knight is honestly the only 2D side-scrolling I can think of that I considered my GotY and is my favorite 2D platformer to date. I personally enjoy tightly designed focused levels and areas over games focused on exploration and navigation. Not that Hollow Knight isn't well designed but a 2D platformer is naturally gonna have more tightly designed levels or areas

To be clear, my problem deciding on one over the other is not that they're in different genres, it's that they're the best of each genre. They're both 10/10 for me, how do I compare two 10s?

I enjoy Hollow Knight but I feel like I have to be in a certain mood to play it due to its dark atmosphere, whereas I can play Shovel Knight no matter what mood I'm in since it's a much lighter tone. Hollow Knight has some quippy dialogue here and there but the overall mood feels like it should be played at night.

I liked Shovel Knight better with all the additional content they've added over the years. Spectre Knight was better than Plague Knight and I hope that King Knight next year will continue the trend. They're both very good though. If it was limited to their vanilla content, then yeah Hollow Knight would win easily, but Shovel Knight's added content has been unbelievable and completely overshadows HK's, admittedly excellent, additions

Shovel Knight is way too short of a game, so Hollow Knight.
Did you only play the vanilla game?

I actually thought Shovel was pretty underwhelming when it came out. I dunno, didn't really click with me, but I only played a few hours.

Hollow Knight is a straight up masterpiece in my mind.

...I don't understand what you want to get out of this. They're two very different games. It would be more comparable to have Shovel Knight vs Celeste, even though they're still two different subgenres of platforming, they're both straight platformers, not metroidvanias. Hollow Knight's only platforming challenge is the Path of Pain (White Palace is hardly a challenge).

Hollow Knight has somewhat more content but with the Treasure Trove the difference isn't meaningful, it has some instances of poorer pacing but mostly felt fine... I don't think there's enough difference in the objective quality of the two games.

These are only being compared because they have Knight in the title, I guess? They're very different. Shovel Knight accomplishes what it tries to do and is very good, but Hollow Knight is a much more ambitious game and much better for it imo

I love both.

I guess I prefer playing HK more than SK because it's longer, meatier, and there is more stuff to see and do. The fluidity of HK is also super fun.

I would rate SK higher than HK though. Both games execute the formulas of their respective genres very well, but SK does so perfectly while adding to the genre with the checkpoint system. On the other hand, I think HK's execution is less than perfect (but still excellent) as some of the areas are too samey and navigating around the world isn't always as good as it should be. I don't think anything HK does is particularly new or innovative, it's just all in a beautiful package that's great to control.

To me, these two games are so excellent that they both deserve the same space. It doesn't really matter which one is better. We can have this discussion (and, frankly, I enjoy such pedantic endeavors), but it doesn't really matter in the end.

Very different games, but gun to my head Hollow. Shovel Knight is awesome, though.

I'd go Shovel to be honest. Hollow Knight is a great game, but the DLC's direction moving towards boss rush type content was not something I was a fan of. Shovel Knight kept adding more stories and content.

I like the humorous, wistful, yet bittersweet tone of Shovel Knight way more than Hollow Knight's fatalistic ambiguity.
