I loved the movie except the Kessel set which looked way to fake with its high walls same for the set in the first third when they were camping at night in the snow

I liked the snarky droid, but otherwise I thought it was completely average.

I just don't buy Alden as Han Solo.

That was really good? Like I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it? Do we know how much was Ron Howard and how much was Lord & Miller?

Fuck, I want a solo 2!

Anyways what did you guys think?

As someone who hates Episode 7, thinks Rogue One is ok and hates Episode 8, I thought it was amazing. I really really loved it.

From start to finish it felt like a true Star Wars movie. But the best part is, it was just a well shot, well paced, well cast, suspensful movie. The characters were awesome, all the actors spot on. Both as a Star Wars movie, as regular movie and as a Han Solo origin story it was brilliant!

It's a really good question to ask how much Ron Howard contributed to all of this. I mean, he was is the director after all.

To me it felt it was mostly him. He did a great job.

Anyway, I recommend anybody to not listen to the nay-sayers. Solo was a reall good movie - whether you are a fan of Star Wars or not -, plain and simple.

It's such a small moment, but I love this part of the film especially with the music:

Just watched it last night for the first time. I went in with low expectations and really enjoyed it.

I didn't really think about the comparison to Ford's Solo much, which is definitely the best approach.

I actually appreciate the depth extra story we now have of the Han Solo character. I was one of the people who said from the beginning we didn't need this movie, but I appreciate it now that I've seen it.

It kind of worked out in a way. Michael K WIlliams was doing mo-cap, his Vos was a CGI character. Which sounds kind of eeeehhh.

This is what MKW's Vos was to look like based off the concept art:

I really enjoyed Solo though it could've been improved in a couple ways I thought it was great and had heart to it.

I feel like no one else feels the same as me in this. But I really enjoyed Alden's young Han Solo, I don't care that it's not Harrison Ford. I thought he did really good at being Solo. Much better than I felt Donald Glover was at being Lando, and I went in expecting to love his Lando but I really really didn't.

Movie still suffered because a prequel of Han Solo isn't at the top of many people's star wars wish lists plus it seemed to be rushed out. If it cam out around now it would probably do a lot better since it would be more time separated from TLJ

i agree with redlettermedia that it is an ugly film. it's so dark for how lighthearted it is. i don't understand.

also it was sort of how i thought rogue one could have gone? like, i was expecting that film to be the heist movie. this has more fun with that idea.

i thought alden did fine but i did not think of him as ford's solo. i enjoyed the humor though. my favorite line was the smug 'i just did the kessel run in 12 parsecs' to an unimpressed worker.

Dun dun dunnnnnn. Meh .... scene was played as like this big reveal but first time I saw it I was just like i don't even know what that is. Was I supposed to be straight shook by what Crimson Dawn did there? heh
lol yeah. That reveal and the whole thing with Ky'ra was such a lame sequel and comic tie-in bait.

How is your opinion any less or more valid than mine or SolicitorPirate? I always thought that "resetera.gif" thing was dumb, as if this is the only place with differentiating opinions.

I didn't say my opinion was more valid.

I just found it mildly fun that the same phrase and comparison was used to describe the same film in completely the opposite manner one post immediately after the other. I mean, what are the odds? The whiplash was amusing.

That's it...

So I just watched it.

Great world building, Lando and Han were both solid and I could watch them play Sabacc all day. Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson were fine. I don't really have any major problems with the film tbh. It's not what I'd consider great overall but it's fine. Would I watch again? No, it's still somewhat forgettable at the end of the day.

Maul being alive in canon makes no sense though. Yes I've watched TCW. It makes no sense. :P His 30 seconds was rather pointless in the grand scheme of things since we're not likely to see a sequel with him in it. Even then, it makes no sense. :x

i didnt hate this at all, but honestly it just makes me want non-SW soft sci-fi space opera media. i think this wouldve been a fun, exciting romp and a good foundation to build on if it werent attached to the SW universe/canon.

also, after i watched it i just watched a supercut of the best clips on Youtube and had a better time, so.

We already get the conclusion to Mauls story via Rebels so it's no biggie there.

I enjoyed this, despite it's fundamental problem that it is a prequel with no reason to exist on this earth.

I tried to watch this tonight. Gave up pretty quickly on it.

I don't need this movie. Within 40 mins we get answers to all of this.

