Started putting major time into Pinbal FX3 since the recent announcements of their Williams deal and it's been cool playing it in vertical mode. Anyone got any recommendations for more games best played in Vertical/Portrait?
Cave's ports like Mushihimesama and DoDonPachi Resurrection are good for that. Downwell is another one.

I never understood the anti-static brace.
I just touch something metallic before working in there; usually the screw on my light switch panel.

Like, what do people do to generate that much static?
At worst if you're worried, just work naked since clothes are about the only thing that could generate more static.
I may or may not have done that for my first build back then...

From that Verge article:
That was March 2018.

Dang.
And show us they did.

Mt. Whatever
Seeing the repeated mentions of the possiblity of Elder Scrolls VI in the upcoming technically impressive games thread, reminded me that we likely won't see it launch on Steam if Bethesda doesn't walk back this bullpoo with Fallout76.

I'm kinda torn. I put a lot of time (600+ hours) and mods into Elder scrolls IV and V.... Don't really want to support another separate platform though. I wouldn't mind if they went the Ubi route and just made me install the Bethesda version of uplay lite, but Fallout76 isn't even doing that huh?

Wow, so apparently Telltale's fall can pretty much be attributed to one guy, Kevin Bruner. He was so jealous of the other developers getting famous that he caused them to leave, going on to form Campo Santo for Firewatch and Night School Studios for Oxenfree. And apparently a running joke at the company compared Bruner's attention to the Eye of Sauron. And then there's this:

edit:

Brainfart, edited. Thank you lol.
Wasn't Bruner also the reason they couldn't change their shitty engine for the longest time, because he coded it originally or something?

edit: Yes, he "initially served as Telltale's CTO creating and implementing much of the core technology that drives Telltale's unique and high paced production process."

Well, I caved to peer pressure.

Time to see if Nier: Automata is worth the hype.

10hours later:

Fuck that game. I finished it once and have to play through the game again?! wtf?"

One thing: Please dont think of the routes as actual routes, but chapters. After "route A", "Route B" is the continuation of the story after a while and Route C/D too.

That's Shadow of the Tomb Raider finished. I'm sitting at 92.05% completion after 26 hours of gameplay, and I'm not sure if I'll get the 100% as it feels a bit like busy work, especially after finishing all the tombs. Maybe the DLC tombs will draw me back for a little while, can't say.

Not entirely sure what I expected either, but the devs somehow managed to reduce the amount of combat, the most complained about part of previous games, and turn out a worse game than Rise of the Tomb Raider. I'm actually impressed by how painfully mediocre the whole experience was. At least Rise avoided some rather awkward colonial/white saviour tropes, so that's something.

At least photomode was nice. If they improve that I'll be in for some more snaps for sure.

Just to settle this argument: Nier Automata is great.

Edit: it bears repeating, though this particular repetition was due to a 505 error.

26 hours? Are you kidding me? I'm at 3% completion after 6 hours, you guys are too damn fast

I am playing for ~18h i think and i am at 30% completion. It looks like many are rushing through the game because there is no way i would be able to finish this in 25h.

So far i am loving the game. I am so happy about lack of combat and more exploration/platforming. Also playing on Hard, makes such a big difference. This finally feels like a modern TR game.
So far i can say that it's better than both reboot and Rise. Tombs are breathtaking.

always confusing why people use "overhyped" as a negative quality of the game... why does it matter to you?? i don't get why people need to frame their disliking of a game around how much other people like it...

anyways, nier tomato is not perfect but it's pretty good. it's the most approachable yoko taro game i've played, and comes with all his staples: great music, cool character designs, yoko taro's trademark unique-for-games atmosphere of sadness, dread and nostalgia, wacky ultra anime absurd existentialism and uh, boring mashy gameplay

and surprises!

def worth playing

I liked Nier Automata a lot but at 50 hours I found it really overstayed it's welcome.
Plus the plot is much stronger at a thematic level than a strictly narrative one; the plot and events that unfold are just ok.

Going through some parts of my Steam library to give some games a further chance.

But man, the VO in Kingdom Come is really distractingly bad. Just 2h into to it, in Tamberg, but I would probably want the VO in some language I don't know, and just have sub titles.

Which ones don't you like? I think the dialogue and English voice actors are done very well. Got to dig deep to find games who do much better to be honest.

Henry is good, but others are so much worse. Like Sir Divish and Von aulitz, when they had their exchange at Tamberg, that was really really bad. It felt like watching a youtube video where some guys at home had tried to provide alternate VO.

Huh, apparently there was an alternate teaser ending for SOTR that got patched out. Link in the spoiler below.

Drag me!
But i just couldn't continue to torture myself. Didn't really have much fun with the game. It just felt empty and boring.
Route B isn't much better and basically the same as Route A from 9S' point of view. Apparently it gets good at route C but by that point I had already given up on the game due to not enjoying the combat, boring side quests, bugs and performance issues.

Thematically it feels like an interesting project but everything else really did not click with me. Besides the music which is really fantastic though.

Same here.
I really had this... bad feeling while playing the game almost all the time. Like not having fun at all and forcing myself to "finish" it. And not many games did this to me.

I had huge expectations and pre-ordered the game and it really disappointed me. I can still say that i liked it, but that's it. Maybe it's part my fault, because i was really hyped and excited about the game.

Why patch it out? Sounds like they are tying up the Re-Remake trilogy to be effectively a prologue to Tomb Raider 1. Works nicely, doesn't it?

for me it didn't get better until i played the whole 5 routes for a second time

yoko taro games ask a fair bit from you but i feel the games i've found most rewarding are usually like that

I will echo that Route B feels rather redundant, and yes most of the side quests are indeed crap.

Nevertheless, the experience as a whole over all 5 routes was pretty darn good; I'm fairly sure I pegged it in my top 5 for last year.

Beat my first game on my new laptop

*drum roll*

Ben 10!

Those that know me , realize this is a big deal as I rarely finish games. Took me about 3 weeks of playing an hour or so a week.

I played the first hour or so of Nier and really liked it but have had no real desire to go back and play, just have other games I'm interested in right now I guess.

Still going thru my steam library checking out games I couldn't run well before. Really looking forward to the winter holiday season where I should have more free time to tackle bigger games.

Strongly agree with the second point, well said. Worth sticking around for the music and some set pieces imo

NieR: Automata is fantastic. The minute after I finished it I bought the original NieR, and looked into Yoko Taro's career.

Nier Automata is a wild ride, none of the recent Japanese RPGs have topped it so far imo. Only thing that was better than it last year was Divinity to me.

To clarify, I actually don't think that Nier: Automata are a terrible game. I just extremely absolutely completely not agree with high praise it receives while having a shitload of flaws and deliberately bad design decisions. Maybe people just enjoy the story so much they ignored everything else, but it's so damn anime to the core, especially that annoying unlikeable prick 9S, even waifus can't save this shit.

Okay, made it through the opening of Nier: A.

What I expected: a capable but slightly weebish action RPG.

What I got: You like Gradius? Here, have some. Wait, time to platform a little. Comfortable? Now, it's an isometric hack and slash. Until it's not because it's reboot Ninja Gaiden time, motherfucker. Hope you remembered the evade button. Learn your timing fast because now you need to do all of it while the set pieces scale like mad and a few huge buzzsaws wreck your world and you'll be burning through your healing consumables like the worthless piece of shit you are.

Hopefully, the game keeps going with that because that was a fun start.

People keep saying this, yet i'm still waiting for suggestion on Animes that are like NieR
