A serious theory is that playing video games in handheld mode is more personal and intimate due to the proximity to the player. Sorta like reading a good book.
I agree with this. I always loved curling up on the couch with my Game Boy like a good book, and it's the same with my Switch. I typically find games more engrossing when I can play them portably.

Also it was payday so I got Thunder Force IV, Warlock of Firetop Mountain (I've read the gamebook and beaten the DS game, so I'm really excited for this), and Wasteland 2. These three games plus Dragon Quest XI are gonna keep me busy for a while.

I'm a huge shmup fan but I have somehow never played any Thunder Force game aside from the PSX version of V. IV is awesome. I already love this game. If someone had told me that shooting backwards is a staple mechanic in this game I would have played it years ago -- I love shmups that have this mechanic. There's something wonderfully cozy about Mega Drive shmups.

Games have always been more engrossing and overall enjoyable when played portably for me as well, yeah. I think the Switch has enabled people who never cared for handhelds to experience the pros portable gaming has, it's always funny to read the typical the Switch has gotten me back into gaming impressions and be like "yeah dude, this has been thing for decades".

Recently got Dragon Quest XI and finally beat it last night. It was a fantastic experience but damn, I only finished it because it was DQ, I'm starting to realize I simply don't have the energy nor time to fully enjoy long-ass games in front of a TV anymore, I really wish the Switch version had been done on time or that we could have the 3DS version too.

Anyway, I gotta admit I was one of those who thought Knight Terrors was a lame mobile game with nothing outside of the cool pixel art but after reading Epilexia's impressions I used some gold coins to get it and yeah, it's quite good! It's a pretty solid runners with simple mechanics that are used for plenty of fun challenges. I love its style and use of screen shake for better visual feedback too. Very, very fun.

I think a major difference is that the Switch is playing the exact same games as its stationary home console brethren (or at least close enough for most people). Previous handhelds felt like compromised experiences, whether it was simpler controls, lower resolutions, or truncated gameplay. That limited the appeal of those systems, as the intimacy of a handheld was negated by the "lesser" experience. By removing that distinction, I think the Switch is tapping into a previously-untapped zeitgeist where the depth of "big production" gameplay is amplified by the closeness of handheld play.

Or maybe I'm just talking out of my posterior. :-)

Hey folks I need eShop suggestions. I'm gonna get BOTW, MK8, Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey first, then start getting more games, physical and digital. I'm already eyeing Dead Cells, Sonic Mania, Enter the Gungeon, Minecraft, Rocket League. I'm also gonna try to get Marble It Up! when it releases on the 29th this month.

So please, suggest away.

Oh of course, I didn't mean to say the Switch doesn't bring anything new to the table, it definitely does. I've always enjoyed handheld gaming but being able to enjoy the same "big games" you play on your TV, on the go, is a really big jump for portable systems. I just meant that I often see people in awe at features as simple and commonplace for handhelds as being able to suspend your Switch at any moment with the tap of a button and find that amusing.

I'm still waiting on my physical copy to ship...I hope they don't fuck up the Psyvariar Delta launch.

Edit: Don't recommend Sky Force Reloaded. It's a slow, grindy euro-SHMUP. (Full blast is better/cheaper if you like Euroshmups)

It's mindnumbingly insane too. They still won't answer my request for a review copy or even provide an ETA on the digital version so I can inform you guys on it, and the Ufouria DLC is also TBD as a result. I'm gonna assume Psyvaviar will be in the same boat since they sent nothing about that either.

Sega Ages are less than $5 if you live in Mexico, by the way. Makes stuff like Sonic 1 a lot more palatable. Again, if you HAPPEN to live in Mexico.

Trying to decide between Ittle Dew 2 or Okami.

Sell me on one of these eShop fam!

Do you want to pick among lots of small dungeons with some challenge, in a topview Zelda fashion? Get Ittle Dew 2.

