Because I don't want to leave the house if I'm in comfy inside clothes and the extra cost is fortunately pretty minimal for me. I don't do it everyday though. Maybe once a week.

Depends on what you get though. $7 to get three piece meal delivered from popeyes, which includes three spicy thighs, fries, a biscuit, and a drink, (fucking delicious), is just so much more convenient to walking four or five blocks. Meanwhile something like $20 for getting a single shake shack double cheeseburger deliver isn't anywhere near the asking price even though those burgers are delicious.

Usually if I'm ordering delivery I get 2-3 meals to offset the delivery tip. We have a service that covers delivery fees for $10 a month, so it typically works itself out

But I'm also off a college campus and don't drive, so unless I eat at the same 2-3 places every week or spend 40ish minutes walking that could be spent studying, it just isn't worth it

I mean, I drive for Waitr/Doordash, and that money's how they pay us

They steal our tips, any tips you put in the app go to the company, not to us

So the only pay we get is that charge

I haven't used those service but f them if they're tricking customers into fake tipping.
Is there no way to reward the delivery guy through the app?

Nope. It's pretty garbage. I don't like working for them but I gotta make ends meet while I jobhunt, and this/Lyft is all I can really do atm until I get interviews

Only way to ensure driver gets the tip is with cash, or to tip so much that they get their cut and some is left

Basically, we get a 'guaranteed' amount, say $6, for your order, right? So $6 for let's say 30 min of work.

But only $2 of it comes from the actual order unless you tip more.

So it's like

If you pay $16 for an order, and tip $4 to make it an even 20

We only get $6 still, because they use the tip to offset our delivery cost

The only way we get the tip is if it goes above that guaranteed amount. So if you tip $5, we'll get $1 of it after they take their $4

It's complete shit

If you think you're getting ripped off think about the poor sons of bitches that have to deal with traffic, needing to constantly find parking, drought periods with no work, gas they have to pay themselves, to make 15 an hour if they're lucky

Capitalism can suck my fuckin dick and balls

You're paying for the 30-45 minutes the driver will need to deliver to you, the cost of building the app, the marketing team, the restaurants point of sale, customer support, management...

As others note, you're paying for convenience. We just use it when we're too busy and/or lazy to cook or go pick something up (or drinking and not able to drive) and don't mind paying extra for the convenience.

Hell, if anything it being pricey is to our benefit as we'd probably order even more and spend more overall and be having more unhealthy meals if it were closer to restaurants regular prices for carry out.

We don't order fast food or anything. Just pizza (outside the actual delivery area of any of them near us), Indian food, BBQ etc.

I work for Deliveroo and someone ordered a can of Pepsi and Pepsi Max (330ml each) from KFC. Under ÂŁ10 and that'd cost them a lot. The laziness of some people is off the charts. That is how those companies stay in business.

User warned: Insulting fellow users
Well yeah, you are getting ripped off. How did you not realise that instantly when you first ordered?

Is this meant to be a PSA for other morons?

Edit: Sorry for offending anyone who doesn't understand basic supply and demand, or mark ups on a service of convenience.

Uber Eats doesn't charge a fee on stores that are close to you. It's fucking amazing. I'm pretty sure they don't raise the prices on the food either. I've been using it a lot

I find it interesting how a lot of people in this thread are pointing out laziness as the primary factor yet Amazon is praised by many around here which often also comes down to the same criteria.

Ummm no. Amazon has products I can't find locally without driving for hours. In many cases the products aren't sold locally at all.

Let me think, I could spend 40 minutes driving out to pick up takeout for me and my friends, pausing whatever activity we're doing at the time... or I can spend $10 to make someone else deliver it for me.

Yeah, seems like a no-brainer.

And you know it would be different if I knew most of the money was at least going to the workers, but it isn't.
From the ones I worked with, apps take a percentage cut from the order that isn't even counted toward the delivery process. so even if the restaurant takes no extra profit from delivery(most smaller restaurants don't seem to), it will still end up about 25 to 35% more expensive for the cheaper items.

McDonald's charges premium prices on their food as well as a delivery fee.

I never use delivery for McDonald's.

Stick to ordering delivery from your local Thai, Turkish, Chinese, Italian etc. joints. Same prices, just the delivery fee.

When you work in a place that's far removed from any decently prized restaurant, those apps are a real blessing. Specially when you don't own a car and have limited lunch time

Ofcourse you are getting ripped off, not only does a $20 meal ends up being $40 after taxes, tips and delivery fees but sometimes early in the morning and late at night your food isnt delivered. Better to go pick it up yourself.

I kinda think delivery could/should be cheaper than eating in. You're not taking up a table in the restaurant, not needing table service, not adding to the washing up etc.

Really it would be better if there were more delivery kitchens, restaurants that don't have customers eating in, and can save money by using a cheaper location and targeting just the delivery model.

Btw a mandatory tip is not a tip, it's part of the price.

I don't eat restaurant food too often but if I do I go get the food myself. I'm not willing to pay the markup for the convenience of having something delivered.

Anything that you do to get out of being lazy is basically a rip-off. I only order from places that would be an actually inconvenience to get to. If I order at all.

There was this one delivery app in Toronto back a couple years ago and they were amazing, always had deep discounts and stackable dollars/percentages off. Often it was cheaper using them than it was to pick up the food yourself.

I think they were trying to do the startup thing where they take a beating to drive up market share and get VC money.

It all came to a head because they paid out the businesses they delivered for after a week or something, and one day the business owners were like, "we're taking a bath on these deliveries" so they killed their own business overnight and skipped off with everyone's money.

Found the story.

In China it's usually cheaper to order food. Just another thing capitalism gets wrong

man between singaporean food stands, chinese standards of service and delivery (with the costs built in at order time) sometimes I wonder who has it better

of course on the other hand i can walk outside and breathe the clean air and fairly empty beaches are just 2 hours away so I got that going for me