-where did he get his last name?
-where did he learn to fly
-where did he meet chewie
-where did he get his blaster

Lol I don't NEED know this and I felt like the movie was playing to nostalgia crowd.

I can't believe anyone would choose this over TLJ.

To each their own though

Yeah, that was weird. "Surprise! The Crimson Dawn is evil!" Yeah, duh...

Also, one hell of a coincidence that the only known independent refinery in the nearby Galaxy is run by people who had lost everything to Crimson Dawn.

Tell you the truth: Besides the name part which was silly and unnecessary the other answers really didn't bother me. They were just kind of there and didn't cause me to think about Harrison Ford's character or any need from the writers to reference the older movies, even if I now realize that was precisely their intention.

If you found yourself distracted by these nods I can absolutely see how you wouldn't like this movie.

I quite enjoyed it. Might be my favorite Disney Star Wars movie. Could have looked better and not a fan of Clarke. 3/5 stars.

I gotta say, Maul, even when he's just sitting, is a total badass. He needed more screen time in the prequels. :(

If you stayed more, you would have learned why Han speaks of Parsecs about the Kessel run, have the explanation of what is that Kessel run, and have the movie nearly end with the famous
"Fair and Square"

The casting was pretty bad for Han and Lando, but overall it was better than my (low) expectations.

Liked Rogue One more. Better than TFA an TLJ, both of which are straight garbage/somehow worse than the prequels.

Going into the movie I was told Donald Glover was the best part while the guy playing Han was the weak point. I actually found it to be the opposite, the accent Glover was doing seemed forced and inconsistent. The guy playing Han was okay. The robot was awful. The movie overall was fun, think I liked it more than Rogue One.

Never seen a worse paced movie. Honestly had no idea if it was over or if there was a whole other act until the credits hit.

Edit: hm, I've seen Suicide Squad too...

I had zero expectations for this but actually enjoyed it. It's quite funny too and it was great to see Maul in a film again. Absolute badass. Shame we're unlikely to see him again.

I watched the 4k bluray yesterday evening, the picture was so god damn dark, it could have been 720p I wouldn't have seen the difference.

Only noticed the HDR during fights when expositions were too bright and hurt my eyes because of the overall darkness of the movie.

Just watched it last night. My thoughts:

  • Wholly unnecessary, but thoroughly entertaining.
  • I still don't think a Solo origin story was necessary or something I needed to see, but I think overall they did a great job with a smaller, less consequential story.
  • The visuals, set design, character design, costumes, & cinematography were superb, and really really harkened back to that 70's era Star Wars style which I loved. A darker aesthetic than I would've preferred, but beautiful nonetheless.
  • Alden Ehrenreich really never felt like Harrison Ford's Solo character to me, but if you remove that part of the equation, he was a magnetic and charismatic centerpiece to the film. I had no problems with his performance & I think he would've been a great leading man in any other film, but he didn't feel like the old Han Solo to me.
  • Donald Glover stole the show, and Woody Harrelson and Paul Bettany were great in their roles as well. I was actually really taken off guard but how much I enjoyed Emilia Clarke's performance. I've always thought she was kind of a generic, monotone actress, but she was animated & full of emotion in this.
  • Some subplots missed the mark, like the L3-37 droid didn't do it for me for example, and the Thandie Newton stuff was rushed, but overall I really enjoyed it.
  • Fantastic ending. I loved
Han shooting Beckett first, setting up the entire persona of the character in the original films
  • I also loved
the ending scene with Han winning the Falcon from Lando. Just a fun, classic Star Wars feeling scene.
  • I think my very low expectations helped with this one. It's the worst of the new films, but I don't mean that as an insult. All of the new films are great. 7/10
1. Empire Strikes Back
2. The Last Jedi
3. The Force Awakens
4. A New Hope
5. Rogue One
6. Return of the Jedi
7. Solo
8. Revenge of the Sith
9. The Phantom Menace
10. Attack of the Clones

I finally watched it and had a really good time with it. I'm past trying to gauge the new SW movies against the original trilogy. I'm old enough that those three films are almost religiously nostalgic to me, and with that baggage none of the newer movies stand a chance.

Solo and the Last Jedi are easily the ones I've liked the most of the newer offerings. Neither of these movies are perfect, and Solo sometimes flirt a bit too much with nostalgic references, but they are both great fun space adventures. TFA is too much a retelling of ANH, and Rogue one is a cool spectacle that just feels a little soulless.