Do you want a long linear story with lots of text, in a beautiful surrounding, nice gimmicks, lots of story twists, but with lots of hand holding and no challenge at all? Get Okami HD.

So, I read in another thread that you just got a Switch, and there are just soooo much eShop stuff to suggest!

My general suggestion would be to browse the Metacritic all-time list and pick the games at MC 80+ in genres that interest you:
https://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/score/metascore/all/switch/filtered?sort=desc

The problem with that approach is that nowadays some really good games don't get the 7 required reviews to appear on that list. And some games are really good but with bad score, because some reviewers don't "get" (or actually play) the game.

IMO, a good mainstream single-player starter kit could (for example) be:
Steamworld Dig 2
Yoku's Island Express
Celeste
Hollow Knight
Into the Breach
Golf Story
Battle Chef Brigade
Stardew Valley
Okami HD
Some puzzle game, like Picross for example
Puyo Puyo Tetris
Sonic Mania
Undertale

And these free downloads:
Fortnite
Pinball FX3 (you buy the table packs)
Paladins (really good port IMO)

The device, because it can be carried around, also feels like a toy and accessory and there is a greater sense of connection to the device. I almost feel like I'm feeding it when I buy new games lol

I'm still really unclear on how all the account sharing interacts with Nintendo Online. I have one Switch with two user accounts tied to two different MyNintendo accounts and regions. Will the standard $20/year plan cover all my accounts on this one Switch?

I don't know for sure, but I think you need the family sub for that.

It's why the "horror games on handhelds don't work" argument never had any ground to stand on.

I remember sitting in the lounge, in the dark playing Resident Evil Revelations on my 3DS with my headphones on. Never felt something quite like it.

I was so in to it that i didn't notice my younger sister come in to the room and sneak up right next to me. Scared me something fierce!

The standard fee covers one user, not one system. If you want both users you need a family account.

Any opinions here on Old School Musical? I'm a big fan of rhythm games, and the limited number of reviews I have found suggest it's decent-ish with very good music.
Just wondering if there were any other more insightful opinions from anyone here.

Athena and Ikari Warriors not so attractive with both of them being in the SNK collection coming in November.

Still no Bubble Bobble :(

Yeah thats weird. I wonder if there is a music licensing issue or something weird. Wasn't the Nes version released on one of the Virtual consoles? So you would think it may be able to come out, but maybe the arcade version has something limiting it.

Maybe we'll get it in the NES app for Nintendo online, not as good as arcade but I wouldn't complain

Donkey Kong Jr., Strikers 1945 Plus and I'll look at Vs. Urban Champion (1v1 fighting).

Patiently waiting for KOF 2002

I'll be grabbing Bust-A-Move 1/Again, Strikers 1945 Plus, DKJr, Ninja Kid II and Image Fight. The old SNK games I'll get in the Collection but I'm glad Hamster's still doing them. Hopefully they also redo all of FTE's Data East games because those I'd buy!

My NeoGeo want list is shrinking rapidly. Just Twinkle Star Sprites, Baseball Stars 2, SSV Special, Metal Slug 5, KOF2002, Kabuki Klash, Panic Bomber, Ironclad, Rage of the Dragons and (pls) SVC Chaos left. I'd add Viewpoint and Matrimelee but Sega's probably a no.

I've always just preferred portable systems. I had a one x and a PS4 Pro and my switch just capitalized all my time. Games I didn't give a shit about like fortnite and paladins and rocket league were these great experiences that I would actually play because I could take the console with me. Lay in bed, chill on the patio with my wife. I love it. With my lack of time due to school, I got rid of my other consoles and just play my switch. There's just something great about not being tethered to a TV. Hell, I own cities on both PC and Xbox, but switch will get me to triple dip.

This. Portability is less about taking the console on the go and more about being able to enjoy playing ANYWHERE in your home. The fact that I can take it to any cozy place in my house to play is much better than being stuck to a couch.

Bro, eShop is packed with goods. Everything you listed is good to start. Just know you can catch me in Rocket League, Fortnite, MK8, Paladins,Capcom BeatEmUp and soon to be Warframe.

I think Im picking up DBZF this week too. Yo! Beware, this system makes you want to buy games for it!

Finished Yoku's Island Express last night, and, good Lord, is that final boss incredibly weak and anticlimactic... In fact, the whole ending is terribly underwhelming.
All in all, a nice little game, with a fresh concept and pleasing art style, but too limited, short and easy for its own good. Still recommended, I'd say, but not at full price.

Puzzle Bobble
Puzzle Bobble 2
The King of Fighters 2001
Zupapa!

Pleasure Goal
Savage Reign
Strikers 1945 Plus

Exactly. When people say they aren't interested in a handheld because they don't play games outside the house they seem to be missing the fact that most people play their handhelds in their homes 90% of the time. I know i do.

Being able to travel with the system is obviously a big draw, but for me and many others its about being untethered. I can play anywhere in my house. Any room, any chair. I can lie in bed in the dark and just cozy up. And yeah, it's nice to be able to commute with.

Another obvious bonus of feature of handhelds is that it frees up the TV. More than just making it available to others, I can have something on in the background. I know a lot of people like to watch sports while gaming.

A lot of people do like that big TV experience and that's where Switch offers the best of both worlds. It makes you want to buy games knowing you'll have so many options and opportunities to play them.

Although I was already addicted to collecting games when I got my DS and it got really bad with Vita because of ridiculously good PSN sales. Switch is just carrying the torch.

I have a confession, friends: I was underwhelmed by the entire Yoku experience.

Now anyone who knows me on these boards knows I'm obsessed with pinball. Yoku was one of my most-anticipated games because of the intersection between pinball and metroidvania.

Ultimately, the game fell way short of my expectations. I was looking for something else. The game is cute, clever and well made. highly polished. I cannot fault it for doing what it seems to have set out to do. But the game has zero challenge. If you were looking for a nice, breezy chill-out game then I can heartily recommend Yoku. But if you are a pinball fan looking for even a modicum of challenge you won't find it in Yoku.

IMO, there's a ton of missed opportunities when it comes to the level design. There also needs to be a bigger penalty for falling into brambles.

I wonder how much more the game could be improved just by adding a difficulty where you can die and have to go back to checkpoints.

Yoku is a much better game than Rollers of the Realm. The genres they mash are different but Yoku's execution is way better. In fact, I don't think Yoku is a bad game. I think it's quite good. But it's not the game I was hoping it would be.

    • Image Fight

Athena and Ikari Warriors are weird choices since they're both in SNK 40th, but maybe they're two different versions?

Vs. Urban Champion is a weird choice because that game is basically a meme now for how bad it is and how often Nintendo kept pushing it.

Outside of Puzzle Bobble and Strikers 1945 Plus that list of NeoGeo titles is awful.

O Baseball Stars 2, where art thou?...

No shit. That's one of the best Neo Geo games and one of the best Baseball games ever and Hamster is fucking around.

Guess we'll be waiting til sometime next year.

Also disappointed that KOF 2001 is on the list but not 2002.

I just played through the story mode this afternoon and...it's pretty much exactly how you described it. There's some really great music (which can be played separately from the story in an 'arcade' mode as you unlock them) and the parodies of classic games are clever and funny for the most part. It's pretty short - around 2 hours - but as I mentioned there's an arcade mode and an extra mode unlocks after you finish the story. I'm definitely glad I bought it now and didn't wait.

Into the Breach is amazing but my god is it brutal. It's a constant war of attrition against you.

I really enjoy it but i find it even more dispiriting than XCOM.

I've heard, it looks so fantastic I really don't mind about hair pulling difficulty, I bought VVVVVV again haha.

Has anybody checked out Slice, Dice & Rice?

Still looking for a Bushido Blade type game to really hit home

astro bears party was worth a buck. def a fun party (mini)game. we all loved snake so it hit the right notes for us
